JAMES ALCORN

      Mr. James Alcorn, 71 of Newport, died Sunday, March 31, 2002 in 
Jonesboro. 
      He was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, a retired 
farmer, and an employee of C&C Distribution.
      Mr. Alcorn is survived by his wife, Patricia Alcorn, of Newport; 
four sons, Kris Alcorn and Clarence Alcorn of Newport, Alvin Alcorn of 
Diaz and Elder Dewayne Alcorn of Turrell; three daughters, Dorothy 
Calamese of Diaz, Shirley Alcorn of Little Rock and Evadale Alcorn of 
Newport; one brother, Clemmie Alcorn of Diaz and one sister, Irene 
Pennington of Newport; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and 
two great-great grandchildren.
      Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church 
with Rev. Marvin J. Alcorn officiating. Interment is in Shiloh Cemetery 
in Diaz.
      Pallbearers will be Clemmie Alcorn, Jr., Ray Alcorn, Lonnie Joe 
Smith, Jerry Alcorn, Leonard Peel, and Sherman Dean.

FLORENE COLSTON ASHBURN

      Mrs. Florene Colston Ashburn, 78 of McCrory, died Saturday, March 
30, 2002 in Newport.
      Mrs. Ashburn was a member of the Good Hope Baptist Church of 
McCrory.
      She was born Jan. 13, 1924 at Tupelo, Miss., the daughter of the 
late William Bryant and Althia Wiley Colston. She retired from the 
Woodruff County Nursing Home 16 years ago and loved her family, church, 
and doing for others.
      She is survived by one son, Roger Dale Ashburn of Wynne; two 
daughters, Sherry Wood and Sandra Matthews of McCrory; one sister, 
Bunice Bice of Kansas City, Kan.; three brothers, William Colston and 
Elvis Colston, both of Hammond, Ind.; and Johnny Colston of Utica, 
Mich.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Thompson-Wilson 
Funeral Home Chapel in McCrory with Rev. W. G. Davis and Rev. Lonnie 
Tidwell officiating. Interment in Woodman Cemetery in McCrory.
      Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Ashburn, Gary Ashburn, Michael 
Matthews, Keith Wood, Doyle Little, and Danny Little.

      Mrs. Irene J. King, 89 of Newport, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 
in Newport. She was born Feb. 17, 1913 in Hickory Grove, the daughter of 
George Marshall and Mary (Goodwin) Nelson Johnson.
      Mrs. King retired in 1995 as a sales representative for the 
Newport Daily Independent and was a member of the Campbell Station 
Baptist Church. 
      Mrs. King was a member of the Newport Business and Professional 
Women, had been a Justice of the Peace since 1975 and had served for 
many years as a member of the Campbell Station City Council. She was 
also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Democratic Women 
of Newport. 
      Mrs. King enjoyed working and going to church.
      She was preceded in death by three husbands, Robert E. Cullins, 
Butch J. Benish and Otis Noah King; one stepdaughter, Wanda Cruz; and 
several brothers and sisters.
      Mrs. King is survived by one son, Buddy Cullins of Plumerville; 
one daughter, Mary Henson of Newport; three stepdaughters, Barbara Hawk 
of Texarkana, Texas, Elaine Clark of Texarkana, Texas and Earnestine 
Makinson of Rogers; five grandchildren, Kim (Henson) Watkins, Doug 
Henson Jr., Sarah (Cullins) DeArman, Luke Cullins and Hannah Cullins and 
eight great-grandchildren, Derek Hatler Jr., Alexandria Watkins, Kevin 
L. Watkins, Kory D. Watkins, Jaide Henson, Amberly Henson, Krystle 
Henson and Ty DeArman. 
      Graveside service was 10 a.m. Tuesday at Walnut Grove Cemetery in 
Newport with Bro. Dale Bonner officiating. Visitation was Monday, 6 to 8 
p.m.
      Arrangements were by Jackson's Newport Funeral Home.


DOROTHY MUIRHEAD MACK

      Mrs. Dorothy Mack, 84 of Atlanta, Ga., died Wednesday, March 27, 
2002.
      Mrs. Mack graduated from Lindenwood College and attended the 
University of Illinois.
      Mrs. Mack was a long time resident of Jackson County and was 
married to the late Leonidas Mack.
      Survivors include two daughters, Alice Mack Frey of Avalon, N.J., 
and Susan Mack Black of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren, Charles Lee 
Frey, Jonathan Mack Frey, Allison Bateman Black, David McKinley Black, 
and Samuel Lawson Black.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church 
in Newport.
      Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the 
Jackson County Historical Society.

FLOYD STEWART

      Floyd Wayne Stewart, Jr., 32 of Oklahoma City, Okla. died Monday, 
April 1 at his home.

VELMA J. WHITE

      Ms. Velma J. White, 52 of Takoma Park, Md., died Tuesday, March 
26, 2002.
      Ms. White was preceded in death by her parents Willie and Gurtha 
Landrum.
      Survivors include daughters Felisa White and Carmen White; 
grandson Armani Coleman; siblings Charles Landrum, Charlene Landrum, 
Doris Landrum, and Jerry Landrum.
      Funeral service was 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greater Morning Star 
Baptist Church in Newport with Rev. Rickey Everett officiating.

LISA RENEE (NEAL) MARTIN

      Mrs. Lisa Renee Martin, 30 of Salem, died Thursday, March 28, 2002 
in Salem.
      Lisa was united in marriage to Tony Paul Martin on December 8, 
1989 in Salem, and to this union two daughters were born. She spent her 
working years as a wife, mother, and a secretary for the Salem Cable 
Company. Lisa was a member of the Salem Assembly of God Church.
      Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband, Tony Martin of Salem; two 
daughters, Mackenzie Martin and Wendi Martin, both of Salem; parents, 
Carl and Glenda Neal of Swifton; brother, Dennis Neal and wife Jennifer 
of Swifton, and many other relatives and friends.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2002 at the Salem 
Assmebly of God Church in Salem with Bro. Ken Caldwell, Bro. John 
Hodges, and Missy Barker officiating. Interment was in Salem Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Doug Buss, Robby Martin, Harry Brickey, Jim 
Mefford, Roger Bradley, and John Moore.

SAM POWELL

      Mr. Sam Powell, 44 of Bay Village, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at 
St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
      He was born Feb. 28, 1958 in Wynne, the son of Lester Powell and 
Frances (James) Powell. He was a mechanic and a lifetime resident of the 
Bay Village Community. He was preceded in death by his father, Lester 
Powell.
      Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Judy Powell of Bay Village; 
mother, Frances Powell of Bay Village; three sisters, Mary Fuller of 
Earle, Ruby Freaky of Mississippi, and Roberta Lynn Bratcher of 
Jonesboro; two sons, Lester William Powell and Kenneth May, both of Bay 
Village; three daughters, Leslie Dianne Powell of Bay Village, Earline 
Dearneal of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Julie May of Bowling Green, Ky., 
and 13 grandchildren.
      Visitation will be at Jackson's Harrisburg Funeral Home Friday 
from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
      Graveside service is 2 p.m. Friday at the Bay Village Cemetery 
with Mr. Bob McDoniel officiating. Interment in Bay Village Cemetery.

      Mr. Floyd Wayne Stewart, 32 of Yukon, Okla., died Monday, April 1, 
2002 at his home.
      He was a manager for Sprint telephone and of Baptist belief.
      Mr. Stewart is survived by his parents, Floyd Wayne Stewart, Sr. 
and Reba Faye Carter of Yukon, Okla.; one brother, Paul Stewart and his 
wife Amy of Tulsa, Okla.; grandmothers, Bessie Carter of Bradford, and

      Mr. Jesse James Blevins, 16 of Bradford, died Thursday, April 4, 
2002.
      He was a member of the Bradford Church of Christ and Bradford 
basketball and baseball teams.
      Mr. Blevins is survived by his parents, Joe and Debra Sackett 
Blevins of Bradford; one sister, Desarae Blevins of Bradford; 
grandparents, Jim and Jean Sackett of Bald Knob and Margaret Blevins of 
Bradford; great-grandmother, Pearl Blevins of Newport, and several 
aunts, uncles, and cousins.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Saturday at Bradford High School 
Auditorium with Danny Blevins officiating. Interment was in Coffeyville 
Cemetery.

THELMA V. GREER SKAGGS BULLARD

      Mrs. Thelma V. Greer Skaggs Bullard, 82 of Southside, died Monday, 
April 8, 2002 in Little Rock.
      She is preceded in death by her husband, James T. Skaggs; her 
parents, Benjamin and Oshie Bethel Greer; two sisters, Effie Rice and 
Jewel Young; one brother, Benjamin "Pete" Greer.
      Mrs. Bullard is survived by her husband, Clyde Bullard of 
Southside; one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Mary Skaggs of Newport; 
one sister, Lillian Greer Abernathy of Newport; two grandchildren, Scott 
Skaggs and Lisa Skaggs Scudder, both of Newport; four great-
grandchildren, Brooke Scudder, Chelsea Scudder, Chase Scudder, and 
Mallory Skaggs, all of Newport and several nieces and nephews.
      Mrs. Skaggs Bullard was retired from Victor Metal after 27 years 
of service and has since been a homemaker. She was a member of Southside 
Church.
      Funeral service is 10 a.m. Thursday at Dillinger Funeral Home 
Chapel with Teddy Rhea officiating. Interment is in Walnut Grove 
Cemetery.
      Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Lane, Kyle Lane, and Preston Lane.

HARRY EUGENE ISBELL

      Mr. Harry Eugene Isbell, 101 of McCrory, died Saturday, April 6, 
2002 in McCrory. He was born September 28, 1900, the son of William and 
Emma (Avery) Isbell.
      Mr. Isbell was a retired self-employed farmer, a member of the 
Free Will Baptist Church and a World War II Army Veteran.
      He is survived by two nieces, Emmer (Isbell) Meredith of McCrory 
and Mattie (Isbell) Tubbs of McCrory, several great nephews and nieces.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Monday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel. Interment was at Ballews Chapel Cemetery.

OPAL ROSENE (REYNOLDS) JOHNSON

      Mrs. Opal Rosene (Reynolds) Johnson, 87 of Oil Trough, died 
Thursday, April 4, 2002 at Batesville. She was born on September 10, 
1914, the daughter of Charles and Ruthie (Reagan) Reynolds.
      Mrs. Johnson had been employed by the Oil Trough School Cafeteria 
as a cook for several years and was a member of the Oil Trough Methodist 
Church. She was a member of the Senior Citizens of Oil Trough and 
enjoyed sewing, gardening, and yard work.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Belvie Lintle Johnson in 
1959; four brothers, G. W. Reynolds, Clyde Reynolds, Floyd Reynolds, and 
Collie Reynolds; two sisters, Ethel Reynolds and Edith Reynolds; and one 
daughter-in-law, Beverly Johnson.
      Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons, Charles Wayne Johnson of 
Newport and James Conway Johnson of Newark; three daughters, Vada Mize 
of Little Rock, Louise Jones of Cabot and Clara McIntosh of Oil Trough; 
three brothers, Estes Reynolds of Pfieffer, Glenn Reynolds of Batesville 
and Jaycee Reynolds of Oil Trough; one sister, Ruby Palmer of Pfeiffer, 
14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-
grandchild.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Monday at Oil Trough Methodist Church 
with Rev. Bob Howerton officiating. Interment was in Roselawn Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Dwayne Johnson, Darrell Johnson, David Johnson, 
Doug Mize, Lee Manuel, Jamie Johnson and Mike McIntosh.

VERCY MAE JONES

      Mrs. Vercy Mae Jones, 74 of McCrory, died Sunday, April 7, 2002 in 
Searcy.
      She was born July 11, 1927 in Melbourne, the daughter of the late 
Elmer and Mary Barkster Brooks.
      She graduated from Beedeville High School in Jackson County. She 
was married to Mr. Leslie E. Davis [sic], who preceded her in death. She 
was a Baptist, a homemaker, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-
grandmother, neighbor, and friend. She liked to make ceramics, grow 
flowers, and attend the McCrory Senior Citizens Center as long as her 
health permitted.
      Mrs. Jones is survived by four sons, Gerald L. Jones of Indianola, 
Miss., Ronald Gary Jones of New Madrid, Mo., John Phillips Jones of New 
Madrid, Mo., and Joseph Patrick Jones of Leesville, La.; one sister, 
Othera Leevern Crooms of Las Vegas, Nev.
      Funeral service was 3 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home 
in McCrory with Rev. Ray Dean Davis, pastor of the Union Avenue Baptist 
Church in Wynne officiating. Interment was in Castor Cemetery in 
Leesville, La. Wednesday with a memorial service there at 3 p.m.

HOWELL WAYNE SLOAN

      Mr. Howell Wayne Sloan, 62 of Harrisburg, died Sunday night, April 
7, 2002 at the Regional Medical Center of NEA in Jonesboro.
      He was born April 5, 1940 near Harrisburg, the son of C. E. Sloan 
and Margaret (Henderson) Sloan.
      He was a lifetime resident of Harrisburg and a retired truck 
driver, having retired March 1, 2002 from Fathom Trucking in Trumann, a 
member of the Masonic Lodge No. 693 F. & A.M., where he was a 32nd 
Degree Scotish Rite and a Shriner. He was of the Pentecostal belief.
      He was preceded in death by his father, C. E. Sloan.
      Mr. Sloan is survived by his wife, Marie (Waters) Sloan of the 
home; mother, Margaret (Henderson) Sloan of Harrisburg; one sister, 
Earnestine Wilkins of Earle; one brother, Charles Sloan of Pevely, Mo.; 
one son, David Wayne Sloan and wife Amber of Harrisburg, and one 
grandson, Seth Cooper Sloan of Harrisburg.
      Funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson's Harrisburg 
Funeral Home Chapel. Interment is in Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery.

RUBY MAY WHITE SMITH

      Mrs. Ruby May White Smith, 87, of Fisher died Monday, April 8, 
2002 at a Jonesboro hospital.
      She was born Sept. 26, 1914 in Charleston, Mo. the daughter of 
Willie Butler and Jenny (Wiggins) Butler. She was a homemaker and a 
member of the Fisher Church of God of Prophecy. In addition to her 
parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Fred White and 
Luther Smith; one son, Jimmy White and one daughter, Evelyn Smith.
      She is survived by five daughters; Katie Davis of Fisher, Perlene 
Jameson of McCrory, Wanda Smith of Doniphan, Mo., Katherine Kinard of 
Fisher and Mary Baumgarner of Grand Haven, Mich.; one son, Fred White of 
Fisher, 24 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-
grandchildren.
      Funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Fisher Church of God of 
Prophecy with Rev. Don Yancey officiating. Interment is in Fisher 
Cemetery.
      Pallbearers are Randell Davis, Ray Davis, Jammy Vest, Joe Smith, 
Darrell White, and Ray Hall.

MAMIE M. TREECE

      Mrs. Mamie M. Treece, 81 of Union Hill, died Thursday, April 4, 
2002 in Newport.
      She was a homemaker and member of the Church of Christ. She was 
preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Nellie Foster and her 
husband, Amos Treece.
      Mrs. Treece is survived by daughters, Louise Knight of Union Hill, 
Mildred "Millie" Frierson of Little Rock; stepson, James A. Treece of 
Bradford; one brother, Tommy Foster of Newport; one sister, Mable 
Wheeler of Bradford; six grandchildren, and numerous great-
grandchildren.
      Graveside service was 10 a.m. Saturday at Coffeyville Cemetery.

NINA MARIE WILLIAMS

      Mrs. Nina Marie Williams, 86 of Tuckerman, died Saturday, April 6, 
2002 in Newport. She was born on March 10, 1916 at Marked Tree, the 
daughter of John and Ellie Peterson.
      She was a homemaker and a member of the Tuckerman First Baptist 
Church. Mrs. Williams enjoyed sewing and quilting.
      Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by two sons, Harold Lee 
Williams and Robert Lee Williams; one daughter, Katheryn Sexton; two 
brothers, Harvel Finley and Elbert Harmon; and three grandchildren.
      Mrs. Williams is survived by four sons, Chester Williams, Jr. of 
High Ridge, Mo., Hershel Williams of Newport, David Williams of Newport, 
and Ronnie Williams of Wichita, Kan.; four daughters, Dorothy Rubottom 
of Wichita, Kan., Francine Jones of Tuckerman, Anita Cantrell of 
Tuckerman, Gail Holland of Tuckerman; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-
grandchildren, and one special granddaughter whom she raised, Kathy 
Jones of Tuckerman.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Tuesday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Ed Morris officiating. Interment was in 
Gracelawn Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Brandon Holland, Jerry Jones, Jamie Williams,

A. J. "MIM" FORESTIERE

      Mrs. A. J. "Mim" Forestiere, 81 of Harrisburg, died Wednesday, 
April 10, 2002 at the Rose Skill Care Nursing Center in Jonesboro.
      She was born Oct. 30, 1920, in Johnson City, Tenn., the daughter 
of Andrew J. Wild and Gladys (DeSilva) Wild. She was a graduate of the 
Sophie Newcomb (Tulane) University at New Orleans, La. She married Dr. 
A. J. Forestiere on Feb. 5, 1944 and had lived in Harrisburg since 1949. 
She was a homemaker and very active in community service. She was a 
former member of the Harrisburg Garden Club and the Progressive Cemetery 
club. She had also been very involved with the Audubon Society. She was 
a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Jonesboro.
      Mrs. Forestiere is survived by her husband, Dr. A. J. Forestiere 
of Harrisburg; two sisters, Rosemary Young of River Ridge, La., and 
Dorothy Sailer of Austin, Texas; one brother, William Wild of Biloxi, 
Miss.; two sons, Dr. Lee Forestiere of Pine Bluff and Dan Forestiere of 
River Vale, N.J.; one daughter, Alice Gumbiner, San Rafael, Calif., and 
seven grandchildren.
      Funeral mass is Monday in New Orleans, La.

      Ms. Janet Reeves, 67 of Bradford, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 
at Harris Hospital.
      She was a retired teacher and a member of the Church of Christ.
      She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Jess and Mamie 
Reeves.
      Ms. Reeves is survived by several cousins, Beth Tucker, Bill 
Tucker, James Tucker, Viola Peebles, and Jean Hicks.

LYDIA MAE (GLENN) BINNING

      Mrs. Lydia Mae (Glenn) Binning, 73 of Newport, died Sunday, April 
14, 2002 in Sprinfield, Mo. She was born Jan. 28, 1929 in Lynn, Ark., 
the daughter of Walter Alvin and Hannah Idell (Goodwin) Glenn.
      Mrs. Binning was a retired telephone operator and was a member of 
the First Baptist Church of Newport. She was active in the Prison 
Ministry of the First Baptist Church of Newport. Mrs. Binning enjoyed 
gardening and growing flowers.
      She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bud Murphy and her 
second husband, James Theodore Binning; two sons, Bud Muprhy, Jr. and 
Larry Binning; four brothers, W.R. Glenn, Eugene Glenn, Turner Glenn, 
and George Glenn.
      Mrs. Binning is survived by one brother, Dr. Wayne Glenn of Little 
Rock; two sisters, Faye W. Helms of Newport and Martha Hunter of Lynn; a 
special friend, Joy Cliff of Newport; several nieces and nephews and 
great nieces and nephews.
      Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jackson's Newport 
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rodney Alexander officiating. Interment is 
in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
      Pallbearers are James C. Hunter, Ronnie Helms, Marvin Kennedy, 
Glenn Kennedy, Mike Glenn, George Glenn, Jr., and Taylor Helms.

ARNOLD ETHRIDGE

      Mr. Arnold Ethridge, 56 of Tuckerman, died Monday in a local 
hospital.
      He was a truck driver for American Freightways, Inc., an Air Force 
Veteran and member of the Tuckerman Family Worship Center. He was 
preceded in death by his mother, Iva Richie Ethridge.
      Mr. Ethridge is survived by his wife, Rose Mary Fortenberry 
Ethridge of Tuckerman; three sons, Clint and wife Stephanie Ethridge of 
Tuckerman, Mark and wife Rachel Ethridge of Tuckerman, and Shane 
Ethridge of Tuckerman; his father, Pat Ethridge of Alicia; two sisters, 
Lyndle "Tooter" Meeks of Black Rock and Sharon Morris Stoneham of 
Houston, Texas.
      Funeral service is 2 p.m. Thursday at the Tuckerman Family Worship 
Center with David Decker officiating with interment in Dowell's Chapel 
Cemetery.

ALBERT EVRIDGE

      Mr. Albert Evridge, 70 of Bradford, died Sunday, April 14, 2002 in 
Little Rock.
      He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Zelda Lamb 
Evridge. He was an Army veteran and a member of the Church of Christ.
      Mr. Evridge is survived by his wife, Truvetta Keyton Evridge of 
the home; two sons, Ronnie Evridge of Heber Springs and Tim Evridge of 
Bradford; three brothers, Bill Evridge, Clifford Evridge, and Floyd 
Evridge all of Pleasant Plains; two sisters, Pauline Shipp and Amanda 
Fulbright, both of Southside; four grandchildren, and one great-
grandchild.
      Funeral service was 3 p.m. Tuesday at Dillinger Chapel with 
Interment in Hindman Cemetery.

EDDIE DALE HONEY

      Mr. Eddie Dale Honey, 41 of McCrory, died Wednesday, April 10, 
2002 in Searcy.
      He was born May 8, 1960, in Los Angeles, Calif., the son of Billy 
Steve and Etta Mae (Berry) Honey. Mr. Honey married Miss Fonda 
Breckenridge on Aug. 22, 1987.
      He worked for Helena Chemical Company as a Certified Crop Advisor 
and was a member of the Beedeville Church of Christ. Mr. Honey was in 
the National Guard from 1980 to 1986. He was a model train fan; Mr. 
Honey had a love for toys especially remote control trains, boats, cars. 
His greatest joy was coaching his daughter, Kyndale's basketball team 
and watching her participate in softball. Mr. Honey enjoyed baseball, 
basketball, and football. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
      Mr. Honey was preceded in death by his mother, Etta Mae (Berry) 
Honey on Feb. 27, 1999; one brother, Oscar Honey and one sister, Cynthia 
"Cyndi" Beth Haskett on May 20, 2001.
      Mr. Honey is survived by his wife of 14 years, Fonda 
(Breckenridge) Honey of McCrory; three daughters, Katrina Lawman 
Alumbaugh and husband, Aaron of McCrory, Shonda Lawman Mullinax and 
husband, Justin of McCrory and Kyndale Elesin Honey of McCrory; his 
father and stepmother, Billy Steve and Glenda Kaye (Tyree) Honey of 
Tupelo; one brother, Gary Todd Honey of McCrory; one sister, Jeannie 
(Honey) Gaskin and husband, Dale of McCrory; one step-sister, Kim 
Marshall and husband, Craig of Jonesboro; one grandson, Zeke Alumbaugh; 
one brother-in-law, Louis Haskett; father and mother-in-law, Gerald and 
Ann (Williams) Breckenridge of Beedeville; brothers and sisters-in-law,

      Mrs. Alene (Deal) Marney, 88 of Newark, died Wednesday, April 10, 
2002 in Batesville. She was born Jan. 6, 1914 in Baxter, Ark., the 
daughter of Alfred Barter and Sarah Caroline (Merrill) Deal.
      Mrs. Marney was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist 
Church. She enjoyed arts and crafts, people, quilting, sewing, and 
gardening.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Bonom B. Marney; one 
daughter, Carreta Marney Smith; one brother, Ray Deal, and three 
sisters, Ethel Prince, Verbal Wood, and Lorene Bookout.
      Mrs. Marney is survived by three daughters, Joyce Moore, Barbara 
Gillmore, and Bonnie Jeffrey; one brother, Lee Roy Deal, two sisters, 
Marie Star and Audie Lowen; 11 grandchildren, Angela Wood, Karen New, 
John Gillmore, Chris Gillmore, Marney Gillmore, Kim Cole, Kelly Jackson, 
Carissa Harold, Alana Smith, Rusty Jeffrey, Laschel Jeffrey, and 19 
great-grandchildren.

      Mr. Robert Levi Motes, 91 of Bradford, died Saturday, April 13, 
2002.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Motes, parents David and 
Mary Edgar Motes, two daughters, Audrey Huskey and Kathryn Motes, four 
brothers, and three sisters. Mr. Motes liked hunting, fishing, 
gardening, and raising animals.
      He is survived by three sons, Michael Howard West of Mississippi, 
Robert Jospeh Motes of Missouri, and Dr. Raymond Andrew Motes of New 
Mexico; two daughters, Mable Margaret Bufford of Michigan, and Mildred 
Helen Mount of Bradford; one brother, John Henry Motes of Mountain View, 
19 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service was 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bradford Assembly of 
God. Interment was in Hickmon Cemetery.

      He was a retired restaurateur, and was a member of the Southside

Maude Marr Phillips.
      He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Howlett Phillips of the home;

      Mr. Jimmy Ray Wells, 59 of Birmingham, Ala., formerly of 
Harrisburg, died Saturday, April 13, 2002 at the V.A. Hospital in 
Birmingham, Ala.
      He was born July 11, 1942, the son of Marvin Wells and Myrtle 
(Pickens) Wells. He was a graduate of McCormick High School and a U.S. 
Navy veteran, having served in Vietnam. He was the developer and owner 
of Health Science Products, a dental manufacturing company in 
Birmingham.
      Mr. Wells is survived by his fiancee, Anita Bedford of Birmingham, 
Ala.; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Melba June Witt of Harrisburg, 
Dorothy Catherine and Johnny Gunter of Southhaven, Miss., Christine 
Brown of Harrisburg, Caroline and Michael Whaley of Hot Springs, Eva 
Wells of Harrisburg, and Wilma Donley of Newport; two brothers and 
sisters-in-law, Buddy and Shelba Wells of St. Louis, Mo., and Earl Wells 
of Birmingham, Ala.; one son, Rylan Wells of Birmingham; one daughter, 
Lisa Wells of Birmingham, and several nieces and nephews.
      Funeral service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Jackson's Harrisburg 
Funeral Home Chapel. Interment is in Holly Springs Cemetery.

CLYDE EDWARD WHITLATCH

      Mr. Clyde Edward Whitlatch, 76 of Harrisburg, died Thursday, April 
11, 2002 at his home in Harrisburg.
      He was born Nov. 22, 1925 in Trumann, the son of John Whitlatch 
and Lois (Garrett) Whitlatch. He was a retired timber cutter and a World 
War II U.S. Army veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a 
member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Harrisburg. In addition to his 
parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Gwendolyn Darling, two 
brothers, Chuck and Virgil Whitlatch, and two sisters, Geneva Hamilton 
and Helen Webb.
      Mr. Whitlatch is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mrs. Sue 
Whitlatch of the home; one sister, Louise Belfour of Baker, Ore.; four 
daughters, Jacquolun Roland, Debra Mears, and Lonene Hubbard, all of 
Jonesboro, and Charlene Qualls of Trumann; 11 grandchildren, and nine 
great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Saturday at the Harrisburg Memorial 
Park Cemetery with Rev. John Lindsey officiating. Interment was in

      Mr. Vernon Knox Anderson, 93 of Searcy, formerly of Tuckerman, 
died Tuesday, April 16, 2002. 
      He was a retired farmer, an Army veteran, and a member of the 
Tuckerman FreeWill Baptist Church when living in Tuckerman. 
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Anderson and Lena 
Davenport Anderson.
      Mr. Anderson is survived by one brother, Nathan Anderson of Troy, 
Mich., and one sister, Katie Benson of Searcy.

ALBERT HAWKINS

      Mr. Albert Hawkins, 89 of Harrisburg, died Monday, April 15, 2002 
at the Woodbriar Nursing Home in Harrisburg.
      He was born April 3, 1913 in Pleasant Plains, the son of the late 
Jim Hawkins and Ethel (Jackson) Hawkins. He was a former employee of the 
Missouri Pacific Railroad, a welder and farmer. In addition to his 
parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth (Pry) Hawkins, 
three daughters, Alberta Hawkins, Wanda Lee Hawkins, and Ethel Headrick; 
one brother, Issac Hawkins; two sisters, Ann Jones, and Eller Jones, and 
one granddaughter, Rachel Hawkins.
      Mr. Hawkins is survived by three sisters, Mae Creekmore of 
Trumann, Winnie Pry of Weona, and Ina Hitchcock of Mellbrook, Ill.; one 
son, A.J. Hawkins of Tracy City, Tenn.; three daughters, Georgeann 
McElyea of Marion, Patricia Deckelman of Harrisburg, and Joyce Barnes of 
Cherry Valley; 17 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
      Graveside funeral service was 3 p.m. Wednesday at Maple Springs 
Cemetery near Oil Trough with Rev. Terry Norman officiating.

      Mrs. Freda (Webb) Howard, 72 of Newport, died Monday, April 15, 
2002 in Jonesboro. She was born Aug. 26, 1930 in Newport, the daughter

      Mrs. Howard was a homemaker and a member of the Pentecostal 
Church. She enjoyed taking care of her pets and going fishing.
      Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by her husband, Rex Hooper; and 
one brother, Warren Webb.
      She is survived by two sons, Herman Murry of Newport and Jessie

FLOY MAE WILSON THORNTON JOHNSON

      Mrs. Floy Mae Wilson Thornton Johnson, 69 of McCrory, died Monday, 
April 15, 2002 at Central Arkansas Hospital in Searcy.
      She as born April 2, 1933 in Gregory, the daughter of the late 
Elton and Mae Boyles Wilson. She attended McCrory Schools. She was 
married to Grafton Thornton, who preceded her in death. Later she 
married Charles Johnson who also preceded her in death. She was a member 
of the Patterson Baptist Church. She had worked for Royal Shoe in 
McCrory for 9 years and then for American Greetings for 9 years until 
she took early retirement in 1985. She loved her church, handwork, 
camping, and was a Mother-figure to all young people she knew.
      Mrs. Johnson is survived by one daughter, Darlene Thornton Smith, 
and husband, Dewayne of McCrory; one step-son, Gary Johnson and wife 
Sharon of Bald Knob; three grandchildren, Devin Smith and wife Karen of 
Brinkley, Jericho Smith of Brinkley, Mandy Johnson of Bald Knob and a 
very special friend, Edna Austin of McCrory.
      Funeral service is 2 p.m. Friday at Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home 
Chapel in McCrory with Rev. Kenny Martin, pastor of the Monticello 
Church of God, officiating. Interment is in Woodman Cemetery in McCrory.

JIMMY "J. D." STEWART

      Mr. Jimmy "J. D." Stewart, 62 of Russellville, formerly of Pine 
Bluff, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at Sain Mary Regional Medical Center 
in Russellville. He was born May 8, 1939, in Swifton, the son of the 
late Alva Newton and Berchie Arlena Holcomb Stewart.
      He was reared and received his education in Swifton, graduating 
from Swifton High School. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and 
served four years. After being discharged from the military, he began 
working for the Southern Pacific Railroad, retiring in 1987, after 25 
years of service as an engineer. In his spare time, he enjoyed building 
and working on cars and going to auto races.
      He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Brent Stewart, and 
a brother, Alva Newton Stewart, Jr.
      Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shirley Marie 
Corley Stewart; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherri and Lorne Swain of 
Russellville, and Kerri and Jeff Threlkeld of Russellville; three 
grandchildren , Caitlyn Swain, Casey Threlkeld and Alex Threlkeld, all 
of Russellville; three brothers, Howard Stewart of North Little Rock, 
Bill Stewart of Biloxi, Miss., and Joe Stewart of Swifton; two sisters, 
Virginia Rowlett of Swifton and Dora Lee Ford of San Antonio, Texas; an 
aunt, Betty Bradshaw, and an uncle, J. B. Stewart, both of Pine Bluff.

FORREST SAMUEL "FROG" WOODRUFF

      Mr. Forrest Samuel "Frog" Woodruff, 82 of Newark, died Monday, 
April 15, 2002 in Evansville, Ind. He was born Jan. 3, 1920 in Newark, 
the son of Henry and Carrie (Vestal) Woodruff.
      Mr. Woodruff was a self-employed barber and worked at the OK 
Barber Shop in Newark for 52 and a half years before retiring. He was a 
member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Newark. Mr. Woodruff 
served in World War II U.S. Army Medical Corp. He fought in the Battle 
in Ardennes, the Colmar Pocket Battle in France and the Battle of the 
Rhur in Belgium, Holland, France, England, and Germany. Mr. Woodruff was 
a member of the Tate-Lynch Post #9577 V.F.W. of Newark and John Barnett 
Post #196 American Legion of Newark. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and 
spending time with his family.
      Mr. Woodruff was preceded in death by his wife of 52 and a half 
years, Ethel (Green) Woodruff on Jan. 24, 1998; one daughter Kathy Stout 
on Aug. 30, 1989; four brothers, Theodore Woodruff, James Woodruff, 
Finis Woodruff, and Rufus Woodruff; and three sisters, Flora Treadway, 
Sally Perryman, and De Etta Tate.
      He is survived by one daughter, Shirley Johnson and husband, 
Johnny of Newark; one brother, Tom Woodruff of Batesville; one sister, 
Mable Tate of Banning, Calif.; five grandchildren, Michael Powell of 
Newark, Brad Stout of Rosie, Deana Morris of Malvern, Jeanna Spencer of 
Forrest City, and Scott Johnson of Conway; five great-grandchildren, 
Seth Powell, Ashton Johnson, Lauren Taylor Johnson, Chris Spencer, and 
Tyler Spencer; two great-great grandchildren, Austin Spencer and Anna 
Spencer.

RAY HOWARD BALLARD

      Mr. Ray Howard Ballard, 83 of Hickory Ridge, died Sunday, April 
21, 2002 at the St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
      Mr. Ballard was a farmer in Cross County for many years before 
retiring. He was a member of the Hickory Ridge United Methodist church 
and a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Navy. 
      Mr. Ballard was a past member of the former American Legion Post 
in Hickory Ridge. He was a resident of the Beedeville, Fisher, and 
Hickory Ridge areas for most of his life. He was born April 18, 1919 and 
was married Sept. 25, 1937 to the former Miss Edith Mae Lemke, who 
preceded him in death on Nov. 5, 1998. 
      Mr. Ballard was an avid bird hunter and he enjoyed squirrel 
hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.
      Mr. Ballard is survived by four sons, Billy Ray Ballard, Pat 
Ballard, and Ricky Ballard all of Hickory Ridge, and Larry Ballard of 
Little Rock; three daughters, Diane Burton and Peggy Vines, both of 
Hickory Ridge and Donna Peeples of North Little Rock; one sister, Geneva 
Dixon of Searcy; one brother, Leon Ballard of Batesville, 18 
grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

ELMER D. BOMER

      Mr. Elmer D. Bomer, 84 of Waldenburg, died Saturday, April 20, 
2002. Mr. Bomer was a World War II Navy Veteran. He was retired from the 
McDowell Tire Company in Kansas City, Mo. 
      He lived in Waldenburg for the past six years. He was preceded in 
death by three sisters and four brothers.
      Mr. Bomer is survived by his wife Minnie McGrew Bomer of the home; 
two sons, Elmer Ray Bomer of Omaha, Neb., and Roger Dawson Bomer of 
Garden City, Mo.; two daughters, Betty Lee Morgan of Independence, Mo., 
and Linda Carol Mayfield of Waldenburg; one brother, Chester Bomer of 
Southside; two sisters, Clara B. McFall of Corning, and Joyce Marie Lowe 
of Newport; 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and three great-
great grandchildren.
      Funeral service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Roller-Farmers Union 
Chapel in Weiner. Interment is in Walker Cemetery.
      Pallbearers are Troy Mayfield, Ray Bomer, Chester Bomer, Jerry

LILLIAN ENGELBERG BROWNSTEIN

      Mrs. Lillian Engelberg Brownstein, 98 of Cleveland, Miss., and a 
long-time resident of Newport, died Friday, April 19, 2002. 
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Mose Brownstein.
      Mrs. Brownstein is survived by one daughter, Shirley B. Beringer 
of Montgomery; one sister, Dorothy Howard; two nieces, Jane-Ann Howard 
and Susan Howard, both of Texas; one nephew, Jimmy Sabin; grandchildren, 
Rick (Marlene) Beringer, Ken (Nathalie) Beringer, Betty (Bob) Goldberg, 
Leslie Beringer, and Harvey Fitterman; great-grandchildren, Michael 
(Lydia) Leigh Anne, Kevin, and Bradley Beringer, David Berman, Erik 
Goldberg, Baylan, Brown, Doran, and Asher Fitterman; great-great child, 
George Porter Beringer.
      Graveside service was 3 p.m. Sunday in Greenville, Miss.

LOUIE KENNETH COLLIER

      Mr. Louie Kenneth Collier, 82 of Harrisburg, died Wednesday, April 
17, 2002 at the St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
      He was born June 5, 1919 in Memphis, Tenn., the son of Lonnie 
Collier and Helen (Hill) Collier. Louie was an attorney and member of 
the Poinsett County Bar Association and the Arkansas Bar Association for 
35 years. He was a former partner in the law firm of Collier & Jennings. 
He was a former Harrisburg Municipal Judge and former member of the 
Harrisburg Rotary Club. He was an active member of the Harrisburg First 
United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School teacher, Lay 
Speaker, and was a member of the Administrative Board. He was a major 
and a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. In addition to his parents, he was 
preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Collier and a twin sister, Louise 
Ostby.
      Mr. Collier is survived by his wife of 59 years, Laura (Greer) 
Collier of the home; two daughters, Lou Anne Clements of Jonesboro and 
Becky Jennings of Harrisburg; six grandchildren, Dr. Todd Clements, 
Cindy McDaniel, Ken Jennings, Matt Clements, Kellie DeClerk, and Brent 
Jennings, and three great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service was 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist 
Church in Harrisburg with Tom Sullinger officiating.
      Interment was in Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery.
      Active pallbearers were Charles Nix, Larry Reddmann, Judge Rice 
Van Ausdall, Clyde Ford, Billy Joe Williams, and Randy Garrison.
      Honorary pallbearers were Judge Edward Maddox, Jim Osborn, Jess

PATSY MARIE (PRINCE) FOSTER

      Mrs. Patsy Marie (Prince) Foster of Weiner, formerly of Tuckerman, 
died Friday, April 19, 2002 in Weiner. She was born Oct. 4, 1950, the 
daughter of Ira S. and Mamie Belle (Elliot) Prince. She was a homemaker.
      Mrs. Foster was preceded in death by her husband, John Ervin 
Foster on July 7, 1998; one daughter, Mellisa Haskett; two brothers, 
Bobby Wayne Prince and Boyce Prince, and two sisters, Irene Holland and 
Carol Gaddis.
      She is survived by one son, Louis Haskett of Paragould; two 
daughters, Martha Murray of Roanoke, Texas, and Misty Runnels of Tulsa, 
Okla.; four brothers, Burl Prince, Jack Prince, Earl Prince, and Darell 
Prince, all of Grubbs; one sister, Jane Johnson Markin of Newport and 
five grandchildren.
      Graveside service was 2 p.m. Monday at Cheshier Cemetery with Rev. 
Neil Wilkerson officiating.

ALTON RAY GEORGE

      Mr. Alton Ray George of Newport died Sunday, April 21, 2002 in 
Fort Smith. He was born April 23, 1911 in Oil Trough, the son of Noah 
Hendrix and Alice (Pilgrim) George.
      Mr. George was a minister for 56 years and was serving as the 
minister at the Bradford Church of God. He also worked at Guinn & Monday 
Hardware store, where he acquired the nickname "Mr. Fix It." Mr. George 
enjoyed gardening and landscaping.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Addie Hazel George on June 
2, 2002; one brother, Hershel George; and three sisters, Lizzie (George) 
Ship, Opal (George) Haney, and Ira (George) Bradley.
      Mr. George is survived by his children, Lendol Ray George of 
Andersonville, Tenn., Hazel "Jean" Ahart of Fort Smith, Clois Dale 
George of Loganville, Ga., and Jackie Dean George of Hector; 22 
grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and two great-great 
grandchildren.
      Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jackson's Newport 
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Cliff Ahart officiating. Interment will be 
in Cofferville Cemetery at Possum Grape Community in Bradford. 
      Pallbearers are Joe McDaniel, Alton Dale George, Phillip George, 
Mike Meldrum, Steve Hughes, Mike George, Brad George, and Kenneth 
Reynolds. Honorary pallbearers will be Mitch Crum and Dan Crum.

LENA MAY HOUSE

      Mrs. Lena May House of Newark died Friday, April 19, 2002 in 
Batesville. She was born March 17, 1919 in Guion, the daughter of 
Charley Perry and Maude Marie (Landers) Daniels.
      Mrs. House was a homemaker and a member of the First Missionary 
Baptist Church in Newark.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Houston Eugene House on 
Oct. 2, 1998 and one sister, Ena Ray "Sister" Price.
      Mrs. House is survived by one brother, Benny Willis Daniels of 
Newark; one sister, Bobbie Jean Tate of Newark and several nieces and 
nephews.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Monday at the First Missionary Baptist 
Church in Newark with Rev. Bill Goodwin officiating. Interment was in 
Blue Springs Cemetery. Visitation is 6-9 p.m. Sunday.

ALTON "BUDDY" KOETTEL

      Mr. Alton "Buddy" Koettel of Newport died Saturday, April 20, 2002 
in Little Rock.
      He was born Nov. 9, 1921 in Remmel Community, Newport, the son of 
Charley and Lottie Belle (Pankey) Koettel. Mr. Koettel married Miss 
Belle Kirksey on Dec. 26, 1949.
      He was a mill operator for Revere Copper and Brass for 35 years, 
retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Holden Avenue Church of Christ 
in Newport. Mr. Koettel was a World War II Army veteran and a member of 
the Collier Massey post #4683 V.F.W. of Newport. His greatest enjoyment 
came from spending time with his family and watching sons and grandsons 
play sports.
      Mr. Koettel was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Caroline 
Koettel on Jan. 7, 1992.
      Mr. Koettel is survived by his wife of 52 years, Belle (Kirksey) 
Koettel of Newport; two sons, Garry Koettel and wife Vivian of 
Farmington, and Rodney Koettel and wife Patti of North Little Rock; one 
daughter, Debbie Bowman and husband, Roger of Newport; his twin sister, 
Cleo Davenport of Borger, Texas, and six grandsons, Ryan Bowan and wife 
Cortney, Peyton Bowman, Garrett Koettel, Tyler Koettel and Seth Koettel.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Tuedsday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel with Dr. Lou Butterfield and Mr. Garry Koettel officiating. 
Interment was in McCall-Remmel Cemetery.

DORTHA J. METCALF

      Mrs. Dortha J. Metcalf, 74 of Newport News, Va., formerly of 
Newport, died Saturday, April 20, 2002.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal C. Metcalf, and a 
daughter, Karen Louise Metcalf. 
      Mrs. Metcalf is survived by one son, Neal C. Metcalf, Jr., and his 
fiancee, Dana J. Frederick of Portsmouth, Va.; three daughters, Sarah 
Lynn Szabo and fiance Ramon Feito of Virginia Beach, Cathy D. Mills and 
husband Wesley of Portsmouth, Va., and Rebecca Leann Etheridge and 
husband, J.D. of Lynchburg, Va.; one brother, Leon White, of Newport; 
two sisters, Rosie Bullard of Minturn, and Maxine Peebles of Fairfield, 
Calif.; 6 grandchildren, Terri, Paul, Aaron, Angela, Victoria, and 
Sarah.
      Graveside service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sandhill Cemetery in 
Auvergne.

VELMER C. SCHOLL

      Mr. Velmer C. Scholl of Newport died Friday, April 19, 2002 in 
Newport. He was born Sept. 19, 1912 in Newark, the son of John and Zora 
(Lane) Scholl. Mr. Scholl married Miss Willa Woods on Aug, 14, 1949.
      He farmed until 1944 and then became an engineer for the Missouri 
Pacific Railroad until his retirement in 1975. 
      Mr. Scholl was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in 
Newark and enjoyed gardening, raising cattle, goats, hogs, and being 
with his grandchildren in the 25 years of his retirement.
      He was preceded in death by one brother, Lawrence Scholl, and one 
sister.
      Mr. Scholl is survived by his wife of 52 years, Willa (Woods) 
Scholl, of Newark; three sons, Bobby Neal Scholl of Kansas City, Mo., 
John Owen Scholl of Kearney, Mo., and Larry Ray Scholl of Joplin, Mo.; 
nine grandchildren, Bryan Scholl, Matt Scholl, Michele Scholl, Frank 
Scholl, Mark Scholl, Tim Scholl, April Scholl, William Scholl, and 
Krista Scholl, and five great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Missionary 
Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Goodwin officiating. Interment is in Mt. 
Zion Cemetery.
      Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

      Mr. Cledis "Skeet" Mooreland, 54, of Newport, died Saturday, April 
20, 2002 in a local hospital.
      He attended True Worship Fellowship Church, was a 1965 graduate of 
Branch High School, and a farm laborer.
      Mr. Mooreland is survived by one son, Chris Mooreland of Newport; 
two daughters, Tracy Hampton of Little Rock and Gia Sills of Michigan; 
one sister, Ella "Cookie" Mooreland of Little Rock; two brothers, 
Herchel Mooreland and Billy Mack Mooreland of Newport, and 9 
grandchildren.
      Funeral service is 1 p.m. Saturday at the Holden Avenue Church of 
Christ with interment in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Shoffner.
