JOSEPH DEDGE SMITH
Joseph Dedge Smith, was born in Appling County, April 23,
1837. His father was named Austin and his mother May. His
father was a large land and slave owner; his grandfather
was John G., also a large land owner; was a member of the
Home Guard of Confederate Veterans; is a Mason, K. of P.
member of the Knights of Honor and of the Methodist
Church.

When he came to Waycross, there were only about 250
people here. Mr. Smith owns considerable property here,
including residence lots on Tebeau Street; a large front
of business property ajoining the Herald Office, where he
contemplates the erection of a six story office building;
25 houses in different part of the city; residence
property in North Birmingham, Ala., and an interest in a
pump manufacturing plant there. He married Miss Jane,
daughter of Ephriam Knowles of Burke County. The children
living are Joseph Lee, physician at Victoria, Texas,
Edward Julian, livery business at Charge, Texas, Mrs.
Ella Bibb and Mrs. Mary Mallon, both of Waycross.
