To my Readers: The Archive material that I reproduced the Mars
Hill Cemetery Census was printed in 1988. I know there have been
more additions since this print. If I got off a line or missed
something please let me know so I can adjust the material.
This was an effort of love for the effort of presenting this as a
lasting archive in our Lafayette County Press and the wonderful times
I remember at the Mars Hill Baptist Church. Easter wasn't Easter
without the Egg hunt at the Church and the wonderful Baptist songs
in the chapel and Mrs. Polly Knott's smiling face with a fresh
starched apron and a next door visit to Uncle Pete and Aunt Willie Mae.
Uncle Pete and Aunt Willie Mae Oglesby's home was where the new Mars Hill
Fire station sits and Mrs. Knott (Willie Mae Knott Oglesby's mothers
home was between the Mars Hill Church and her daughters home.
The past couple of months I have truly been blessed with genealogy
searchers from Louisiana, California, and this week another researchers
is coming in from Alabama. I have trekked through five old cemeteries
and even though I have been there many times, I always find something
interesting that perhaps will help another researcher from another
state. Please share your Lafayette County memories and ancestor histories.
You may think you are starting too late, but you will be amazed what
you can find.
Our Lafayette county Historical Society meets the third Sunday at 2:30p.m.
at the annex across from the jail.
In next weeks paper I will try to catch up on new queries.
I just didn't realize how long it would take with Mars Hill.

P.S. You can read my web site at Arkansas US Genealogy
(Lafayette County) under Aunt Ludie. Past articles and the census
are on-line.

One of the early railroads in Lafayette County was very near the Mars Hill
Community. The property was orginally a logging road, built by William
Buchanan, one of the most prominent lumber men of the south. He had a
lumber mill at Stamps and finally extending into Louisiana so the railway
had a great importance of the growth of this community. With the vast
amount to timber in this area the loggers were able to use the logging roads
and load their logs onto the railroad that extended south to Sibley, Lousiana.
