Located at Sierra Avenue between A & C Streets in the city of Oakdale. 209-847-1127 HISTORY: One of Oakdale's first fraternal organizations, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) Oakdale Lodge #228, was founded in 1875. An entry in the I.O.O.F.'s record book, dated 27 November, 1880, indicates that the cemetery committee was authorized to purchase a suitable site for a Lodge cemetery. An entry follows in the records dated 25 December, 1880 that $159.38 was drawn from the Lodge treasury to pay for the ground which had been purchased for a cemetery. But something went wrong with the purchase contract as Hill & Potter, prominent landowners in Oakdale, refused to sell and accept payment for their land which had been surveyed for a cemetery. On display at the Oakdale Museum is a map dated 1881 which had been prepared for Hill & Potter, Land-developers. This map shows a plot of land designated for a cemetery. It is situated about two blocks west of the present I.O.O.F. Oaklawn Memorial Park. The purchase of land for a Lodge cemetery was put on temporary hold until on 2 April, 1881, when the records indicate that the cemetery committee purchased all of Block 4 and one-half of Block 5 on the north side of town for a cemetery. The purchase price was $225.00. The formal dedication of the new I.O.O.F. Oaklawn Memorial Park was held on 4 July, 1881. It has been reported that Frederick Schadlich, a member of the first committee died soon after being appointed. His death in the records of Oddfellows Cemetery is September 11, 1878. He was the first buried at Langworth cemetery, and then in 1881, he was moved to the new cemetery and was the first burial there. Prior to the dedication and opening of the Oaklawn Memorial Park, residents of Oakdale had buried their deceased at the Langworth Cemetery. The town of Langworth had been located approximately three miles west of Oakdale but when the post office was changed to Oakdale in October 1871, the town "faded into the sunset." Soon after the opening of the Oaklawn Memorial Park, most of those buried at the Langworth Cemetery were moved to Oakdale. A newspaper article in the Oakdale Leader, dated 24 May, 1951, mentions that the upcoming Memorial Day celebration will be held at the Oaklawn Memorial Park, which had been reactivated about two years earlier. It seems that before the reactivation, the Park had been closed, or inactive, for several years. The I.O.O.F had arranged for a perpetual care program, cleaned the area and landscaped it and then reactivated the cemetery. The I.O.O.F. Lodge #228 continues to own and operate the Oaklawn Memorial Park as one of Oakdale's two burial plots as it has for one hundred and nineteen years. Location column: For the Oddfellows-Oaklawn Memorial Park, the arrangement of graves is in a simple grid pattern. From west to east A to U. From north to south 1 to 204. The letters are called Tiers (Tr) and the numbers are called Rows. Row 1- Tr A. In early years there were large Family Plots. These are designated by FP and a number. In addition the cemetery has a mausoleum and niches.
