BOBBY G. BARBER

      Mr. Bobby G. Barber, 68 of Newark, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002 in 
Batesville. He was born in Magness on Jan. 31, 1933 the son of Floyd and 
Edith Barber.
      He was retired from the United States Air Force and was an Air 
Force veteran. Mr. Barber was of the Baptist belief and enjoyed auctions 
and gardening.
      Mr. Barber was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Edith 
Barber; one step-son, William Walker; one brother, Lincoln Barber; and 
one sister.
      He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Betty (Hamilton) Barber; 
one son, Stanley Eric Barber; two step-sons, Robert Walker and Eddie 
Walker; two daughters, Deborah Carol and Donna Smith; five step-
daughters, Teresia Martin, Kathy Lockley, Anna Mae Walker, Ouitana 
Icededo, and Marjorie Surface; three brothers, Junior Barber, Dean 
Barber, and W. D. Barber; one sister, Rowena Boltinghouse; 22 
grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service is 10 a.m. Friday at the Newark First Missionary 
Baptist Church with Bro. Bill Goodwin officiating. Interment is in Blue 
Springs Cemetery.
      Pallbearers are Todd Leonard, Travis Barnes, Larry Nelson, Adrian 
Stanisor, Charlie Ramey and David McClellan. Honorary pallbearers are 
Chris Lockley, Therold Martin and Rod Smith.

ANGEL MARIE ISLEY

      Infant Angel Marie Isley of Oil Trough died Saturday, Jan. 26, 
2002 in Little Rock. She was born Jan. 26, 2002 in Little Rock the 
daughter of Luke Isley and Summer Brightwell of Oil Trough.
      She is survived by her parents; two sisters, Emily Isley and 
Mollie Isley, both of Oil Trough; paternal grandmother and step-
grandfather, Debbie and J.W. Thomas of Heber Springs; paternal 
grandfather, Michael Isley of Kentucky; paternal great-grandparents, Von 
and Eva Brokaw of Batesville; maternal grandmother and friend, Kathy 
Phillips and Daniel Moss of Oil Trough; maternal grandfather and step-
grandmother, Johnny and Jessica Brightwell of Batesville; maternal 
great-grandparents, Donald and Peggy Phillips of Batesville; maternal 
great-grandparents, Alden and Mary Brightwell of Batesville; maternal 
great-great-grandmother, Marie Phillips of Batesville; and a very 
special friend, Linda Foster.
      Graveside services are 10 a.m. Friday at Egner Cemetery at 
Batesville.

EVA HAYES LOGAN

      Mrs. Eva Hayes Logan, 49 of Peachtree City, Ga., passed away at 
home on Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2002. 
      Mrs. Logan is a native of Memphis, Tenn., had resided in the 
Atlanta area since 1989 and had actively participated in several Fayette 
volunteer community services. 
      She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Chris Logan; step-
mother, Irene Hayes of Beech Bluff, Tenn.; sisters, Wanza Wilkin of 
Newport, Peggy Marshall and Hazel Dalton, both or Corinth, Miss.; 
brother, Lonzo Hayes, Jr. of Calabash, N.C.; nine nieces and nephews; 
several great-nieces and nephews.
      Memorial services are Friday at Peachtree City United Methodist 
Church at 1 p.m. by Rev. Chuck Hodges and assisted by Rev. Herbert Long. 
A private prayer servicve will be conducted in Memphis at a time to be 
determined. Interment is in Memphis Memorial Park Mausoleum. 
      In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be 
made to VHL Family Alliance, 171 Clinton Rd., Brookline, MA 02445 or to 
a charity of the donor's choice.

KATY BROWN

      Katy Brown, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Luther and Inez 
Whitlock of Tuckerman, was born on March 27, 1925. She passed from this 
life on Jan. 26, 2002 at her home in Mojave, Calif.
      She is survived by her husband, Sandford Brown; two 
granddaughters, Brook and Beth Wilborn; and one brother, Lockin 
Whitlock; four sisters, Juanita Tomlinson, Joyce Hennessee, Betty 
Greulich and Julia Robinson.
      The body of Ms. Brown was creamated, and her remains were thrown 
into the ocean.


ROY WAYNE DOBBS

      Mr. Roy Wayne Dobbs, 54 of Kingsford Heights, Ind., died Sunday, 
Feb. 3, 2002 in Michigan City, Ind. He was born April 24, 1947 in 
Tuckerman the son of Marion Lee and Jessica Lou (Lacey) Dobbs.
      Mr. Dobbs was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Lee and 
Jessica Lou (Lacey) Dobbs.
      He is survived by two sons, Harold Dobbs of Bradford and Charles 
Wayne Dobbs of Newport; one daughter, Jessica Marie Dobbs of Bradford; 
two brothers, Robert Dobbs of Michigan City, Ind. and Tommy Dobbs of 
Batesville; and one sister, Earlene Feltman of Benton.
      Funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel. Interment is in Gracelawn Cemetery.

ALICE CEABELL (PHIFER) HEATHERLY

      Mrs. Alice Ceabell (Phifer) Heatherly, 102 of Tuckerman, died 
Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002. She was born in Mountain Home on Sept. 5, 1899 the 
daughter of Bill and Maggie Phifer.
      Mrs. Heatherly had a teaching degree and worked as a waitress and 
in retail sales before retiring. She was a member of the Church of 
Christ in Tuckerman.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Earl Heatherly on 
Sept. 28, 1983.
      Mrs. Heatherly is survived by her son, Hubert Earl Heatherly, Jr. 
of Centialia, Wash.; one daughter, Macel Tims of Newport; and four 
grandchildren.
      Funeral service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel. Interment is in Walnut Grove Cemetery.

SUE LAFOLLETTE

      Mrs. Sue Lafollette, 46 of Trumann, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 at 
her home in Trumann. She was born Feb. 13, 1955 in Marked Tree the 
daughter of Elgin Brock and Mary (Conyers) Brock Wells. She was a 
homemaker and of the Pentecostal belief.
      Survivors include her husband of 16 years, Jeff Lafollette of the 
home; three brothers, Lowell Brock of Apache Junction, Ariz., Frank 
Brock of Winkerman, Ariz. and David Brock of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; one son, 
Joseph Vangness of Trumann; two daughters, Dawn Moore of Jonesboro and 
Amber Davidson of Harrisburg; and one grandchild, Patrick Scott Moore.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Jackson's Harrisburg 
Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Darrell Miller officiating. Interment 
followed in Marked Tree Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Del Hannon, Jason Garrett, Nick Garrett, Frank 
Ray, Jr., Donald Norris and David Gairhan. Honorary pallbearers were 
Donald Guthrie, Ralph Guthrie, Theo Austin, Danny Biggers, Tony

CLARA DAVIS MORGAN

      Clara Davis Morgan, 83 of Grubbs, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 in 
Newport. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, 
Clyde David Morgan, one daughter and her parents.
      Survivors include two sons, Joseph Doutre' of Washington State and 
David Doutre' of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Linda Maez of Grubbs 
and Delsa D'Amaro of Middleton, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Sandburg of 
Ogden, Utah and Myrta Hale of Grantsville, Utah; six grandchildren and 
several great-grandchildren.
      Graveside service was 10 a.m. Monday at Ballews Chapel in Grubbs.

CARROLL FOX OWENS

      Mr. Carroll Fox Owens, 75 of Beebe, formerly of Bald Knob, died 
Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002 in Little Rock. He was born April 4, 1926 in Tupelo 
the son of Ed, Sr. and Myrtle (Fox) Owens.
      Mr. Owens retired in 1985 as an operator for Texas Eastern 
Corporation after 33 years of service. He was a member of Central 
Baptist Church of Bald Knob for 50 years, where he taught a Sunday 
School class. He was very active in both Sunday School and church. Mr. 
Owens was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of the V.F.W. in 
Searcy. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and following his grandchildren's 
participation in all sports and activities.
      He was preceded in death by two brothers, Aubrey Owens and Edwin 
Owens; three sisters, Louise Powell, Cecil Owens and Sarah Ellen Morgan.
      Mr. Owens is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Jo (Harris) 
Owens of Beebe, formerly of Bald Knob; two daughters, Carolyn Sue Bivens 
and husband, Jim of Beebe, and Kathy Jo Williams and husband Keith of 
Beebe; five grandchildren, Mark Bivens and wife, Wendy, Owen Bivens and 
wife, April, Jodi Zeigler and husband, Slade, Jerrod Williams and 
Janalyn Williams; and nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
      Funeral service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Central Baptist Church in 
Bald Knob with Bro. Claude Gibbs officiating. Interment is in Walnut 
Grove Cemetery in Newport.
      Pallbearers are the Sunday School class and deacons of the Central 
Baptist Church.

CECIL SHOPHER

      Mr. Cecil Shopher, 73 of Harrisburg, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 at 
his home.
      He was born Sept. 12, 1928 in Harrisburg the son of Melvin Oscar 
Shopher and Winnie Laura (Austin) Shopher. He was a retired construction 
worker, a former game warden and security guard. 
      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two 
brothers, Gene and Garland Shopher; and one sister, Mary Harris. He was 
of the Pentecostal faith.
      Survivors include his former spouse, Beulah Dail of Harrisburg; 
two sisters, Eva Nelson of Port Charlotte, Fla. and Frankie Shopher of 
Port Charlotte, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Nora "Sis" Shopher of 
Harrisburg; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Lannie Pruiett of 
Aiken, S.C., Martha and Steve Thompson of Atlanta, Ga., Linda and John 
Kessman of St. Joseph, Mich., and P. Jeanette and Dr. Frank Prout of 
Knoxville, Tenn.; one nephew, Garland Shopher of Bradford; 12 
grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service was 11 a.m. Monday at the Jackson's Harrisburg 
Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Eugene Dixon and Bro. Carl Dixon 
officiating. Interment followed in Bolivar Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Garland Shopher, Steve Thompson, James Pruiett, 
Rob Pruiett, Neb Thomas and Kenneth Brand. Honorary pallbearers were R. 
A. Page and Alvin Jenkins.

NEAL JUDSON SNAPP

      Mr. Neal Judson Snapp, 81 of Paragould, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 
2002 in Paragould. He was born in Salado on Jan. 23, 1921 the son of 
Edmon Earl and Willie Mae (Fugson) Snapp.
      Mr. Snapp worked for White Shoe Factory for 40 years and then went 
to Sprocket and Gear in Paragould for eight years. He was a member of 
the Bethel Church of Christ. Mr. Snapp was a U.S. Navy veteran.
      He is preceded in death by his wife, Edith (Lassiter) Snapp on 
Jan. 28, 1996; one brother, Rader Snapp; and one sister, Ida Snapp.
      Mr. Snapp is survived by two sons, Billy Snapp of Paragould and 
Gerald Snapp of Paragould; one daugther, Joyce Roberts of Paragould; 
five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
      Graveside service was 10 a.m. Monday at Egner Cemetery at Salado 
with Mr. Lonnie Pyle officiating. 
      Pallbearers were Doug Coleman, Dennie Cooper, Charles Roberts, 
Calvin Lyles, Jerry Clark and Junior Clark.

TROY LEE ROBINSON, SR.

      Troy Lee Robinson, Sr., 87 of Tuckerman, died Feb. 6 in Newport. 
He was a 32 Degree Mason, a certified lecturer and instructor, and a 
Methodist. He worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for many years, 
where he was a bookkeeper.
      Survivors include his wife, Sue Kennedy Robinson of Tuckerman; two 
sons, Troy Lee Robinson, Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas and David Robinson 
of Campbell Station; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
      Graveside memorial service will be at Gracelawn Cemetery with time 
announced later.
      The family requests no flowers or food to the home please. 
Memorials may be made to your favorite charity or the American Diabetes 
Association.

      Mr. L. G. Seanard of Tuckerman died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 in

      Mrs. Juanita Lee (Winfrey) Short, 76 of North Little Rock, 
formerly of Newport, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002 in North Little Rock. 
She was born in West Waldenburg on Sept. 10, 1925 the daughter of Frank 
A. and Gracie Nona Ray (Barnwell) Winfrey.
      She was a homemaker and worked at Victor Metals for 10 years and 
was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Newport. Mrs. Short 
enjoyed cooking and entertaining her family. She loved to sing and was 
musically talented.
      Mrs. Short was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Homer 
Author Short on Nov. 24, 1981; one son, Stanley Author Short on Aug. 13, 
1955; one daughter, Vickie Ray Short on Dec. 30, 1987; one sister, 
Lucille Turner on July 3, 1993; one grandson, Ronald Shane Short on 
March 10, 1995.
      She is survived by her companion of 20 years, Dan Riley of North 
Little Rock; one son, Ronald A. Short of Newport; two daughters, Judy 
McGuire and husband, Charles of Newport, and Cindy Carty and husband, 
Adam of Hot Springs; one brother, John C. "J. C." Winfrey of Newport; 
eight grandchildren, Pam Valencia, LaRhonda Gansz, Brian Shawn Short, 
Scotty Short, Kasey Garner, Lane McGuire, Tara Samples and Sean Patrick 
Riley; and 11 great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service is 10 a.m. Friday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel with Bro. Leon Tidwell officiating. Interment will be in

      Ollie Caldwell, 89 of Valley View, formerly of Fisher, died Friday 
in Jonesboro.
      Mrs. Caldwell was born Jan. 17, 1913 in Mississippi County to the 
late Luther and Martha (Cotton) Hicks. She was a homemaker and of the 
Church of God belief.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed 
Caldwell; three sisters, Flora Hicks, Jane Payton and Lillie Smith; two 
brothers, Cecil Hicks and Jimmy Hicks; and one son, Ules Caldwell.
      Survivors include one sister, Lucille Babbs of Osceola; two sons, 
Otha Caldwell of Jacksonport and Mickey Caldwell of Waldenburg; two 
daughters, Marlene Moss of Valley View and Maryline Bolden of 
Harrisburg; two grandchildren, David Lee Caldwell and Tracy Edward 
Bolden; three great-grandchildren, Randon Bolden, Micah Bolden and 
Daylon Bolden.
      Funeral service was 11 a.m. Monday at Jackson's Harrisburg Funeral 
Home Chapel with interment in Fisher Cemetery.

LESI ARLENE CONDRA CHAMBLISS

      Mrs. Lesi Arlene Condra Chambliss, 48 of Pocahontas, formerly of 
Harrisburg, died Wednesday at her home. She was born June 23, 1953 in 
Benton the daughter of Arvel Condra and Dortha (Reese) Condra, who 
preceded her in death. Lesi was a 1971 graduate of Harrisburg High 
School and was a caregiver. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist 
Church in Harrisburg.
      Survivors include one brother, Bobby Condra of Trumann; two 
daughters, Fonda Stinosa of Mississippi and Nicole Pugh of Mississippi; 
and four grandchildren.
      Graveside service was 2 p.m. Sunday at the Bethel Cemetery near 
Harrisburg.

JACK KENNEDY HARDIN, SR.

      Mr. Jack Kennedy Hardin, Sr., 64 of Tupelo, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 
2002 in Newport. He was born Feb. 13, 1937 in Tupelo the son of Luther 
A. and Lillie (Johnson) Hardin. Mr. Hardin married Miss Mary K. 
Carrothers on Feb. 8, 1964.
      He was a 1955 graduate of Newport High School and attended 
Arkansas State University in Jonesboro where he studied Animal Husbandry 
and Agronomy. Mr. Hardin was a retired self-employed farmer.
      Farming was his life and he was outstanding in his career. Mr. 
Hardin was one of the first in this area to receive a State Star Farmer 
F.F.A. Award and in 1969, he received the state O.Y.F. "Outstanding 
Young Farmer" award. Mr. Hardin traveled to Minnesota for the O.Y.F. 
National Finals. In 1972, the Hardin family was voted District North 
Central Farm Family, and 20 years later in 1992, his family won the 
State Farm Family Award that was sponsored by AP&L and the Arkansas 
Press Association. Mr. Hardin was active with U of A Rice Research 
Station at Stuttgart. He grew rice research seed plots on his farm in 
Tupelo for several years.
      Mr. Hardin was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tupelo 
where he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tupelo Men's Sunday 
School Class.
      He loved his community and was always interested in giving of 
himself. He served on the Tupelo Town Council for 30 years from 1966-
1996. He enjoyed auctioneering and had a degree in auctioneering from 
Mason City, Iowa. Mr. Hardin volunteered his auctioneering services to 
benefit community organizations.
      He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and 
brother.
      Mr. Hardin was preceded in death by one son, Jack Kennedy Hardin, 
Jr. on July 2, 1988; and two brothers, Millard George Hardin and Luther 
S. Hardin.
      He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary K. (Carrothers) 
Hardin of Tupelo; one son, Millard Carrothers Hardin of Tupelo; four 
grandchildren, Hannah Marie Hardin, William Coy Hardin, Joseph Jack 
Hardin, Millard Matthew Hardin, and their mother, Susan (Shelton) 
Hardin, all of Tupelo; one brother, Billy Joe Hardin, Sr. and wife Doris 
of Tupelo; one sister, Eleanor (Hardin) Conn and husband James of 
Searcy; and two sisters-in-law, Chrystal Hardin of Searcy and Coryth 
Hardin, formerly of Newport; three nephews, Lu Hardin of Russellville, 
Jack Conn of Minneapolis, Minn. and Bob Conn of Tampa, Fla.
      Funeral service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel with former State Senator and nephew, Mr. Lu Hardin, and Mr. 
J. L. May and Pastor Claude Gibbs officiating. Interment is in Walnut 
Grove Cemetery.
      Pallbearers are Chester Lynn Hardin, Toby McDonald, Bob McCollum, 
Noal Lawhon, Jacko Garrett, Jim Wood, Harrel Clark and Larry Jones. 
Honorary pallbearers are the First Baptist Church of Tupelo Men's Sunday 
School Class and the Hardin Farm Employees.

BARBARA LLOYD

      Mrs. Barbara Lloyd, 65 of Swifton, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002 in 
Swifton. She was born Nov. 10, 1936 in Tuckerman the daughter of W. F. 
"Sam" and Pearl (Massey) McGinnis.
      Mrs. Lloyd was working as a foster grandparent in kindergarten at 
the Swifton Public Schools and was a member of the Swifton Church of 
Christ.
      She was employed with Brown-Jordan Corporation for several years. 
Later, Mrs. Lloyd went to college and graduated, at age 62, from 
Arkansas State University-Newport with an associate degree in Computer 
Science.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William 
Paul McGinnis and Utah Raud McGinnis; one son, Scotty Mack Gates; and 
one granddaughter, Angela Marie Pinkston.
      Mrs. Lloyd is survived by her husband, Willard Leon Lloyd of 
Swifton; four daughters, Pamala Darlene Evans of Swifton, Lecia Ann 
Templeton of Tuckerman, Melody Jane Fender of Walnut Ridge and Barbara 
Gail Cliff of Swifton; one step-son, Millard Leon Lloyd of Jonesboro;

      Eunice May, 91 of Newport died Saturday in Newport. She was a 
member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Newport.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Rowny May; her parents,

      Survivors include one son, Bobby Joe May of Roland; one brother, 
Ira Taylor; one sister, Aslee Tims of Newport; six grandchildren and 
several great-grandchildren.

      Mr. L. G. Seanard, 72 of Tuckerman, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 
in Tuckerman. He was born in Judsonia on April 21, 1929 the son of Hugh 
M. and Treacie (Muer) Seanard.
      Mr. Seanard was a retired truck driver for ABF Trucking and a 
member of the Church of Christ. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with ACACIA-
SMDALZELL Lodge #67 in Spring Valley, Ill. Mr. Seanard was a United 
States Army veteran and served during the Korean War.
      Mr. Seanard was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, 
Lloyd Seanard; and one sister, Virginia Lee Seanard.
      He is survived by his wife, Loretta (Jones) Seanard of Tuckerman; 
two sons, Terry Seanard of Stillwater, Pa., and Ed Seanard and wife 
Kathy of Ft. Lewis, Wash.; four daughters, Wendy Ausburn and husband 
Dale of Maumelle, Millie Wickliffe and husband Bo of Sherwood, Ala., 
Margie Ramsey of Cabot and Anna Story and husband Redgy of Searcy; four

H. C. BENNETT

      Mr. H. C. Bennett, 84 of Alicia, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002 at his 
home. He was born Dec. 25, 1917 in Beedeville the son of Bryant and Nora 
Lee (Webb) Bennett.
      Mr. Bennett was self-employed farmer and a member of the 
Missionary Baptist Church. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and 
was awarded two Bronze Stars, two Ribbons, and Medal of Conduct. Mr. 
Bennett enjoyed auctions and fishing.
      He was preceded in death by one son, Brett Bennett; four brothers, 
Oscar Bennett, Walter Bennett, J. T. Bennett and Sydney Bennett; five 
sisters, Dora Henson, Ethel Greene, Irene White, Kathern Dixon and 
Callie Ramsey; and one grandson, Harold "Corky" Bennett.
      Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, Mable Louise (Everett) 
Bennett of Alicia; three sons, Bryant Bennett of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., 
David Bennett of Grubbs, and Tink Bennett of Little Rock; one daughter, 
Gloria Cuccarese of Garden Cove, Calif.; one sister, Ineze Tapp of

      Mrs. Emma Jewel Clements, 78 of Harrisburg, died Monday, Feb. 11, 
2002 in Jonesboro. She was born Oct. 24, 1923 in Harrisburg the daughter 
of the late Harry and Bessie (Austin) Cleaves. She was a homemaker. 
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her 
husband, Jim Clements, and one sister, Ruby Cleaves.
      Survivors include four sisters, Emma Jean Valentine of Slayden, 
Miss., Janice Welch of Pocahontas, Wilma Volner of Highland, Ind. and 
Betty Smith of Trumann; two brothers, Edmond Cleaves of Jonesboro and 
Johnny Cleaves of Jonesboro; two sons, Larry Clements of Cherry Valley 
and Jimmy Clements of Harrisburg; one daughter, Carolyn Riethbaum of 
Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Dereck Clements, Carrie Clements, 
Michael Blackwood and Jeremy Blackwood; and two great-grandchildren, 
Sarah Beth Clements and Tanner Jordan Blackwood.

ESTELL MORELAND POWELL

      Estell Moreland Powell, longtime resident of McCrory, died Monday, 
Feb. 11, 2002 in Newport. He was 85.
      Funeral service is 10 a.m. Friday at the Rhodes and Son McCrory 
Chapel with Bro. Charles Vaughn, pastor of Amagon Baptist Church, 
officiating. Interment is in Eight Mile Cemetery near Beedeville.
      Mr. Powell was born Sept. 26, 1916 in Hickory Ridge the son of the 
late James J. and Jetta Powell. He was of the Baptist faith. Harold 
Lewis Farms employed Mr. Powell before his retirement. He was a World 
War II Army veteran.
      Mr. Powell is survived by two brothers, Leon Powell of Balch and 
Larry Powell of Amagon; and one sister, Lottie Luster of McCrory.

JIMMIE RAY 'TOM' SIMMONS

      Mr. Jimmie Ray "Tom" Simmons, 73 of Newport, died Tuesday, Feb. 
12, 2002 in Newport. He was born April 4, 1928 in Augusta the fifth 
child of Benjamin Columbus and Mary Agnes (Ash) Simmons.
      Mr. Simmons graduated from Augusta High School and attended 
Southern State University in Magnolia where he played football as a 
Mulerider for four years. He worked for Colonia Bread Company for 13 and 
one-half years and retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield as a health and 
life agent. After his retirement, Mr. Simmons worked as head of 
housekeeping at Newport Hospital until 1998.
      He was a member of the Holden Avenue Church of Christ in Newport 
and was a member of the senior group that visited nursing homes and 
hospitals. Mr. Simmons was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of 
the Collier-Massey Post #4683 V.F.W. of Newport and Neil-Griffin Post 
#47 American Legion of Newport. Mr. Simmons enjoyed golfing and 
attending sporting events. He loved people and especially enjoyed 
spending time with friends and family.
      Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by a wife, Thelma O. Simmons; 
one brother, H. D. Simmons; and one sister, Sally Ruth O'Bryan.
      He is survived by his wife of nine years, Judy Carolyn (Simmons) 
Simmons of Newport; one son, Brigadier General James Edwin Simmons and 
wife Rita of Alabama; one step-son, Michael Shawn Cope and wife Karri 
Ellen of Batesville; four brothers, John Simmons and Arnold Simmons, 
both of Little Rock, Bill Simmons of Wichita, Kan. and Rev. Floyd 
Simmons of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Annie Branch of Shafter, Calif. 
and Virginia Kemp of Pryor, Okla.; one grandson, James Franklin Simmons 
and wife Michelle; and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
      Funeral service is 2 p.m. Saturday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel with Rev. Floyd Simmons and Mr. Llano Robinson officiating. 
Interment is in Augusta Memorial Park Cemetery.

      Mr. Brown had retired from the U.S. Army with 26 years of service 
and had retired from the Newport School District where he was an 
R.O.T.C. instructor for 13 years. He was a member of the First Christian 
Church of Newport. Mr. Brown was a World War II, Korean and Vietnam war 
veteran. He was a member of the Collier-Massey Post #4683 V.F.W. of 
Newport and Masonic Lodge. Mr. Brown enjoyed auctions, bingo and loving 
his grandchildren.
      Mr. Brown was preceded in death by one brother, Donnie Brown, and 
one sister, Juanita Brown Brice.
      He is survived by his wife of 52 yeras, Mariella (Reese) Brown of 
Newport; one son, Bobby Brice Brown and wife Renee of Lansing, Kan.; two

      Mrs. Joyce Carraway, 70 of Columbus, Ohio, died Monday, Feb. 25, 
2002 in Columbus. Mrs. Carraway was a native of Bentonia, Miss., and a 
resident of Hamburg for 18 years before moving to Columbus, Ohio five 
years ago. She was also a former resident of Lake Village. She was a 
retired nurse and a member of the First Baptist Church in Hamburg. 
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh White Carraway in 
1994; her parents, Claude and Annie Sibley Taylor; two brothers, Claude 
Taylor, Jr. and Lamar Taylor; and three sisters, Bertie Gordon, Nattlea 
Taylor and Iva Loyce Taylor.
      Mrs. Carraway is survived by three sons, Steve Carraway of Dallas, 
Texas, Mike Carraway of Dumas and Richard Carraway of Newport; a 
daughter, Cindy Crouch of Blacklick, Ohio; a brother, Marion Taylor of 
Fairfield Bay; a sister, Nana Lane of Monroe, La.; and three grandsons, 
Matthew and Joshua Crouch and Noah Carraway.
      Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 at Jones Funeral 
Home of Hamburg. Visitation will be 10 until 12 Thursday at the National 
Funeral Home in Clarksdale, Miss. with a 2 p.m. service in their chapel.

      Thomas Eugene Epperson, 78 of Bradford, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 
in Newport. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Agnes 
Epperson, one sister and four brothers. He was a World War II veteran, 
served with the U.S.S. Guadalcanal Task Group aboard the U.S.S. Pope DE-
134 destroyer.
      Survivors include his wife, Billie Jean Gray Epperson of Bradford; 
three sons, Thomas Lynn and wife Beverly Epperson of Olyphant, Hubert 
and wife Priscilla Epperson of Bradford, and Dale and wife Judy Epperson

      Mrs. Gladys Lola Hamby, 90 of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of 
Newport, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002.
      She was born in Independence County, Arkansas on Feb. 18, 1912 the 
daughter of John and Minnie Ann (Sturch) Mitchum.
      Mrs. Hamby was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
      Mrs. Hamby was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Blane 
Hamby on Dec. 12, 1992.
      She is survived by one daughter, Lola Ann Dunham of San Antonio, 
Texas; two grandchildren, Chono Cantu of San Antonio, Texas and JoAnn 
Moser and husband David of San Antonio, Texas; and four great-
grandchildren, David Alan Moser, Jr. and wife Theresa of San Antonio, 
Texas, Michael Alan Moser and wife Kathryn Elizabeth of Norfolk, Va., 
Kristina Ann Moser of San Antonio, Texas and Melissa Ann Moser of San 
Antonio, Texas; one great-great-grandchild, Madison Anne Moser of San 
Antonio, Texas.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Monday at Walnut Grove Cemetery.

SHELBA JEAN JAGGERS

      Shelba Jean Jaggers, 64 of Newport, died Feb. 23 at her home. She 
was a CNA at Woodlawn Nursing Home in Batesville and very artistic. 
      She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor E. Jaggers and 
Dona Lee Beeler Jaggers; and one daughter, Natalie Harris Bland.
      Survivors include her children's father, Acy Harris of Cabot; two 
sons, Dewayne and wife Susan Harris of Hot Springs, and Charles and wife 
Donna J. Harris of Brownwood, Texas; two daughters, Donna and Tony 
Britton of Longview, Texas, and Lori Harris of Beaver Falls, Pa.; nine 
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
      Memorial service is 1 p.m. Tuesday at Dillinger Funeral Home 
Chapel with Dale Bonner officiating. There will be a private burial 
service.

CECIL C. KING

      Mr. Cecil C. King, 82 of Harrisburg, died Sunday in Harrisburg. He 
was born March 27, 1919 in Ravendon to the late Mose and Bertha (Wilson) 
King. 
      He was a retired carpenter, a WWII Army veteran and a member of 
the First Baptist Church in Imboden. 
      In addition to his parents, Mr. King was preceded in death by his 
wife, Sylvia (Morris) King; and infant son; three brothers, Marvin, John 
and Jesse King; and one sister, Kathryn King.
      Survivors include four sisters, Pearlie Hirsch of Ravendon, Thelma 
Berry of O'Kean, Irene Baird of Williford and Maudie Leninger of 
Schenectady, N.Y.; three brothers, Willie King, Claude King of Aurora, 
Ill. and Luther King of Pocahontas; three sons, Claudia Carl King of 
Burchtree, Mo., Donald E. King of Bono and George Wayne King of 
Harrisburg; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service was 3 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson's Harrisburg Funeral 
Home Chapel with Rev. Terry Herndon officiating. Interment was in 
Bolivar Cemetery near Harrisburg.
      Pallbearers were his grandsons.

EILEEN ELIZABETH (WARD) LAKATOS

      Mrs. Eileen Elizabeth (Ward) Lakatos, 79 of McCrory, died Friday, 
Feb. 22, 2002 in McCrory. She was born in East St. Louis, Ill. on Feb. 
11, 1923 the daughter of Charles and Elizbeth (Andres) Ward.
      She was employed by Edison Brothers as an accounting clerk and was 
a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church at Granite City. Mrs. 
Lakatos was a member of the Fitomega Social Club and was a dance 
instructor. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing.
      Mrs. Lakatos is survived by her husband, Frank Charles Lakatos of 
Freeburg, Ill.; three sons, Dana Lakatos of Catlin, Ill., Mark Lakatos 
of Pontoon Beach, Ill. and Thad Lakatos of Freeburg, Ill.; one daughter, 
Pam Medlin of Williamstown, W.V.; three brothers, Melvin Ward, Charles 
Ward and Joseph Ward; three sisters, Margaret Ward, Virginia Poulos and 
Thelma Ward; 10 grandchildren, Dan Medlin, Tim Medlin, Krissten Bagwell, 
Matt Medlin, Stacia McGuire, Chad Lakatos, Adam Lakatos, Aarron Lakatos, 
Sean Lakatos, Mason Lakatos; and nine great-grandchildren, Jordan 
Bagwell, Peyton Bagwell, Kimberly Medlin, Kyle Medlin, Kristopher 
Medlin, Annelise Medlin, Aubrie Medlin, Zachary McGuire and Kalee 
McGuire.
      Graveside service was 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, 
Granite City, Ill.
      Pallbearers were Dan Medlin, Tim Medlin, Matt Medlin, Chad 
Lakatos, Adam Lakatos and Rick Bagwell.

JOE MONTGOMERY

      Mr. Joe Montgomery, 94 of Newport, died Feb. 21, 2002 at his home. 
He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where he served as deacon.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Emmaline Montgomery; his 
mother, Mrs. Emma Leneves and father, Tom Montgomery; and a brother, V. 
L. Miller.
      Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Janet Dililah Clay; a sister, 
Mrs. Callie Jocie of Diaz; and a host of relatives and friends.
      Funeral service was 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove Baptist Church 
with Rev. Ira Crite officiating. Interment was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

PAULINE FINK PERRY

      Mrs. Pauline Fink Perry, age 78, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002 in 
Newport. She was born in Newark on June 3, 1923 to the late Ira and 
Augie Lamberson Fink.
      She attended McCrory Schools and married Paul R. Perry on May 16, 
1949, who survives. She moved to Rockford, Ill. in 1956 where she worked 
for the Rockford Screw Factory for a few years and was a retired 
homemaker, a Baptist and loved cooking, flowers, family and church.
      Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Kathy Paulette Perry 
Wilkerson and husband James of Newport; one son, Marcus Fink of Newport; 
four sisters, Glendene Cain of Galt, Calif., Juanita Stalling and Hope 
Long, both of McCrory, and Nina Walker of Jonesboro; one brother, Rev. 
George Fink of Vandale; three grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Central Missionary Baptist 
Church in Newport with Rev. Thom Stapleton, pastor of the church, 
officiating. He was assisted by Rev. George Fink. Burial was in Fakes 
Chapel Cemetery near McCrory.
      Pallbearers were Max Long, James Wilkerson, Jr., Jeffrey 
Wilkerson, Marcus Wilkerson, Lester Stallings and Buddy Witherspoon.

A. D. PIERCE

      Mr. A. D. Pierce, 76 of Harrisburg, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 in 
Harrisburg. He was born Sept. 18, 1925 in Ozark, the son of Rufus Pierce 
and Rosie (Castleman) Pierce. He was a retired farmer and a former 
employee of the Poinsett County Road Department. In addition to his 
parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Hazel Pierce; one 
son, Charles Pierce; two brothers, Earnest and Dugen Pierce; and one 
sister, Faye Lawson.
      Survivors include four brothers, Willie Pierce, Wayne Pierce, Olen 
Pierce and G. L. Pierce, all of Wynne; three sons, Allen Pierce of 
Harrisburg, Terry Pierce of Harrisburg and Steve Pierce of Jonesboro; 
two daughters, Patricia Harmon of Harrisburg and Brenda Mahan of 
Harrisburg; 23 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Monday at the Jackson's Harrisburg 
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Frank Hills and Rev. Van Gilbert 
officiating. Interment followed in Bolivar Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Donald Mahan, Jason Harmon, Chad Pierce, DeWayne 
Buckley, Steve Jenkins and Kenneth Bass.

JEWEL EDDIE POUNDERS

      Mr. Jewel Eddie Pounders, 86 of Newport, died Feb. 25 in Newport. 
He was a salesman for L. B. Price Co. and an Army veteran. 
      He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred 
Pounders; one daughter, Jodie Taylor; two brothers, Frank and William 
Pounders; and one sister.
      Survivors include one son, Bubba Pounders of Newport; three 
sisters, Rudine Jones and Carolyn Howard, both of Newport, and Diane and 
husband David Adams of Campbell Station; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-
grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
      Graveside service was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Remmel McCall Cemetery.

MAYBELLE DOROTHY RAY

      Mrs. Maybelle Dorothy Ray, 89 of Trumann, formerly of Harrisburg, 
died Sunday at her residence. She was born Sept. 2, 1912 in St. Louis, 
Mo. the daughter of Eva (Neal) Atchison. She was a retired Dental 
Assistant for Dr. Irwin Gould of Trumann and was a former waitress while 
living in Harrisburg. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. 
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her 
husband, Orvell Monroe Ray, and one son, Franklin Ray.
      Survivors include one son, Dilmon Ray of Cabot; one daughter, 
Geneva Gould of Trumann; five grandchildren, Michele Shepherd, Dana 
Garrett, Jason Gould, Randye Dill Kevin Ray; and five great-
grandchildren, Leilani Brooks, Sam Simmons, Nolan Dill, Jessica Ray and 
Kari Joanna Ray.
      Funeral service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jackson's Harrisburg 
Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tad Rogers officiating. Interment will 
follow in Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery.

CLINT CONRAD SKYRME

      Clint Conrad Skyrme, 89 of Newport, died Feb. 11 in Newport. He 
was a retired truck driver. Mr. Skyrme was preceded in death by his 
parents, John and Cora Roberts Skyrme.
      Survivors include two sons, Bobby and wife Charleen Skyrme of Lake 
Placid, Fla., and Billy and wife Sandra Skyrme of Waterton, Conn.; and 
eight grandchildren.

Chapel with Rodney Alexander officiating. Burial is in Gracelawn 
Cemetery in Tuckerman.

HELEN (WHALEY) SOUTHARD

      Helen (Whaley) Southard, 77 of Idabel, Okla., passed away Feb. 23, 
2002 in Texarkana, Texas. She was born Dec. 3, 1924 in Griffithville the 
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rice.
      She was a homemaker, a member of Central Baptist Church and had 
lived in McCurtain County 20 years. She loved her home and yard.
      She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Janis Lancaster of 
Idabel and Peggy Wilson of Beaumont, Texas; one son, Larry and wife 
Jammie Whaley of Idabel; three brothers, Hollice Rice of St. Louis, Mo., 
Billy Rice and Richard Rice, both of Griffithville; two sisters, 
Kathleen Chapman and Ruby Hall, both of Griffithville; five 
grandchildren, Michael and Gregory Lancaster of Idabel, Van Wilson and 
Sherry Walton of Houston, Texas, and Lea Whaley of Weiner; and six 
great-grandchildren.
      Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brumley-McCurtain Chapel, Idabel, 
with Rev. Elwayne Schaeffer officiating. Burial is 2 p.m. Wednesday at 
Gracelawn Cemetery in Tuckerman with H. L. Crotts officiating.
