Gassett, Carthan
1830 - 1862
Note: Carthan Gassett (1830-1863) is buried near
William and Jane Gassett in Sand Bethel Cemetery
(which was farm land that William and Jane sold to
the United Methodist Episcopal Church South for the
cemetery in 1858.) The name Carthan is rare and is
used for both males and females. Based on a careful
study of William's census record I believe that
Carthan was likely female and the widow of one of
William's two unknown sons and the mother of George
Gassett, born about 1860, and Beulah Gassett, born
about 1862, who were in Francis Marion Gassett's
household in 1870. In any case, George and Beulah
Gassett were too old to have been Marion's children
and were likely the orphans in question.

Butler Herald Vol. 12 #3 November 22, 1887(from the Taylor Tracer, Oct. 2003)
In Memoriam

Died Nov. 13th, 1887, Mr. John S. Hill, youngest son
of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Hill, aged 18 years. He was
just entering young manhood with his hopes and
promises luring him onward. He lived but a few
years but his life was a success. You only had to
know him to love him. He was possessed of those
traits of character which are most to be admired.

The writer knew him only a little while but long
enough to have his affections fixed. He was
generous to all, kind and obliging, faithful in all
duties imposed upon him; neither murmuring nor
complaining he acted promptly and cheerfully in all
the trials of life, never trying to shun any burden
no matter how heavy. As a pupil in school he was
always in his place promptly. Attentive and
studious, never disobeying by word or action any
rule of school. As a companion he was beloved by
all of his associates, even willing to suffer
himself for the welfare and pleasure of his
companions. As a son and brother he was ever ready
to oblige a father or cherish and comfort a mother,
sister of brother. Whether at home or abroad, in
the schoolroom or the playground, he was always on
the side of right. He died as he had lived and left
an aching void the world can never fill. But we don
not morn as those who have no comfort. We trust
from the smiles that played on his brow as his
spirit was departing, that angel bands were in
readiness to waft his spirit home where it will
dwell with its Maker in that world where there is no
parting and death never comes.

Father. mother, brothers and loved ones cease your
greiving and look forward to the time when you will
be united on the heavenly shore and join your voices
with those of your loved ones gone before, singing
songs of praise in that home where there is no

No. 6 Thursday, November 3, 1887

Miss Katie E. Hill, only daughter of Elbert and C.E.
Hill, of Schley county, died of thyphoid fever on
October 30th. Many relatives and friends were
present to witness her lamented death.

Katie was loved and esteemed for her kindness;
affectionate to her parents, kind and loving to her
brothers and charitable to everyonr she met. She
survived her elder sister one year and 18 days,
leaving her father, mother and three brothers.
Being a member of the Methodist Church, she led a
christian life, crowned with virtue and truth, while
her death has cast a cloud of sadness over the whole
community, we feel that he who gave has the right to
take away, and while we sympathize with the bereaved
family we feel sure that she has received a rich
inheritance beyond the skies.

Katie, we will ever miss thee,
           In our pilgrimage here below,
But we trust again to meet you
           On that fair eternal shore.
