From the junction of Highways 7 and 27 in Dover, go north on Highway 7 for 5.5
miles to junction of Highway 164. Turn left on Highway 164 and go .7 mile. Turn
right, cemetery is at this junction. Copied by James and Alta Ballard. Story by

Booger Hollow received it’s name from the hollow just west of the cemetery.
Highway 164 runs through this hollow on it’s way to Bull Frog Valley. This
hollow is so narrow that the sun only strikes the ground for about an hour at
high noon unless it is the middle of the summer.
Years ago, there was a "haunt" tale concerning a headless horseman who traveled
this road on moonlit nights. He was supposedly murdered by cutting off his head.
The head was thrown into an old dug well on the west end of the hollow and the
body was buried at the Booger Hollow Cemetery. If you were fast enough to outrun
this headless horseman through the hollow, then you were safe, as he couldn’t go
any farther west than the well where his head was located, or any further east
than the cemetery, where his body was buried.
When you travel this stretch of road by horseback on a moonlit night, the echo
of your horse’s hooves and the moving shadows from the overhanging trees make
you a believer in this tale.
Even in the early days of automobile travel, when the old tube type radio in
your vehicle began to fade out as you passed through the hollow, someone was
likely to remark, "Well, the headless horseman is riding out tonight."
This tale has provided many opportunities for some fun loving youngsters to pull
pranks on people passing through.
A piano wire tied tightly between two trees makes a terrible noise when a pine
resin board is drawn across it. I believe that "old" Doctor Brown lost a team
and buggy here one night from such a sound. They tell that he hunted up the
responsible parties and made them chase down his horses and buggy and bring them
back to him.
Emmett and George Ray Brown claim to have had to re-hang their Dad’s front door
after they heard about the same noise while they were walking through the
hollow.
On another occasion, Ira Rentfro finally got his horse under control enough to
tie it to a tree while he walked back up the hollow and retreived a white lace
table cloth that was hanging from a tree. He said that it was a good table cloth
and his family used it on their dinner table for several years.
The old timers used to tease Tom Howard for identifying himself to a hoot owl on
one of his trips through the hollow.
Most of the people from this area have a story about some of their family
getting "spooked" while traveling through this short stretch of road.
