William E Poe Sr, Aged 77 Died suddenly at 11:10 a.m. yesterday (12/21/29)
While hunting squirrels 18 miles southeast of Benton. He had made his home
at Benton for the past two years but for many years previous he had been a
resident of Little Rock

His death was said to have been due to heart disease. Alford Cobb of Benton
was with him at the time.

Mr. Poe is survived by his wife, four daughters, Mrs J W Walton of Benton,
Mrs Harry W Browning and Mrs W C Kramp of Little Rock and Mrs J T Cob of
Park Hill; three sons W E Joe Jr, and Arthur Poe of Little Rock and W O
("Sonny") Poe Rural Route No 1 North Little Rock; two sisters, Mrs Almina
Bennett of Benton and Mrs Della Wright of Chickasha, Okla, and two
brothers, H F Poe of England and Joe Poe of Little Rock. He is also
survived by his Aunt, Mrs Shreptle McCool of Benton who is 100 years old.
Mr Poe was born in Grant County July 21, 1852 and came to Little Rock in
1888. For many years he conducted a general merchantile business at Sixth
and Center Streets. He was an honorary member Sheridan lodge. Mason. The
body will be removed by Owens & Co to the home of Mrs. Kramp 1925 Wolfe
Street at 1 this afternoon. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Sumner, Matilda E     Arkansas Gazette     Jan 1, 1930

Magnolia, Dec 31. -  Columbia county's oldest citizen, Mrs Matilda Ellen
Sumner, aged 99, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs E E Cupp, near
Emerson, Sunday night. Funeral Services were held yesterday in Smyrna
church, one of the oldest churches in the county, of which she was a member

Mrs Sumner's husband died 67 years ago, leaving her with 10 children, five
of whom are living. The eldest is Mrs Sarah Elizabeth Turner of Gladwater,
Tex, who is 83, Other children are, B F Sumner, 77, Mrs E E Cupp, Miss Ann
Sumner, all of Emerson, Mrs R A Warren of Walkerville, this county, who is
67 and the youngest of the five children.

Mrs Sumner was born in Georgia. She was married in Alabama before she was
16. The Couple moved to Arkansas in 1856 and settled in the county, where
they spent the remainder of their lives. She now has 102 living decendants
to the fifth generation. During the late World War, Mrs Sumner spent her
time knitting wool socks for soldiers, finishing 13 pairs which were sent
to the soldiers on the front.

Arkadelphia, Dec 31. -  John Thomas Lee, 82 who has lived here since 1850
and who was one of the best known business men of the early days of the
city, died at his home this afternoon. Born in Chambers County, Alabama,
November 9,1847, Mr Lee came with his parents to Arkansas in 1850, and was
married to Mrs Eudora Lee October 16, 1879. He is survived by two children,
Mrs. E W Thomas and Will H Lee of the Thomas Drug Co. of this city, also by
two sisters, Mrs B N Carter and Miss Dona Lee, both of the Hearn community
near here, and by one brother Joe J Lee of Hermleigh, Tx

 Mr. Lee clerked and was accountant for M M Cohn who conducted a mercantile
business here before going to Little Rock. Later he was in business with
Scott Hearin of Gurdon.

Funeral services will be at Rose Hill Cemetery at 3 o'clock tomorrow
afternoon, conducted by Rev R R L Bearden; ag1/1/30

McCann, John B     Arkansas Gazette     Jan 1, 1930

Fort Smith. Veteran, who saw Jackson killed. John B McCann of Spiro, Okla
aged 87, confederate veteran, died in a hospital here today

Mr. McCann served under General Stonewall Jackson in the Civil War and was
present when Jackson was killed accidentally. He was the great grandson of
William McCann, American officer who was killed at the Battle of Germantown
in the Revolution.

 A native of Wilmington, NC, Mr. McCann was engaged in cotton exporting
until 1900, when he retired and moved to Oklahoma City. About 20 years ago
he moved to Spiro where he has lived since. He was the father of Mrs.
Charles B Holt of Fort Smith

In addition to his daughter, Mr. McCann is survived by two sons, John and
Win McCann, both of Spiro, Okla.

Benton, Dec 31 - J J Crow Sr. aged 73, father of County Judge J J Crow,
former sheriff, died last night at his home, 14 miles west of Benton. He
operated the Crow filling station on the Hot Springs-Little Rock Highway.

Mr Crow is survived by two other sons, Ben of Little Rock and Mildred of
Owensville, four daughters, Mrs. Frank Ault, Winter Park, Fla; Mrs. Tom
Rowland, Mrs John Brown of Bryant and Mrs Walter B Higginbotham of
Thornburg; One Sister, Mrs W A Boshears of Little Rock.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 tomorrow morning at Parom Church with
Burial at the Fowler Cemetery.

Conway Dec 31 - James H Bailey aged 78, Former Faulkner County Clerk died
at his home here late this afternoon, following a stroke of paralysis
suffered last week. Nr. Bailey was a native of Georgia, but came to
Greenbrier 45 years ago, coming to Conway in 1902. He engaged in the
grocery business until he was elected county clerk in 1908. He served two
terms. For the past several years he has been serving as an active justice
of the peace.

Mr. Bailey is survived by his wife, by two daughters, Mrs. W F Whiddon of
Fayetteville and Mrs. Bess Cox of Conway; two sons, I G Bailey of Conway
and Fred E Bailey of Dallas, Tex; Four sisters, Mrs. Mattie Fuqua of Los
Angeles, Cal, Mrs. Sallie Oliver of Conway, Mrs. Mamye Smallwood and Mrs.
Lee Ward of Greenbrier; three brothers, Robert Bailey of West Texas, and R
C Bailey of Louisiana.

Funeral services will be held at the family home here at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Conway, Jan 2 - Edwin Durham, aged 24 died at the Faulkner county hospital
at 10:30 tonight of Meningitis. He was the son of Charles E Durham, well
known Conway real estate and insurance dealer and banker and Mrs. Durham.

He was educated in the Conway public schools and in Hendrix College. Durham
was married about five years ago to Miss Neva Crum of Helena, graduate of
Arkansas State Teachers College here and for the past few years they have
been living in Helena where he was engaged in the machinery business.

Durham had been suffering from the disease for several weeks and was
brought to the hospital here from Helena a week ago. His condition steadily
grew worse.  As a last resort a blood transfusion was undergone by his
yunger brother Robert.

Besides his parents and his wife, Durham is survived by one daughter,
Patricia; two brothers, Frank Durham and Robert Durham of Tulsa and one
sister, Mrs. D A Beard of Little Rock; ag1/3/30

Funeral services will be held at the Durham home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30
by Dr. J W Workman, pastor of the First Methodist church, and burial will
be at Oak Grove cemetery. Dr. Workman will be assisted by Dr. E F J
Garrott, pastor of the First Baptist church.

Piggott, Jan 3 - Joe Watson, aged 83, retired farmer, died recently at his
home south of Piggott, after a short illness. He was born in Lauderdale
county, Tennessee, and moved to this county with his parents when 10 years
old, and his lived within 100 yards of the same location since. He ran away
from home during the Civil war, and joined the Confederate army and served
through four years without his family knowing of his whereabouts. He is

Helena, Jan 3 - John D Crow, aged 54 died at the Baptist hospital in
Memphis last night following an operation for tumor of the brain, from
which Mr. Crow had been suffering for three weeks. Mr. Crow had been a
member of the Phillips County Board of Education since its establishment in
1922 and was chairman of this body for the past five years. He also was
president of the Bank of Elaine and died on the same day that institution
was taken over by a liquidating agent. Funeral services will be held from
the Elaine Baptist church Sunday afternoon. He is survived by his wife and
five cildren, all of Elaine.

John Albert Deming Sr, aged 50 322 East C Avenue, Park Hill, auditor for
the Gus Blass Company, died at a hospital here at 10 a.m. yesterday
following a short illness. Mr. Deming became ill Christmas eve, and later
developed pneumonia and appendicitis. He had been in the employ of the
Blass company 25 years, and was auditor for 10 years

He is survived by his wife; three sons, John Albert Jr., Max H and Dan A
Deming, and a daughter, Wanda Jean Deming, all of Little Rock: his mother,

Norman Smith, aged 46 well known business man of Searcy, at a hospital in
New Orleans, where he underwent an operation yesterday.

Mr. Smith was owner of the Searcy Transfer Company, manager of the Magnolia
Wholesale Oil Agency here and with his sisters owned the Hotel Mayfair, in
addition to considerable property holdings. He was a member of the City
Council.

business here. He was a graduate of the local high school and the Chicago

Buren; a sister, Mrs. C F Maddy of Little Rock; two brothers, Orian T
Goldsmith of Little Rock and Nat C Goldsmith of Ferndale, Mich, and an
uncle, Tom Clark of Denison, Tex. The body will be brought here for burial
