"De" of 44th Regiment of Infty. Vols. from the State of Miss., which was first designated as Blythe's Miss. Bat; that I was honorably paroled from such service on or about a few days before the close of the War in Spring of 1865 and did not desert the same; that I am now, and for the past twelve months have been, a bona fide resident of this State; that I do not myself, nor does my wife, nor do we both together, own property, real or personal, or both, or money or choses in action in excess of the value of $400.00 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel), nor has either of us conveyed title to any property to enable me to draw a pension, and that neither I nor my wife is in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150.00 per year; that I am incapacitated to perform manual labor in any of the ordinary avocations of life and that such incapacity (or disability) is the result of not wounds, but being advanced age, my age now being 70 years past - and consequent debilitated physical condition, and that such disability is not the result of my own vicious habits still persisted in, so help me God. Bird and H.H. Mock citizens of Poteau, Arkansas, whom I certify to be creditable persons, well acquainted with applicant for pension John Williams and have known him for 3 & 1 years, respectively. That he is now and has been for the past twelve months a bona fide resident of Arkansas. That he is incapacitated for manual labor by reason of advanced age and debilitated physical condition and that such incapacity (or disability) is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in. That to the best of our knowledge, all property now owned by him and his wife, together, is not worth exceeding $400 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel). That neither he nor his wife is in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, or the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150 per year. Piles, J.P. ========================================================================= PROOF OF SERVICE (By Comrades if Possible) State of Arkansas} County of Scott} On this day personally came before the undersigned, a Justice of the Peace within and for the County of Scott and State of Arkansas, Elias Williams, a citizen of Belva, Arkansas whom I certify to be a creditable person and worthy of confidence, who being duly sworn, states that he is personally well acquainted with applicant John Williams and have known him from my earliest recollection to the present time, he being my brother, and my age being now 66 years. That he was a Confederate soldier. Belonging to Company "D" 44 Regiment Miss. Infty. Vols. same being first designated as Blythe's Bat. of Miss. Infty. Vols. That as such soldier he served from about June 1861 to the close of the War in spring of 1865. That he was honorably paroled from such service, and did not desert the same. That he is now and has been for the past twelve months a bona fide resident of Arkansas. That he is incapacitated for manual labor by reason of advanced age and consequent debilitated physical condition and that such incapacity (or disability) is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in. Campbell, a duly registered and practicing physician in Scott County, Arkansas, do hereby certify that I am personally well acquainted with John Williams of Poteau, Arkansas, who is an applicant for a pension under the Statutes of Arkansas. That at his request I have made an examination of his physical condition, and find: State description and character of wound or disability: He has Haemorrhoids and Rheumatism Physican condition and to what cause is his incapacity for manual labor attributable: His physical condition is not good owing to the above named diseases, his advanced age and debilitated physical condition. and that said disability is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in: He is a man of good habits. Piles, J.P. ========================================================================== APPLICATION FOR INCREASE OF PENSION State of Arkansas} County of Scott} I, John Williams do solemnly swear that I am now, and for the past twelve months have been, a bona fide resident of this State; that I am now drawing a pension as an ex-Confederate soldier, under an Act of the General Assembly of 1901, having made my original application from the county of Scott; that I am still in indigent circumstances; that I do not myself, nor does my wife, nor do we both together, own property, real or personal, or both, or money or choses in action in excess of the value of $400.00 (exclusive of household goods and wearing apparel), nor has either of us conveyed title to any property to enable me to draw a pension, and that neither I nor my wife is in receipt of any income, annuity, pension or wages for any services, the emoluments of an office, in excess of $150.00 per year; that I am incapacitated to perform manual labor in any of the ordinary avocations of life; that my disability has increased and I am less able to perform manual labor than when my original application was made, by reason of old age and increased disability. I am 75 years old and will be 76 next Sept. [Signed] John Williams [Date & certification cut off in copy] =========================================================================== State of Arkansas, County of Scott We, the undersigned, sitting as a Pension Board for Scott County, do hereby certify that we have examined the application of the within named John Williams for increase of pension under Act of the General Assembly of the State of Arkansas, approved March 9, 1907, and the proof in support of same, and find that said applicant is less able to perform manual labor than he was at the time a pension was granted him, and that he is entitled to have the same increased to 80 Dollars. Physical condition and to what cause is his incapacity for manual labor attributable: Chronic Haemorrhoids, Rheumatism in right shoulder and arm, Kidney trouble, Nervous debility and Poor Circulation. and that said disability is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in: He is a man of good habits. That at his request I have made an examination of his physical condition and find: State description and character of wound [blank] Physical condition and to what cause is his incapacity for manual labor attributable: Applicant has rheumatism and disease of kidneys and bladder and chronic nasal catarrh and that said disability is not the result of his own vicious habits still persisted in: The above mentioned diseases are not the result of vicious habits.
