He was born on August 8, 1915 in Scoby, Montana, the son of Rev. Milo J. J. Smith and Mrs. Laucie Pittinger Smith. After his graduation from the University of California at Berkeley, he was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy and he was stationed at the Panama Canal Zone during WWII. Mr. Smith worked in the insurance industry and was an actuary/ statistician for Blue Cross/Blue Shield and the Fireman's Fund in Oakland and San Francisco. He was active in several civic and fraternal organizations, primarily in Oakland, Berkeley and Stockton, including SIRS (Sons in Retirement Service). He was a very active member of the Disciples of Christ Christian Church, where he served as Deacon and Church Treasurer. Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Donald Eugene Smith, and his wife Diane of Kansas City, MO; two daughters, Carol Ann Hart of Omaha, NE, and Susie Laverne Stanger, and her husband Terry Reed Stanger of Modesto; four grandchildren, Katie Michelle Hart of Omaha, NE, Adam Michael Hart of Evanston, IL, Terry Reed Stanger II and Trevor Eugene Stanger of Modesto; and one brother, Herbert L. Smith of Syracuse, NY. He is also survived by twelve nieces and nephews, their spouses and children. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Laverne Carter Smith of Stockton; his parents, Rev. Milo J. and Mrs. Laucie Pittinger Smith of Berkeley; and four sisters: Ruth March of Belmont, Mary Kimball of Menlo Park, Josephine Stoptaught of Lafayette and Kathryn Pyle of Morro Bay. Friends are invited to attend Funeral Services at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2005 at First Christian Church of Stockton at Weston Ranch, 1234 William Moss Blvd., in Stockton.
