The local bank now has aggregate deposits amounting to $650,813.67 as of May 1,1917. 05/17/17 Here's Patriotism for You: The little town of Palestine, seven and a half miles from Forrest City, enjoyes the distinciton of having one of the most patriotic citizen in St.Francis county in the person of Mr.C.M.Wilkinson. This genteleman's oldest son, Taylor, is a member of the army aviation corps near Dallas, his second son, Banks, is a member of an infantry company at Fayetteville, and his only daughter, Miss Aubrey, has joined the Red Cross nurses. 05/17/17 Dr.and Mrs.John S.Izard, and the two boys, Ralph and John Carder, arrived in the city Monday morning from Howell on a visit to Mr.and Mrs.Charles R.Izard. 05/17/17 Nathan Yoffie graduated from Marianna High School on Tuesday. 05/17/17 Commencement Programme of the Forrest City High School opens Sunday May 20 for baccalaureate services to be given by Rev.Dr.Blasidell, Rector of St.John's Episcopal Church of Helena. V.B.Izard is attending. 05/31/17 A Valuable War Relic: May 30,1917-From the Garden of Eden: Editor of Herald-Forrest City: Dear Sir, the Army pistol I sent you yesterday, I want sent to Brig.Gen.John Dye, I see he has appointed his staff and is making his arrangements to go to the reunion at Washington City. Thirty years ago when I came to the Garden of Eden, it was a wilderness and was inhabited by bear, deer, turkey and all wild animals, and had been uninhabited since 1865. Here is where Col.Dobbin's camped and fought those, it many hard battles from '61 to '65 and I am satisfied that the pistol was lost by some brave man of his regiment. As Gen.Dye has some of Dobbins' men on his staff, it is possible they can recognize it, and in case none of them cannot, he may bind some at the reunion at Washington City, as Dobbins' regiment generally goes to the reunion. But few got killed and not many have died. In case it is not recognized, return it to me and I will take it up to the Confederate home near Little Rock, as several of his command are inmates of the home there. I am anxious that the owner got it, if it was any of Pat Clabourne's soldiers or Gen.Govan's, I wouldn't be so particular about returning it, as they were connected with the Army of Tennessee, but Dobbins' command never left the canebrakes of Eastern Arkansas and they had a hard time fightin the Yankees by themselves. The 3rd Arkansas Infantry formed here was approved, 88 of 100 recruits passed the tests. 06/07/17 Dr.Bennie William McCrary recieved his degree in Dentistry from Vanderbilt School of Dentistry in Nashville June 7,1917. A dastardly crime was committed here Tuesday morning, Apr.2,1917, some time between midnight and day when William Hern, after having dug out a hole through the hearth beneath the floor, entered the room where his former wife, Mrs.Hattie Jolley was sleeping, with a long, black handled knife, stabbed the woman in the right side of her neck, xevereing the jugular vein and inflicting a wound from which his victim died, it is supposed, in a short time. Ernest Jolley, 10 year old son of the murdered woman, who was in bed beside his mother, when the negro Hern dealt the mortal blow with his knife, testified before the coroner's jury that he awoke just in time to see the murderer just as he emerged from the hole in the hearth and enter the room; that Hern ran quickly to the door, and unlocked it, then turned around in a hurried and ferocious manner, plunged the knife into his mother's neck, after which he disappeared through the open doorway which he had previously unlocked. The boy Ernest, said he was too badly scared to make an outcry, other than to ask Hern in a smothered and terrified voice, "what was he doing in the room?" Dr.J.O.Rush also testified to the fact that he was among the first to view the body of the Jolley woman, and the boy Ernest had called him about 6 a.m., the crime having been committed in a house belonging to him, Dr.Rush. Following a severe cold and a spell of lagrippe from which he suffered last fall, he had been in failing health for several months, but had only been confined to his home and bed about a month when the end came. The funeral services were solemnized on Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the family residence, and the remains were followed to their last resting place in the Forrest City Cemetery by a large concourse of friends, Rev.J.F.E.Bates officiating. Deceased was a native of Alabama, and was born at Madison in that state, Jan.9,1833. In early boyhood he removed to Marshall Co., Miss., making their home near the Marsahll institute. In 1860 he was married to to Miss Ophelia McCombs, of Red Banks, Miss., and their union was blessed with four children, viz:Dr.W.H.Alley, Jr., James L.Alley, Mrs.E.M.Cherry, and Mrs.A.J.Vaccaro, all of whom with their mother survive. Deceased served in the Confederate army as a member of Co.F-2nd Kentucky Cavalry, under Capt.Tom Weber, Col. Bassil Duke, and General John Morgan, and his valor and courage thoughout that memorable struggle will remain as a heritage of honor to those of his blood whom he has left behind. The deceased has long been a citizen of St.Francis county and Forrest City, having removed here with his family thirty four years ago from Byhalia, Miss. Dan T.Wylds was a native of St.Francis county, and was born Dec.4,1846, on the farm settled by his father, David Wylds in 1827. He was a large plant4er, the old homestead consisting of 1,813 acres of good land, and a successful businessman, for a number of years having been a member of the mercantile firm of Brandon, Baugh & Co. He received his education in the common schools of this couunty, and at the age of 17 enlisted in the Confederate Army, as a member of Co.F.-First Tran-Mississippi Cavalry. He was under General Sterling Price on his famous raid thru Missouri. being wounded at Jefferson City on Oct.7,1864. He was made a prisoner and taken to Richmond; exchanged Mar.5,1865, and walked from that city to his home on June 19,1865. Deceased was a member of the Odd Fellows, Knights of Honor, and politically was a straight party democrat. In the growth and development of St.Francis county and Forrest City, the deceased had been an important factor, ever ready to assist in movements for the advancement of the community interests and the bettermne of humanity. The South has lost one of her most loyal sons. and the entire community mourns with the relatives and friends in their bereavement. 06/28/17 SARGENT ARTHUR Unk 6 27 1917 Unknown Arthur Sargent is dead, and Bradford Richardson is held as principal, and Hezekiah Jeffries as accessory, on charge of murder, to the grand jury as the result of a quarrel between Sargent and Richardson, both are colored. The crime was committed in the public road about two and a half miles south of the city Thursday evening, June 27,1917. Interment was made in Madison cemetery Wednesday afternoon, Rev.J.E.F.Bates, of the Methodist church, presiding. 07/12/17 EAGLE CHARLES E. 3 2 1869 7 8 1917 LOUGHRIDGE CROSS COUNTY FARMER HELD ON MURDER CHARGE: Lucian Mulholland, charged with killing Charles Eagle Monday, July 8.1917, was brought here from Wynne Tuesday by Sheriff Reg.Martin and Deputy Sheriff Bob Hall, and lodged in the St.Francis river, near Wise's farm, further inquiry into this case reveals: There were no eye witnesses to the affair at the start though there was one, Pete Armstrong who came up just before the row was ended. One version of the affair is that Eagle, for who Mulholland was farming, complained that Mulholland was not doing sufficient work and a row started. Mulholland, who claims he acted in self defense, slashed Eagle across both arms above the elbows, and in the abdomen. Eagle lived several hours and made a statement to the Cross County Sheriff before his death, and said statement will be most important evidence when the case comes up for trial. Eagle was buried in the Loughridge cemetery, near Newcastle. He is survived by two children, a daughter, 20, and a son, 17 years of age. The body was embalmed by funeral director W.B.Ainsworth, with Stevens & Co., and funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Vanndale. Deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs.W.Smith, two grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Birth: Dec. 28, 1834Death: Aug. 26, 1917Capt. J. M. Levesque, the worthy and esteemed county clerk of Cross County, enlisted at the outbreak of the Civil War, in Company C of the Thirteenth Arkansas Infantry, the first regiment organized in that part of the State, Cross County, and was immediately elected orderly-sergeant of his company. The regiment was sent to Fort Pillow, and thence to Kentucky, and was also in the battle of Belmont, Mo., November 7,1861 evacuating at Columbus, Ky., in March 1862. At the battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862, Lieut. Joe Hall was wounded, and Mr. Levesque was chosen to fill his place as second lieutenant. Shortly after this the first lieutenant was wounded and discharged, and our subject was elected to his position, and at the reorganization of the regiment at Cornith, in April 1862, he was elected captain, and served through the Alabama and Kentucky campaign, also participating in the battles of Richmond, Ky., under Kirby Smith at Perryville, Ky., and Murfreesboro, Tenn. At the reorganization of the army, he was sent to the Trans-Mississippi Department, and there engaged in recruiting a company of cavalry, mostly from Cross County; was in a number of skirmishes, but not any important battles, his company going on the Missouri raid under Gen. Price. At the close of the war, he took up farming as an occupation. . . . . . . . . but in 1866 he was elected circuit and county clerk of Cross County, which office he held until the reconstruction of the county, when he was disfranchised for having held office at the beginning of the war, and in participating in the Rebellion. He then again engaged in farming In 1874 he was elected sheriff of Cross County and was re- elected in 1876 and 1878. In 1880 he was elected circuit and county clerk and was also re-elected in 1881, 1884, 1886 and 1888. Mr. Levesque was born in Fayette County, Tenn., in 1834 (December 28), and was the son of James and Elizabeth (Arnett) Levesque. . . . . In 1854 he was married to Miss Nannie Willis and in the fall of that year he removed to Arkansas, settling in Cross County, in what was then a part of Poinsett County. . . . . . . Funeral services were held at the Good Hope church, services conducted by Rev.Champion, and burial was had at the Hughes graveyard. Deceased was a member of the Methodist church, having professed faith in Christ at an early age. She is survived by her husband, her mother, Mrs.M.C.Porter; two brothers and one hafl brother, Messrs.Richard and Will Porter, and Stephan Evans; and by two sisters, Misses Nina and Mable Porter, and by a twenty month old baby, who have the sympathy of the entire community in their irreparable loss. 09/14/17 BUTLER SAM Unk 9 1917 Unknown Sam Butler, a negro, is dead as a result of a pistol shot wound in the forehead and a knife wound in the back, and Tom Butler and Cora Davis were held by a coroner's jury for investigation of the case by the Grand Jury. After the coroner's jury had rendered their verdict, Tom Butler and Cora Davis were released on habeus corpus proceedings before Judge Rolfe, bond being placed at $200.00 each. The defendants were represented by Attorney J.Walker Morrow. 09/14/17 BROWN ROLAND TEEL 10 3 1916 9 8 1917 BROWN Roland Teel Brown, son of Mr.and Mrs.Ruffin T.Brown, was born Oct.3,1916, and died Sep.8,1917. He was a flower plucked in the bud. Little Teel has gone into the presence of God in all his innocence, without the stain of sin upon his soul. He is free from temptations, free from the danger and snares of this life. The body of Teel was laid to rest in the Brown cemetery near Haynes Sunday, Sep.9, in the presence of sad relatives and friends. 10/26/17 SOUTH CELIA J. MRS PRICE 4 19 1860 10 20 1917 CITY Accidental discharge gun kills woman. Mrs.Celia South was accidentally shot to death Saturday afternoon in Ed Berry's store in Madison. Mrs.South had gone to the store to make some purchases and Will Finley, a negro, accidentally dropped a pistol to the floor, which discharged and the bullet entered Mrs.South's left breast and went clear through the body, coming out near the right shoulder. Funeral services were conducted at the Forrest City cemetery Sunday afternoon, Rev.John N.McFarlane officiating. and were atteneded by a large number of sorrowing friends and relatives. Deceased was 57 years of age, and had for thirty five years had been a faithful member of the Baptist church. She is survived by two sons, Clarence and Ed South and by a half brother, Samuel L.Hodges. Finley was arrested and brought to Forrest City immediately after the shooting, on on Tuesday was given a hearing befroe Squire W.E.Kirby on a charge of carrying a conealed weapons, found guilty, and sentenced to pay a $200.00 fine and costs, and serve 60 days. She was born in Vicksburg, Miss., daughter of Mr.Hamilton Miller Prince and his wife, Mrs.Permelia Jane Kent. The father was killed in the siege of Vicksburg in the Civil war, June 29,1863. 10/26/17 WINFIELD CLEVELAND Unk 10 24 1917 Unknown Two Killed at Hughes: Cleveland Winfield, colored, was killed at Hughes Wednesday night, and a negro, whose name is other than "Rabbit" is unknown to the officers is charged with having committed the crime. It was all over a pair of boots. Rabbit, having pawned a pair of lace boots belonging to Winfield a short time back for $1.50, and upon making an offer to redeem them, so the story goes, Winfield refused to give them up. Rabbit then left the building (Chas.Hulen's place), and a few minutes later as Winfield left the store he was shot through the heart with a 38 calibre pistol bullet. Rabbit has disappeared. Another man, named Buford, also colored, is wanted on a charge of killing a negro woman at the same place on the 12 th of this month. 11/04/17 JAMES CARROLL 1877 11 1 1917 HAYNES Doped Drink Caused Death of Carroll James: Meager particulars of a most disturbing tragedy at Haynes reached the city Wedneday morning. Carroll James, a man well and favorably known throughout this section, died from the effects of poison which he took without realizing the danger. It is alleged that he had been drinking and undertook to "taper-off" on Tichenor's antiseptic. Unable to procure a further supply of that decoction, he is said to have reported to bay rum, the base of which evidently was wood alcohol, and this poison caused his death Tuesday, Nov.1,1917. The funeral took place and interment was made near Haynes Wednesday. The sad occurrence is regretted by his friends. He worked for Mr.J.J.Hughes, Jr., was about 40 years of age, and a member in good standing with the Woodmen of the World, holding a $1,000.00 policy. All the resources of love and skill were exhausted to save the baby's live, but to no avail.
