clear the log jam known as the "Red River Raft", so that the Red River
would again be open for navigation. The
Holmesville Subdivision in Shreveport is named for his family.
Mr. Gunning's grandfather, Thomas Clay Johnson, owned a brickyard which
manufactured bricks for many of the
early downtown buildings. Among Mr. Gunning's treasured possessions was a
brick from one of these buildings that
was demolished to make way for a more modern structure.
Mr. Gunning was a devoted husband and family man. As a young man, he was
interested in community affairs,
holding memberships in the Belcher United Methodist Church, the Lions'
Club of Belcher, and was Scout Master of
Boy Scout Troop 94. For several years, he was Commissioner in Charge for
the voting precinct at Belcher. He was
interested in other people, and never failed to help when called upon.
The family wishes to thank Dr. S. Germaine Cassierre for his competent,
and compassionate care during Mr.
Gunning's illness. We are also grateful to his faithful caregivers; and
companions, Betty Wyatt, Ann McDonald,
Betty Johnson, Julie McCann, and Jo Williams. These ladies cared for him,
loved him, entertained him, and
generally helped him to have a better quality of life
He will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him.

God saw that he was getting tired
And a cure was not to be.

    And whispered, "Come with me."
With tear-filled eyes we watched him
    Suffer and fade away.
    Although we loved him deeply.
