KATRINA MARIA TOMLINSON BATA

      Katrina Maria Tomlinson Bata, 29 of Rogers, formerly of Hornlake, 
Miss., died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001 in Memphis, Tenn.  She was born 
Dec. 17, 1972 in Memphis, Tenn. the daughter of James Alan and Mary Lou 
Tomlinson.  She was a homemaker and past Guest Development Supervisor at 
Fitzgerald Casino.  She married John Watson Bata on April 1, 2000, and 
they had recently moved to Rogers.  She was a wonderful cook and had a 
profound love for all animals, especially her four cats.
      She is survived by her spouse; her father and step-mother, James 
Allan and Shirley Tomlinson of Norwood, Ontario, Canada; her mother; and 
her grandfather, Alan Tomlinson of Pensacola, Fla.
      Funeral service was 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jackson's Harrisburg 
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Captain Lovell officiating.  Interment 
followed in Harrisburg Memorial Park Cemetery.

CHEYENNE VICTORIA RYANN CORDELL [photo]

      Cheyenne Victoria Ryann Cordell, 3, died Nov. 24, 2001 at her 
Palmer, Alaska home.  She was born Dec. 20, 1998 in Anchorage.
      Her mother wrote, "She loved everyone and was always playing with 
her baby brother, Kluane.  Cheyenne was the sweetest and brightest 
little girl, and she was the center of my world.  She was the best big 
sister to her little brother, Kluane.  She was so full of love and life.  
She is irreplaceable in our hearts."
      Cheyenne is survived by her mother, Amy Cordell; grandparents, Dan 
and Margie Cordell; uncles and aunts, Jamie Don and Shauna Cordell, Adam 
and Nicole Cordell, Clinton, David Gregory and Crystal Gregory; beloved 
friends and cousins, Alexis, Shauntelle, Emali, Ali Mae and Andre 
Cordell, all of Alaska; two great-grandmothers, Esther Rauch of Little 
Rock and Billie Cordell of Newport; one great-grandfather, Don Fletcher 
of Little Rock; and many extended families in the Lower 48.
      Memorial donations may be sent to the Cheyenne and Kluane Cordell 
Bereavement Fund at First National Bank of Anchorage.


KLUANE DANIEL DEAN CORDELL [photo]

      Kluane Daniel Dean Cordell, 1, died Nov. 24, 2001 at his Palmer, 
Alaska home.  He was born June 1, 2000 in Anchorage.
      His mother wrote, "He loved to follow his big sister around.  
Kluane was so precious and special.  He was so loved, and our loss of 
his life only leaves me to wonder what memories I have missed out on 
with him.  His short time here with us really taught me what true love 
is.  He showed all of us how much he loved us all.  I will miss the 
laughter I always heard from him and his big sister playing together.
      Kluane is survived by his mother, Amy Cordell; his grandparents, 
Dan and Margie Cordell; uncles and aunts, Jamie and Shauna Cordell, Adam 
and Nicole Cordell, Clinton, David Gregory and Crystal Gregory; beloved 
friends and cousins, Alexis, Shauntelle, Emali, Ali Mae and Andre 
Cordell, all of Alaska; two great-grandmothers, Esther Rauch of Little 
Rock and Billie Cordell of Newport; one great-grandfather, Don Fletcher 
of Little Rock; and many extended families in the Lower 48.

ANNA MAE 'SHUG' HAMPTON

      Mrs. Anna Mae "Shug" Hampton, 93 of Newport, died Saturday, Dec. 
29, 2001 in Newport.  She was born Jan. 23, 1908 in Oil Trough the 
daughter of Kelley Monroe and Bessie Lenora (Roberson) Crabtree.
      Mrs. Hampton was a homemaker.  She was a member of the First Free 
Will Baptist Church and was active in her Sunday School Class.  She 
enjoyed canning and felt if God could grow it, it was up to her to 
preserve it.  She enjoyed cooking and was especially known for her fried 
pies.  Mrs. Hampton was known as the fried pie maker of the church.  She 
also enjoyed quilting and gardening, and was still gardening at the age 
of 93.
      She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Johnny Lewis 
Hampton on May 23, 1984; two sons, Kenneth Wayne Hampton in October 1967 
and Bobby Lee Hampton in December 1993; four brothers, Raymond Crabtree, 
K. M. Crabtree, Arvil Crabtree and Leon Crabtree; two sisters, Betty 
Crabtree and Cleo Barrett; and a great-grandson, Frankie Hampton in 
October 2001.
      Mrs. Hampton is survived by three sons, Billy Max Hampton and 
Charles Franklin Hampton, both of Greers Ferry, and John W. Hampton of 
Jonesboro; one daughter, Mary Jo Shaw of Union Hill; two sisters, Dolly 
Spence of Oil Trough and Gladys Peoples of Barstow, Calif.; 22 
grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren and five great-great-
grandchildren.
      Funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel with Rev. Joe Buttegen and Rev. Brant Atkinson officiating.  
Interment is in Maple Springs Cemetery in Oil Trough.
      Pallbearers are Jerry Shaw, Larry Shaw, Bill Shaw, Dennis Shaw, 
Johnny Hampton, Johnie Hampton, Gary Hampton, Charles Hampton and 
Michael Hampton.

SHIRLEY KOCHER

      Mrs. Shirley Kocher, 61 of Harrisburg, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001 
at Regional Medical Center of NEA.  She was born Feb. 28, 1940 in 
Greenfield the daughter of Walter Scoggin and Nedra (Jones) Scoggin.  
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Waldenburg where she was 
actively involved with Lutheran Braille Workers and was a sustaining 
member of the Lydia Society.  She was a homemaker and a loving mother 
and wife.
      She is survived by her spouse, Tommy Kocher of the home; one 
sister, Bonnie Blair of Germantown, Tenn.; one son, Harold L. Kocher, 
Jr. of Harrisburg; one daughter, Lisa Wixson of Collierville, Tenn.; two 
grandchildren, Bryan Luke Wixson and Kye Emma Kocher.
      Funeral service was 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Zion Lutheran Church 
in Waldenburg with Rev. Paul Leigeber officiating.  Interment followed 
in Waldenburg Cemetery.

BILL NELSON

      Mr. Bill Nelson, 69 of Newport, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001 in 
Little Rock.  He was a retired manager for Arkla Gas, retired volunteer 
fireman, 32 degree Mason, Jackson County Lodge #191, an employee of 
Arkla Gas for 27 years, a member of the Fire Pension Board, on the 
Newport City Council for eight years and the City Service Commission for 
eight years.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Vic Nelson and Lucenthia 
Corter, and one grandchild, Marcus Nelson.
      Survivors include his wife, Norma Nelson of Newport; one son, Mark 
Nelson of Judsonia; one daughter, Billie Jean Rice of Newport; one 
brother, Dean Nelson of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Rita Bullard and 
Dorothy Lipscomb, both of Newport, and Virginia Moody of Searcy; three 
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
      Graveside service was 10 a.m. Saturday at Remmel McCall Cemetery 
in Remmel Community, Newport.
      Pallbearers were Kaneaster Hodges, Robert Shannon, Jerry Mann, 
Larry Dulaney, Billy Hall and David Steward.  Honorary pallbearers were 
Ed Michael, Paul Tinsley, Sonny Bullard, Tommy Clark, Wayne Beard, Doug 
Cash, Albert Qualls, Norman Harkey, Jim Henderson, Ed Wherry, C. C. 
Hulett and Mike Jones.

BUDDY OWENS

      Mr. Buddy Owens, 69 of Harrisburg, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001 in 
Harrisburg.  He was born Sept. 15, 1932 in Cherry Valley the son of the 
late Harry Owens and Zuma (Nixon) Owens.  He was a retired farmer and 
carpenter.
      Mr. Owens is survived by his spouse, Arva Owens of Harrisburg; one 
sister, Mildred Mitcherson of Edgemont; one son, Danny Owens of Lompoe, 
Calif.; one daughter, Sandy Wigginton of Harrisburg; six grandchildren, 
Wren Wigginton, Kyle Wigginton, Blake Owens, Tish Owens, Dax Owens, and 
Dana Owens.
      Graveside service was 2 p.m. Sunday at the Harrisburg Memorial 
Park Cemetery with Rev. Larry White officiating.
      Pallbearers were Larry Cooper, Bill Rea, DeWayne McArthur, Ricky 
Faulkner, Mike Hamrick and Clark King.

JAMES H. RAMSEY

      Mr. James H. "Slab" Ramsey, 72 of Weiner, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 
2001 in Waldenburg.  He was born May 2, 1929 in Weiner the son of 
Charles W. and Hattie (Moore) Ramsey.
      Mr. Ramsey was a self-employed heavy equipment operator and was a 
U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean War.  He enjoyed hunting, 
fishing and telling stories.
      Mr. Ramsey was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie Ramsey 
and R. C. Ramsey, and two sisters, Blanche Bohnam and Wilton Bates.
      He is survived by one son, James Bryan Ramsey of Fort Smith; two 
daughter, Karen Hardy of Little Rock and Sherri Fly of Fort Smith; one 
brother, C. W. Ramsey of Weiner; and two sisters, Sylvia Parker of 
Newport and Evalee Rudd of Weiner.
      Graveside service was 2 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Cemetery in 
Weiner with Mr. Sherman Ivy officiating.
      Pallbearers were Raymond McIllwain, Delmar McIllwain, Robbie 
Rouse, Joe Sitcer, Ricky Ramsey and Billy Ramsey.

ENOLA (HALE) ROBINETTE

      Mrs. Enola (Hale) Robinette, 88 of Newport, died Friday, Dec. 28, 
2001 in Newport.  She was born July 30, 1913 in Grand Glaize the 
daughter of Samuel Sylvester and Ida Belle (O'Neal) Hale.
      Mrs. Robinette was a homemaker and a member of the Airbase Church 
of Christ.  She enjoyed gardening and writing; but above all, she 
enjoyed walking.  Until the age of 82, she walked 15 miles a day.
      Mrs. Robinette was preceded in death by her husband, Edward 
Benjamin Robinette; and three brothers, Eldridge Eugene Hale, Sydrick 
Lucien Hale and John Thomas Hale.
      She is survived by one daughter, Jean Doris Hicks of Newport; one 
brother, Joyce Marion Hale of Ukiah, Calif.; two sisters, Viola Peebles 
of Newport and Nancy Jackson of Arkadelphia; two grandchildren, Barbara 
Ann Chaplain and Craig Owen Hicks; and one great-grandchild, James Henry 
Chaplain.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Monday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel with Mr. Gary Lawson officiating.  Interment was in 
Coffeyville Cemetery.

BERT ROWLAND, JR.

      Mr. Bert Rowland, Jr., 57 of Newport, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001 
in Little Rock.  He was a Methodist.
      He is survived by Laverne Rowland Binkley, Lindsey P. Rowland of 
Newport, Regina McGill of Havelock, N.C., Mae Alice Hardaway of Augusta, 
Ruthann Hardaway of Searcy, Kimberly Rowland of Ann Arbor, Mich., and 
step-son Dennis P. Binkley of Newport.
      Funeral service was 1 p.m. Monday at St. Paul A.M.E. Church with 
James Logan Morgan officiating.  Interment was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were John L. Peel, Dennis Binkley, Robert Hardaway, 
Richard Owens, Greg McGill and Charles Woodruff.

VELMA WEAVER

      Mrs. Velma Weaver, 88 of Weiner, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 in 
Newport.  She was born March 8, 1913 in Balch the daughter of Robert W. 
and Nancy Eller (Ford) Taylor.
      Mrs. Weaver was a homemaker and a member of the Midway Church of 
Christ.  She enjoyed gardening, fishing and raising chickens and 
rabbits.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Weaver; five 
brothers, Marvin Taylor, Dewey Taylor, Juel Taylor, Willis Taylor and 
Elmer Taylor; four sisters, Willie Taylor Norton, Carlie Taylor Roberts, 
Effie Williams and Jeffie Jones.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Monday at the Midway Church of Christ 
with Mr. Llano Robinson and Mr. Paul Evins officiating.  Interment was 
in Balch-Johnson Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Keith Davis, Willie Cox, Leland Self, Dean 
Phillips, Sr., Don Robinson and Jimmy Phillips.  Honorary pallbearers 
were Cleo Edwards, J. T. Reddell, David Howard and Don Combs.

RUTH DENNON WILSON

      Mrs. Ruth Dennon Wilson, 90 of Harrisburg, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 
2001 in Jonesboro.  She was born Oct. 1, 1911 in Weiner, the daughter of 
Charles and Viola Wharton Dennon.  She was a homemaker and a member of 
the Greenfield Baptist Church for 59 years where she taught Sunday 
School for many of those years.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her 
husband, Willard Carrol Wilson; two sisters; three brothers; one 
grandson, Ryan Verser McKinney; and one granddaughter, Cheri Renee 
Cooper.
      She is survived by three daughters, Evelyn Griffin, Lois Johns and 
Sue Cooper, all of Harrisburg; seven grandchildren, Karen McKinney 
Johnson, Gayle McKinney Wixson, David Johns, Bud Johns, Perry Ray 
Cooper, Willard Wilson Cooper and Mickey Todd Cooper; and 16 great-
grandchildren.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Saturday at the Jackson's Harrisburg 
Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Danny Veteto, Bro. Harrison Johns, Bro. 
Bobby Crabb and Bro. Captain Lovell officiating.  Interment followed in 
Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were grandsons David Johns, Bud Johns, Perry Cooper, 
Wilson Cooper, Micky Cooper, Jim Johnson and Terry Wilson.  Honorary 
pallbearers were Jack Blair, Don Lee, Wayne King, Randy Dillinger, Rick 
Huffman, and members of her Ladies Sunday School Class.
      Memorials may be made to the Greenfield Baptist Church.

JEWEL (SCHULTZ) CRAIG WRAY

      Mrs. Jewel (Schultz) Craig Wray, 88 of Sacramento, Calif., 
formerly of Newark, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 in Newport.  She was 
born March 9, 1913 in Mt. Olive the daughter of Rev. J. M. and Nora 
(Turner) Schultz.
      For many years Mrs. Wray and her first husband, the late Oscar F. 
Craig, Jr., were co-owners of the Royal Theater in Newark.  She lived 
for 42 years in Sacramento where she retired from the Del Paco Heights 
Pharmacy.  Mrs. Wray was a member of the Church of Christ.
      She was preceded in death by her first husband, Oscar F. Craig, 
Jr.; her second husband, Charles Wray; her parents; one brother, Farrell 
Schultz; and one son, James Richard Craig.
      Mrs. Wray is survived by one son, David Craig of Newark; one 
brother, Joe Schultz of California; three grandchildren, James Richard 
Craig, Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif., Frank Craig of Verdi, Nev. and Marla 
Craig of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one niece, Carolyn Keeble of Houston, 
Texas.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Monday at Jackson's Newark Funeral Home 
Chapel with Mr. Mark Richardson officiating.  Interment was in Blue 
Springs Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Hale Wherry, John Sturdivant, Jr., Eulo Nichols, 
Enos Nichols, Jack Griffin and Tommy Howell.

BILLY ALLEN

      Billy Allen, 75 of Oil Trough, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001 in 
Searcy. 
      He was preceded in death by his wife, May Allen; his parents, 
William Luther Allen and Mary Bell Barber; and two brothers, Johnny 
Truman Allen and Gerald Wayne Allen.
      Survivors include one step-son, Larry Dale McDaniels of Newark; 
one brother, Finis Allen of Oil Trough; one grandchild and one great-
grandchild.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Thursday at White River Baptist Church 
with burial in Maple Springs Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were David Pankey, Cornelius Burrow, Winfred 
Smotherman, Johnny Mack Barber, Stanley Barber and Laddie Barber. 
Honorary pallbearers were the men of the White River Baptist Church.

ETHEL MAE KENSINGER

      Ethel Mae Kensinger, 91 of Little Rock, passed away Dec. 31, 2001. 
She was a longtime member of First Gospel Church.
      Ethel was the widow of Fred Kensinger and was preceded in death by 
two sons, David Kensinger and Lawrence Ivie.
      She is survived by one daughter, Peggy Dodge and her husband, Mike 
of Little Rock; one son, Alf Ivie and his wife, Dorothy of Bradford; 
seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-
grandchildren; four sisters, Beatrice Block, Irene Ballew, Nita McKim 
and Nora Scarintino; one brother, R.D. Shelley; and several nieces and 
nephews.
      Ethel was a loving mother and grandmother and was a friend to all. 
She will be greatly missed.
      Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Gospel Church, 
8101 Asher Ave. in Little Rock, with Rev. Ray Leniger and Rev. Glenn 
Winingar officiating.  Graveside service will be 2 p.m. in Walnut Grove 
Cemetery in Newport.  Visitation is Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with 
the family receiving guests from 6-8 p.m. at Huson Funeral Home, 6400 
Mabelvale Pike, Little Rock.


MARGARET 'ELIZABETH' CALDWELL NEWTON

      Margaret "Elizabeth" Caldwell Newton of Searcy, formerly of 
Newport, departed this life on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001 at the age of 75. 
Mrs. Newton was born Sept. 20, 1926 in Tuckerman to Andy Caldwell and 
Arbell Caldwell Carpenter. 
      She was a former member of the Newport Ladies Auxiliary to the 
V.F.W., a member of the Olyphant Church of Christ and a homemaker. 
      Mrs. Newton was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 
52 years, Aaron E. "Gene" Newton; and one grandson, Christopher Garrett 
Morrow.
      Elizabeth is survived by her four children, sons Charles, Andy and 
Robert, all of Searcy; and one daughter, Julia Newton Morrow of Tulsa, 
Okla.; one brother; five sisters; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-
grandchildren.
      A memorial service was held at the Olyphant Church of Christ on 
Dec. 30, 2001 at 1 p.m. Her ashes and her husband's ashes were laid to 
rest together in a single grave at Coffeyville Cemetery.

BETTY LOU WILLARD PIERCE

      Mrs. Betty Lou Willard Pierce, 53 of Cherry Valley, died Sunday, 
Dec. 30, 2001 at her residence in Cherry Valley. 
      Mrs. Pierce was a former nurse's aide at Wynwood Nursing Center 
and also was employed in the housekeeping department at Crestpark 
Nursing Home in Wynne for a number of years before retiring because of 
poor health. She was a member of the Cherry Valley Church of God and was 
married Oct. 23, 1968 of Mr. Danny Pierce, who survives. 
      Mrs. Pierce was born Jan. 13, 1948 in Newport the daughter of 
Willine Lively Willard and the late Bradford Lee Willard. In earlier 
years, she worked at the Hodges Nursery in Cherry Valley and was a 
former resident of Newport and Bakersfield, Calif. before moving to 
Cherry Valley, where she resided for most of her life. She enjoyed 
fishing, gardening and decorating her home.
      She is survived by three sons, Donald Mahan of Harrisburg, Ronald 
Mahan of Cherry Valley and Danny Pierce, Jr. of Harrisburg; six sisters, 
Adaline Wilson of Pontiac, Mich., Barbara Williams of Newport, Mary 
Greene of Belzoni, Miss., Carol Stutter of Newport, Brenda Bruce of 
Belzoni, Miss., and Debra Mitchell of Newport; five brothers, Bradford 
Willard of Rolling Fork, Miss., James Willard of Belzoni, Miss., Boyce 
Willard of Parham, Miss., Michael Willard of Newport and Gary Willard of 
Belzoni, Miss.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Wednesday at Thompson-Wilson Funeral 
Home Chapel in Wynne with Rev. Greg Crumley, pastor of the Cherry Valley 
Church of God, officiating. Burial was in Vanndale Cemetery in Vanndale.
      The family requests that memorials be made to the Cherry Valley 
Baptist Church.

LINDA FAY SITZ

      Linda Fay Sitz, 50 of Wynne, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001 in 
Jonesboro. She was born Oct. 1, 1951 in Cherry Valley. 
      She graduated from Wynne High School, the University of Central 
Arkansas in Conway and then received two Master's Degrees from Arkansas 
State University in Jonesboro. She was a high school English teacher in 
the Swifton Public Schools for 26 years, and before that she taught for 
two years in Carthage. She was a member of the American Education 
Association; the Arkansas Classroom of Teachers of Language, Arts and

in Wynne. Burial was in Akin Cemetery near Vanndale with Rev. Tim Watson

MRS. TRAYWICK

      Mrs. Traywick was born May 4, 1963 in Anadarko to Charles and 
Marilyn (Farmer) Shannon and passed from this life Saturday, Dec. 29, 
2001 at her home.  She was preceded in death by her parents.
      She is survived by her hsuband, Jackie Traywick of Anadarko; her 
daughter, Shannon Patterson of Anadarko; her brothers, Robert Shannon of 
Tuckerman, Michael Shannon of Newport and Charles R. (Bob) Shannon of 
Indio, Calif.; her sisters, Judy McLaughlin of San Diego, Calif. and 
Lilly McHenry of Anaheim Hills, Calif.; her step-mother, Lucille Shannon 
of Newport; her step-daughters, Cindy Shaffer and Mandy Traywick of 
Anadarko and Jackie Dawn Traywick of Alabama; a great-uncle, Maurice 
Nixon of Anadarko; her former husband, Ronnie Patterson of Anadarko; 
several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many loving friends.
      Burial was in Memory Lane Cemetery by Stevenson Funeral Home.


NANCY ELLEN YAUCH

      Nancy Ellen Yauch, age 66 of Batesville, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 
2001 at her home. She was born March 24, 1935 at Kewanee, Ill. to Julius 
and Ellen Anderson Beuster. She was a homemaker and a member of the Hope 
Lutheran Church of Batesville, worked as Hope Lutheran Church secretary 
for many years and also served as treasurer.
      She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Ron 
Beuster.
      Survivors include her husband, William R. Yauch of the home; two 
sons, William Kurt Yauch of Harrison and James Edward Yauch of 
Carrollton, Texas; two daughters, Janet Kay Yauch of Houston, Texas and 
Julie Ann Yauch of Batesville; one brother, John Beuster of Rockford, 
Ill.; and six grandchildren, Chris Yauch of Harrison, Taylor Yauch, 
Jordan Yauch and Garrett Yauch, all of Carrollton, Texas, and Andrew 
Yauch and Ellen Yauch, both of Batesville; several nieces, nephews and a 
host of other relatives and friends.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Hope Lutheran Church 
in Batesville with Pastor Paul Mehl officiating. Burial followed at the 
Roselawn Cemetery in Batesville.

REV. OTIS L. LUFF

      Rev. Otis L. Luff, 78 of Harrisburg, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002 in 
Jonesboro. He was born Dec. 11, 1923 in Caraway the son of H.L. Luff and 
Alice (Thompson) Luff.  He was a carpenter and the founder and pastor of 
the Harrisburg Full Gospel Church. He was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran. 
      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five 
brothers and five sisters.
      Survivors include his wife, Sandra (Evans) Luff of the home; six 
sons, Virgil Luff, Kenneth Luff, Howard Luff and Gary Luff, all of 
Caraway, Jeremy Luff and Josh Luff, both of Harrisburg; two daughters, 
Judy Endicott of Caraway and Allison Luff of Harrisburg; seven 
grandchildren, Randy Luff, Dena Sparkman, Ken Luff, Kristin Johnson, 
Misty Floyde, Allen Luff and Trevor Endicott; and four great-
grandchildren, Haley, Cain, Desiree and Hayley.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Sunday at the Jackson's Harrisburg 
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Glenda Johnson and Rev. Ron Martin 
officiating.  Interment followed in Philadelphia Cemetery near 
Jonesboro, with graveside military honors.

      Mrs. Ruby Rudick Matlock, age 82, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002 in 
Searcy.  She was born in Big Flats on Nov. 21, 1919 and was a member of 
Grace Baptist Church in Augusta.  She loved sewing, quilting, knitting, 
crossword puzzles, Bingo, church and family. 
      Survivors include one daughter, Sally Ann Hudson of Ft. Worth, 
Texas; and two sons, Gilbert Matlock of Forrest City and Dolen Matlock 
of Conway. 
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Monday at Grace Baptist Church in 
Augusta with Rev. Steven Beavers, pastor, officiating. Burial was in 
Cotton Plant Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Frank Baskins, Gilbert Matlock, Jr., Jason 
Matlock, Mark O'Shields, Tommy O'Shields, II and Kenny Simons.

      Mr. Bert Rowland, Jr. of Newport was born Aug. 17, 1944 in Jackson 
County the son of the late Bert Rowland, Sr. and Emma Slayton Rowland.
      He was a retired farmer and had been associated with the Holden-
Conner Farm in Jackson County.
      Mr. Bert Rowland, Jr. departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 27, 
2001 in Little Rock.
      He leaves to cherish his memory six daughters, Laverne Binkley 
Rowland and Lindsey P. Rowland of Newport, Regina McGill (Greg) of 
Havelock, N.C., Mae Alice Hardaway of Augusta, Ruth Ann Hardaway of 
Searcy, Kimberly Rowland of Ann Arbor, Mich.; one step-son, Dennis P. 
Binkley of Newport; one brother, Charles Rowland (Verna) of Newport; two 
sisters, Janice Binkley (Lee) of Newport and Ruby Cloud (Kenneth) of

MAXINE HARDIN

      Mrs. Maxine Hardin, 94 of Milford, Ohio, formerly of Tupelo, died 
Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002 in Ohio. She was born Aug. 31, 1907 in Chismville 
the daughter of Jesse and Rena (Burton) Hutchens. She was a homemaker 
and a member of the Church of Christ.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester A. Hardin; and 
two sisters, Annie Nance and Byrd Gardner.
      Mrs. Hardin is survived by one son, Chester Lynn Hardin of North 
Little Rock; two daughters, Peggy Jean Jones of Loveland, Ohio and 
Margaret Ann Ure of Santa Rosa, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-
grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

      Mr. Vardimon Miller, 75 of Newport, died Jan. 7, 2002 at his home. 
He was a retired farm laborer and a Baptist.

      Martin Steward, 77 of Macks Community, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002 
in Newport. He was a World War II veteran, and a member of the V.F.W.

      Mr. Dickey Ballard, 70 of Oil Trough, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 
in Newport. He was a self-employed journeyman carpenter, a member of the 
Oil Trough Church of Christ, and an Army veteran of the Korean War. 
      Mr. Ballard was preceded in death by his parents, George and Clara

      She was a homemaker and attended the Olyphant Church of Christ and 
enjoyed sewing, quilting and embroidering.
      Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Cook.

Ray Cook of Oil Trough; one brother, Jimmy Meachum of Cabot; one sister,

grandchildren.

JERRY WAYNE GOZA

      Mr. Jerry Wayne Goza, 56 of Swifton, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 in 
Newport. He was born in Swifton on Dec. 9, 1945 the son of Arkey and 
Jessie (Wallin) Goza. 
      He was employed by Norandal as a machinist and was a member of the 
Swifton Church of Christ. Mr. Goza enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to 
ball games.
      Mr. Goza was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, 
Carol Goza.
      He is survived by his wife, Elaine (Wheeler) Goza of Swifton; one 
son, Tim Goza and wife Merry of Swifton; one daughter, Tammy Shelton and 
husband Tim of Swifton; two brothers, Charles Goza of Cabot and Sam Goza 
of Possum Grape; two sisters, Bernice Henderson of Swifton and Loran 
Arnold of Swifton; six grandchildren, Cassie Shelton, Bryce Shelton, 
Jordan Shelton, Zach Goza, Brianne Goza and Meagan Goza; and two God-

GERALD 'PAT' HAGLER

      Mr. Gerald "Pat" Hagler, 76 of McCrory, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 
in Searcy. He was born Sept. 18, 1925 in McCrory the son of the late 
George Wilson Hagler and Olive Ross Hagler. 
      He was a graduate of McCrory High School (1944) and attended the 
University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He was a member of the Church of 
Christ, American Legion, and was a cub scout leader and baseball 
commissioner in McCrory. He loved hunting, fishing, music and family.
      Mr. Hagler is survived by his wife, Bonnie Hagler of McCrory; 
three sons, Charles Wilson Hagler of DeQueen, Bobby Joe Hagler of 
McCrory and James Lynn Hagler of Jonesboro; two sisters, Helen Hagler 
Holder of Little Rock and Barbara Ann Green of Angleton, Texas; one 
brother, Charles Ross Hagler of Arlington, Texas; and one grandson, 
James Matthew Hagler.

      Mrs. T. Louise Hagood, 92 of Brownsburg, Ind., formerly of 
Swifton, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 in Indiana. She was born at Creswell 
on Jan. 15, 1909 the daughter of H. T. and Beatrice (Evans) Watson.
      Mrs. Hagood was a homemaker and retired from U.S. F&G Insurance in 
1974. She was a member of the Swifton Baptist Church and enjoyed 
gardening, sewing and her grandchildren.
      Mrs. Hagood was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Hagood, 
and one son, James Hagood.
      She is survived by two daughters, Sue Matthews Barfield of 
Brownsburg, Ind. and Wanda Sawyer of Memphis, Tenn.; one sister, 
Katherine Dudley of Newport; four grandchildren, Timothy Matthews, Brett 
Cazzell, Renata Zimmerman and Cheri Sawyer; eight great-grandchildren 
and one brother-in-law, Noel Hagood of Swifton.

      Higginbottom, William Henry "Fee Faw" was born June 7, 1935 in 
Tuckerman.  He passed away Nov. 12, 2001 in Dallas, Texas as a result of 
complications from Alzheimer's disease.
      He is survived by his children, Kathy Cruz, James Higginbottom, 
Shari Higginbottom and Laura Nelson; grandchildren, Aaron Cruz, Lance

      James Lesley, 68 of Rector, formerly of Harrisburg, died Saturday, 
Jan. 12, 2002 in Paragould. He was born Oct. 16, 1933 in Harrisburg to 
the late Lovett Abner and Nannie (Deckelman) Lesley. He was a retired 
auto body repairman and of the Pentecostal belief. He was a Korean Air 
Force veteran.
      Mr. Lesley was preceded in death by his parents.

Faye Chamblis of Jonesboro; two brothers, Billy Harold Lesley of Frost 
Proof, Fla. and Joe Von Lesley of Jonesboro; four sons, David Lesley of

and George L. Smith of Paragould; two daughters, Margarett Jones of

RALPH E. MADDEN

      Mr. Ralph E. Madden, 62 of Cow Lake Community, Beedeville, died 
Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 at his home in Beedeville. He was born Jan. 1, 
1940 in Cow Lake Community the son of Roy E. and Lola Iris (McFadden) 
Madden.
      Mr. Madden attended Harding College for one year before returning 
to Beedeville to farm with his family. He was a self-employed farmer and 
farmed along side his brothers all of his life. He loved the outdoors 
and was an avid duck and coon hunter.
      He was a member of the Beedeville Church of Christ where he served 
as a deacon and taught Sunday School for many years. Mr. Madden was a 
past member of the uncle. His greatest joy was spending time with his 
grandchildren. He loved children and children loved him. He touched many 
lives with his kind ways and strong spirit. He lived his life daily for 
God, family, friends and work.
      He was preceded in death by his father, Roy E. Madden on June 3, 
1987; his mother, Lola Iris (McFadden) Madden on March 18, 1984; three 
brothers, Dale Madden, Sr. on March 6, 2000, Joe E. Madden, Sr. on Sept. 
29, 1995 and Harold Alton Madden, Sr. on Nov. 29, 1968; two sisters, 
Etta Reid on Sept. 5, 1990 and Royslen Madden on June 24, 1934; and one 
nephew, Roy Thomas on Sept. 24, 1992.
      Mr. Madden is survived by his wife of 42 years, Betty L. (Ireland) 
Madden of Cow Lake Community, Beedeville; his children, Tony and Karen 
Madden of Cow Lake Community, and Tara (Madden) and Tim London of 
Searcy; three grandchildren, Brad London and Paige London, both of 
Searcy, and Ashton Madden of Cow Lake Community; two foster daughters, 
Patty Ireland and Penny Ireland of Cow Lake Community; four brothers, 
Stanley Madden of Beedeville, Kenneth Madden of Beedeville, Norman 
Madden of Newport and Hervey Madden of Beedeville; and one sister, 
Elaine Thomas of Beedeville.

RAYBURN GRIFFIN SMITH

      Mr. Rayburn Griffin Smith, 88 of Harrisburg, died Friday, Jan. 11, 
2002 in Jonesboro. He wa born in Harrisburg on April 21, 1913 to the 
late U.L. and Mattie Lou (Griffin) Smith. 
      He graduated from Henderson State University. He taught public 
schools, was a high school football coach and retired as postmaster for 
Harrisburg Post Office. He was in the Harrisburg Rotary Club, American 
Legion, and had served on the Harrisburg City Council. He was a member 
of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, a WWII Navy 
veteran, and a retired Army Reserve officer in Jonesbor. He helped 
establish the Harrisburg National Guard Unite. He was a member of the 
Harrisburg First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. 
      Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Manette (Glenn) 
Smith; one son, Mel Smith; and his parents.
      Survivors include one son, Glenn Smith of Jonesboro; one daughter, 
Barbara Winters of Harrisburg; two grandchildren, Larry Winters, Jr. and 
Lori Winters; and one great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Isabel Winters.
      Graveside service was 2 p.m. Monday at Harrisburg Memorial Park 
Cemetery with Rev. Tom Sullinger officiating.

MRS. FAY LONG

      Mrs. Fay Long, 68 of Tuckerman, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002 in 
Jonesboro. She was born Nov. 13, 1933 in Jonesboro the daughter of 
William Thomas and Jessie Irene (Simmons) Christian.
      Mrs. Long was a 1951 graduate of the Valley View High School. She 
graduated from Business College in Jonesboro in 1952. Mrs. Long worked 
as a line person at Frolic Shoe Factory for 10 years and work for Jim 
McDaniel as a secretary assistant for two years. She was a member of the 
First Baptist Church in Tuckerman. Mrs. Long deoted her life to her 
family. She most enjoyed her grandchildren and loved to shop for them.
      Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her parents, William Thomas and 
Jessie Irene (Simmons) Christian, and one grandson, Gregory Lavern Long 
on Sept. 4, 1988.
      She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Lavern Long of 
Tuckerman; her children, Gregory Thomas Long and wife, Jeannie Lynn of 
Tuckerman and Cathy Lynn Harris and husband, Billy J. of Tuckerman; one 
brother, Ralph Christian of Jonesboro; three grandchildren, Brittany 
Elizabeth Harris, Michael Thomas Long and Haley Lynn Long; and a very 
special friend, Betty Riley of Tuckerman.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel with Bro. Lannie Younger officiating. Interment followed in 
Gracelawn Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Bo Riley, Charley Churchman, Afton Eades, Joey 
Fortenberry, Kenny Bowen and Joe Christian. Honorary pallbearers were

FRANCES LUCILLE ARNOLD

      Mrs. Frances Lucille Arnold, 48 of Newark, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 
2002 in Little Rock. She was born in West Helena on Oct. 15, 1953 the 
daughter of James Thompson and Mary Frances (Oxner) Thompson.
      She was a housewife and a member of the Newark Southern Baptist 
Church. Mrs. Arnold enjoyed crocheting, Bingo and taking care of her 
children.
      Mrs. Arnold was preceded in death by her father, James Thompson; 
her mother, Mary Frances (Oxner) Long; and her step-father, Craker 
Taylor.
      She is survived by her husband, Alvin Wayne Arnold of Newark; two 
sons, Billy Bruce Littleton of Southside and Bobby Joe Littleton of 
Newark; two brothers, Roger Thompson of Jonesboro and J.R. Broadway of 
Jonesboro; one sister, Mary Ann Boals of West Helena; and two 
grandchildren, Dalton Drake Littleton of Southside and Leandra Brynn 
Littleton of Southside.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Monday at the Southern Baptist Church 
in Newark. Committal service was 2 p.m. at Odd Fellows Cemetery in 
Helena.

ALICE B. JOHNSON

      Alice B. Johnson, 34 of Alexander, formerly of Tuckerman, departed 
this life on Jan. 18, 2002 in a traffic accident. She was born June 24, 
1967 to the late W. L. "Tiny" Brock and Georgia M. Brock of Tuckerman. 
She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Robert Brock. Alice was 
employed as a nurse at Bryant Regional Nursing Center. She was a 
dedicated nurse and a loving mother to four children.
      She is survived by her fiance, Terry Thomas; four children, Marc 
Johnson (15), Megan Johnson (12), Christopher Thomas (4) and Logan 
Thomas (3), all of Alexander; four sisters, Sharon Beasley of Cotton 
Plant, Brenda Turner of Mountain Home, Martha Pickens of Middlefield, 
Conn., and Carla Newton of Pleasant Plains; and one brother, Lewis Brock 
of Casper, Wyo.
      Services are 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Celebration Christian 
Fellowship Church, 1514 Market Square, with Pastor Tim Jackson 
officiating. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Dowells Chapel Cemetery, 
Tuckerman.

WILLIAM EDWARD LINGO

      Mr. William Edward Lingo, 65 of Swifton, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 
2002 in Newport. He was born April 9, 1936 in Lynn the son of William 
Robert and Beulah Agnes (Duncan) Lingo.
      For 19 years, Mr. Lingo was employed by Dealers Transport before 
moving back to Swifton. He was a charter member of the Swifton 
Pentecostal Church of God, where he served as a Deacon. Mr. Lingo was a 
U.S. Army veteran and served during the Berlin Crisis.
      He was preceded in death by one son, Eddie Dwayne Lingo on Sept. 
5, 1980; and one brother, Joe Dan Lingo on Sept. 24, 1988.
      Mr. Lingo is survived by his wife, Lois (Belding) Lingo of 
Swifton; one daughter, Cynthia Lynn (Lingo) Mitts of Swifton; two step-
sons, Lawrence William Benson, Jr. of Conway and Ricky Lynn Benson of 
Cherry Valley; two brothers, James Thomas Lingo of Hensley and William 
Robert Lingo of Independence, Mo.; three sisters, Beulah Juanita (Lingo) 
Crays, Vanita Bell (Lingo) Slagley and Frances Lucille (Lingo) Decker, 
all of Swifton; five grandchildren, Chandra Nicole Mitts and Payton 
Lawson Mitts, both of Swifton, Matt Benson and Meagan Benson, both of 
Conway, and Lake Benson of Cherry Valley.

WILLIAM NELSON SHELTON

      Mr. William Nelson Shelton, 94 of Newport, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 
2002 in Newport. He was born Feb. 7, 1907 in Cardwell, Mo. He was a 
retired construction worker and a member of the Pentecostal Church.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl May (Ward) Shelton on 
Sept. 2, 1993; two sons, Cecil Marion Shelton and James Paul Shelton; 
three daughters, Wanda Lee Shelton, Lula Bell Shelton and Velma Louise 
DePriest; his father, Charles Marion Shelton; one brother, Thomas 
Shelton; two sisters, Eva May Shelton and Ruby Osborne.
      Mr. Shelton is survived by three sons, Tommy Joe Shelton of Swartz 
Creek, Mich.; one daughter, Carine Hawks of Bald Knob; 10 grandchildren 
and 15 great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel. Interment was in Gracelawn Cemetery in Tuckerman.

RANSOM WOODROW SMITH [photo]

      Ransom Woodrow Smith of Newport departed this life on Jan. 18, 
2002 at the age of 88.
      He was born in Poughkeepsie, Sept. 16, 1913, the eldest son of 
Allen and Ada Smith. He married Theda Hulett on Dec. 26, 1939.
      He attended Arkansas State University and began his professional 
career as a school teacher and coach. He later took a job in Searcy 
working for Farmers Home Administration. After serving in the U.S. Navy 
during World War II, he moved his family to Newport in 1947. Later he 
accepted a position with Merchants and Planters Bank in Newport and 
became a vice president before retiring in 1981.
      Ransom was a member of the Holden Avenue Church of Christ, having 
been an elder in that congregation for over 40 years. He was very active 
in his community, serving on the Newport School Board, the Chamber of 
Commerce, the American Legion Baseball Commission, and Harding 
University's Presidents Council. He was a lifelong Kiwanian, having 
received the Tablet of Honor Award, and was a state officer of AARP.
      He was an avid sportsman and competitor. He enjoyed playing golf 
and watching and listening to ballgames. He had been known to watch one 
ballgame while listening to another. His greatest passion and love was 
his family. He enjoyed nothing more in his life than watching his sons, 
daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participate in sports.
      Ransom loved life and lived it to the fullest, always giving 100 
percent of himself and sharing his positive attitude with everyone with 
whom he came in contact. His children say he was the strongest man 
mentally and physically they have ever known. Because of his quiet 
strength, he was known to family and friends as "Bear."
      Ransom is survived by his wife of 62 years, Theda (Hulett) Smith; 
three sons, Dr. Steve Smith of Searcy, Dr. Ronny Smith of Blytheville 
and Dr. Joe David Smith of Newport; and a daughter, Mary Smith of 
Newport; seven grandchildren, Dr. Ron Smith of Memphis, Tenn., Jill 
Davis of Searcy, Ferrell Marrs of Memphis, Tenn., Shannon Whitehead of 
Franklin, Tenn., Ransom S. Smith of Fayetteville, Hunter and Hannah 
Smith of Newport; three great-grandchildren, Jace, Trey and Ally Davis 
of Searcy; a brother, Thurman Smith of Fayetteville; and a sister, 
Lorena Simpson of Poughkeepsie. He was preceded in death by his brother, 
Vernon Smith.
      Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Holden 
Avenue Church of Christ in Newport.
      Interment followed in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Dr. Ron Smith, Ransom S. Smith, Hunter Smith, 
Brooks Davis, Mike Whitehead, and Chad Marrs.

JOHN S. (JACK) ALDEN

      Mr. John S. (Jack) Alden, 82 of Tuckerman, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 
2002 in Jonesboro. 
      Mr. Alden was born Nov. 20, 1919 in Manchester, N.H. He retired 
from Rath Bone Corp. in Palmer, Mass. He lived several years in Florida, 
resided in Monson for over 40 years and Venice, Fla. for 10 years before 
moving to Tuckerman about five years ago. Mr. Alden was a Presbyterian 
and an active member in the Rotary Club in Massachusetts and Florida.
      Survivors include two sons, John B. Alden of Ovideo, Fla. and 
Albert Gregg Alden of Houston, Texas; one brother, Arthur Alden of 
Oxford, Miss.; one sister, Dorothy Chisholm of Homestead, Fla.; five 
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Farmers Union Funeral Home in Jonesboro.

      Mr. Jerry Wayne Howard, Jr., 33 of Harrisburg, died Monday, Jan. 
21, 2002 at his home. He was born Aug. 23, 1968 in Trumann the son of 
Jerry Wayne Howard, Sr. and Sue (Davis) Howard. He was a machinist and 
of the Baptist faith.
      Survivors include his parents and step-mother, Juanita (Henley) 
Howard of Harrisburg; grandmother, Helen Caukin of Jonesboro; five 
sisters, Martha Jane Howard of Jonesboro, Sherry Lynn Cheatham of Kansas 
City, Kan., Charity Leigh Howard of Harrisburg, Faith Cham of Lonoke and 
Hope Rachelle Hill of El Dorado; and two brothers, Scott Howard of

      Joel Keith Hurst, 44 of Cave City, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 in

      Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen (Davis) Hurst of the home;

      Mr. James Arthur Morgan, 51 of Newport, died Jan. 19, 2002 in a

step-mother, Johnnie Morgan of Augusta; six daughters, Louvina Morgan,

EMMA LUCINDA HOPKINS SIMMONS ARNETT

      Emma Lucinda Hopkins Simmons Arnett was born July 8, 1905 in Elgin 
to the late L. C. Hopkins and the late Mary Magdalene (King) Hopkins. 
She died Jan. 23 in Searcy. She had been a resident at Woodruff County 
Nursing Home since May of 2001.
      "Miss" Emma was a homemaker, seamstress and artisan, a member of 
the Holden Avenue Church of Christ, Associated Women for Harding and a 
lifelong member of the Extension Homemakers Club. Providing for her 
family and friends, she volunteered many hours serving people of all 
ages. She loved cooking and shared many dishes with friends and those in 
need.
      "Miss" Emma was loved and respected by all that knew her. She 
always had a smile and a good word for everyone.
      Survivors are a daughter, Emma Christine Koch of Minneapolis, 
Minn.; two sons, Jimmy Louis Simmons and wife Jackie of Gautier, Miss. 
and Bobby Glenn Simmons and wife Loretta of McCrory; daughter-in-law, 
Shirley Simmons of McCrory; a step-son, Roy Arnett of Newport; two step-
daughters, Louise Grady and Jetta Grady of Batesville; 22 grandchildren; 
10 step-grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-
grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-
grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
      She was preceded in death by her first husband, Christopher C. 
Simmons, Jr.; her second husband, C. A. Arnett; a daughter, Vivian 
Burton; a son, Christopher C. Simmons, III; two grandsons, Dennis Koch 
and Ronald David Simmons; a great-grandson, William C. Herring, Jr.; 
five sisters and two brothers.
      Services were Saturday at the McCrory Church of Christ with 
grandson, Rev. Bill Holt, pastor of the Holden Avenue Church of Christ 
in Newport, officiating. Interment was in the Augusta Memorial Park 
Cemetery.

RAYMOND R. 'PETE' CLEMENTS

      Mr. Raymond R. "Pete" Clements, 89 of Amagon and former longtime 
resident of Cherry Valley, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002 in Newport. He was 
born June 22, 1912 in Cherry Valley.
      Mr. Clements was a resident of Cherry Valley for most of his life 
before moving to Amagon in 1990. He was a World War II veteran of the 
U.S. Army. He was a farmer for many years and also worked as a machine 
operator at the former Halstead Industries in Wynne for over 10 years. 
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Marie Thompson 
Clements in 1994; his parents; daughter Linda Jo Anderson; sister Essie 
Henderson; and brother, Leonard Clements. He attended the Amagon Baptist 
Church, a former member of the VFW in Cherry Valley, loved gardening and 
working in his yard.
      Survivors include two sons, Jerry Hogan of Wynne and Charles 
Vaughn of Amagon; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and three 
great-great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home 
Chapel in Wynne with Mr. Clements' son, Bro. Charles Vaughn, pastor of 
Amagon Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Tyer Cemetery in

CHARLES LAWRENCE HELM

      Charles Lawrence Helm, 87 of Green Cove Springs, Fla., died 
Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002 in Penney Farms, Fla. due to heart disease. He was 
born May 29, 1914 in Tuckerman the son of Silas P. and Jennie Jowers 
Helm. 
      He moved to Florida at the age of 12 and resided in Lakeland, Fla. 
until 1961 when he moved to Green Cove Springs, Fla. and established 
Helm Funeral Home, which was the only funeral home in Clay County for 
many years and the only emergency ambulance service. The ambulance 
service continued until the mid 1970s. 
      Mr. Helm was a graduate of Lakeland Senior High School and John A. 
Gupton School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tenn., Class of 1950. He 
was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Green Cove Springs, 
the Florida Funeral Director's Association, Moose Lodge #2020 and V.F.W. 
Post 1988. He served in the Florida National Guard and then the U.S. 
Army during World War II, serving in New Guiana and in the Southern 
Philippines, attaining the rank of Staff (Gunnery) Sergeant and was 
awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and 1 Bronze Star, and the 
Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and 2 Bronze Stars. 
      Mr. Helm is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martin Lewis Helm; 
daughter Virginia "Ginger" Caustic (Fred) and son Charles L. Helm, Jr. 
(Peggy), both of Green Cove Springs; brothers, William D. Helm of 
Lakeland, Fla. and Oscar L. Helm of Citrus Heights, Calif.; five

LENA ELIZABETH LOVEJOY

      Mrs. Lena Elizabeth Lovejoy, 90 of Newark, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 
2002 in Batesville. She was born March 23, 1911 in Houston, Texas the 
daughter of John T. and Willie (Driskell) Hassell.
      Mrs. Lovejoy was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ellis Lovejoy, 
and several brothers and sisters.
      Mrs. Lovejoy is survived by two sons, L. J. "Buddy" Lovejoy of 
Newark and Nelson E. Lovejoy of Newark; one daughter, Lena Juanita 
Guerrero of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Nancy Holcombe of Newark; 
five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Monday at Newark Church of Christ with 
Mr. Mark Richardson officiating. Interment was in Edwards Cemetery in 
Newark.

BRINDA MARTIN

      Mrs. Brinda Martin, 52 of Newark, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002 in 
Batesville. Mrs. Martin was born in Batesville on Dec. 4, 1949.
      She was a 1969 graduate of Newark High School. Mrs. Martin married 
Tommy A. Martin on Sept. 19, 1969. She was employed by Batesville 
Manufacturing and White Rogers and had worked at the Newark Schools as a 
cook for several years. Mrs. Martin was a member of the Oil Trough 
Church of Christ. She was a Brownie Troop Leader for several years and 
volunteered at the Newark Schools with activities for the children. Mrs. 
Martin also enjoyed sewing and over the last several years, she enjoyed 
four-wheeler riding with her husband and friends.
      Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her father, William Jackson 
Hensley.
      She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Tommy A. Martin of 
Newark; one son, Shane A. Martin of Newark; one daughter, Sloan Nicola 
Fulbright and son-in-law, Steven of Bono; one sister, Linda Mills of 
Benton Harbor, Mich.; two aunts and one uncle, Velma Garner of Newark 
and Jean and Robert "Bob" Dunehew of Cape Fear, Mo.; and her father-in-
law and mother-in-law, John C. and Jackie (Beard) Martin of Oil Trough.
      Funeral service was 10 a.m. Saturday at the Oil Trough Church of 
Christ with Mr. Craig Wilson officiating. Interment was in Hopewell 
Cemetery in Cord.
      Pallbearers were Nathan Cossey, Doug Cossey, Tim Anthony, Adam 
Vinson, J.C. Cook and Michael Darr.

JAMES FORREST 'PEPPER' MARTIN

      James Forrest "Pepper" Martin, 76 of Hickory Ridge, died Jan. 23, 
2002 in Jonesboro. He was born in Gourdneck Community on May 14, 1925, 
son of the late Ben and Opal Inez Nelson Martin. He attended McCrory 
schools and finished his education while in the Army. He was a World War 
II veteran, a member of the V.F.W., American Legion at Hickory Ridge, 
and Missionary Baptist Church. He loved hunting, fishing, the St. Louis 
Cardinals, his granddaughter as well as other family members.
      Survivors include his wife, Lorrine Florence Jacobs Martin of the 
home; one son, Dennis Ray Martin and wife Jennifer of Hickory Ridge; one 
brother, Billy Wade Martin of Alexander; and one granddaughter, Jenna 
Rae Martin of Hickory Ridge.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Friday at Missionary Baptist Church in 
Hickory Ridge with Bro. Bill Hall, pastor, officiating and Bro. James 
"Buddy" Morris assisting.
      Pallbearers were David P. Burnett, Melvin Vines, Lynn Knight, 
Benny Joe Breckenridge, Jerry Osment and Buddy Wayne Marr. Honorary 
pallbearers were Billy W. Martin, Jr., Terence Teel, Jackie White, Billy 
Ballard and Roger Green.

ALBERT EARL MULLINS

      Mr. Albert Earl Mullins, 88 of Newport, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 
2002 in Newport. He was born Oct. 11, 1913 in Newport the son of Albert 
Franklin and Rosie (Ellis) Mullins.
      Mr. Mullins was a foreman at Riceland Foods, retiring in 1990 
after 35 years of service. He attended the Central Baptist Church and 
enjoyed working, flea markets and gardening.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Della Mae (Arter) Mullins on 
Nov. 21, 1997; one daughter, Brenda Sue Mullins; three brothers, Bill 
Mullins, Lloyd Mullins and Shirl Mullins; two sisters, Beulah Franklin 
and Gladys Kent.
      Mr. Mullins is survived by two sons, Albert Mullins, Jr. and Alvin 
Mullins, both of Newport; four daughters, Lawanda Cornwell of Diaz, Fay 
Whaley, Reda Moorehead and Freda Scoggins, all of Newport; one brother, 
Boyd Mullins of Newport; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 
two special little girls, Krystal and Kelli Baty.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Saturday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel with Bro. Albert Mullins, Jr. officiating and Bro. Larry 
Merrell assisting. Interment was in Lamkins Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Trent Mullins, Thomas Whaley, Jr., Ronnie 
Cornwell, Earl Cornwell, Keith Scoggins and Marion Mullins. Honorary 
pallbearers were Mike Hinkle, Dennis Whaley, Earl Crawford, Jimmy 
Brumley, Roger Steed and Ray Ball.

JOEL S. WEBB

      Mr. Joel S. Webb, 64 of Floral, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002 in 
Floral. He was born Dec. 7, 1937 in Swifton the son of William Sydney 
and Nobie (Huston) Webb.
      Mr. Webb was a self-employed Carpenter and a member of the 
Pentecostal Church.
      He was preceded in death by one son, Darrell Hooker; his parents; 
and two brothers, Paul Webb and Billy Webb.
      Mr. Webb is survived by his wife of 35 years, Aletta (Jones) Webb 
of Floral; three sons, Justin Webb of Floral, Tony Hooker of Cameron, 
N.C. and Dewayne Hooker of Batesville; five daughters, Betty Reeves of 
Floral, Joann Webb of Floral, Sherry Godoy of Raeford, N.C., Lisa Sneed 
of Cameron, N.C. and Leta Jean Stokes of Raeford, N.C.; one sister, 
Betty Sue Webb of Alpena, Mich.; 14 grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren.
      Graveside service was 2 p.m. Monday at Ballews Chapel Cemetery in 
Grubbs with Bro. Chandler officiating. 
      Pallbearers were Earl Jacobs, Justin Soliday, Daniel Terrel, 
William Reeves, Michael Reeves and Terry Stapp. Honorary pallbearers 
were Elmer Brown and Don Warden.

CHARLES 'JUNIOR' YOUNG

      Mr. Charles "Junior" Young, 71 of Newport went to be with the Lord 
on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002 in Little Rock. He was born March 20, 1930 in 
Newport the son of Charles Franklin and Lucy Ettalee (James) Young.
      Mr. Young worked as a machinist at Victor Metals for 30 years and 
was owner and operator of Young's Furniture Store. He was an active and 
devoted member of the Grace Free Will Baptist Church in Diaz, where he 
served on the building committee. His greatest priority was being a 
faithful witness for the Lord. Mr. Young enjoyed fishing, watching and 
playing baseball. He was a great fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
      Mr. Young was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby Young; and 
one grandson, Trey Lankford on Nov. 28, 1994.
      He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Norene (Nally) Young of 
Newport; one son, Lonnie Wayne Young of Newport; three daughters, Sandy 
Ahmad of Manassas, Va., Brenda Kinion of Newport and Melissa Lankford of 
Evening Shade; one brother, Earl Young of Newport; and seven 
grandchildren, Ali Ahmad, Merrium Ahmad, Ameena Ahmad, Farah Ahmad, 
Haley Lankford, Brandon Lankford and Will Lankford.
      Funeral service was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson's Newport Funeral 
Home Chapel with Rev. Orville Berg officiating. Interment was in 
Cheshier Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Henry Lankford, Danny Kinion, Shahid Ahmad, Guy 
Tomlinson, James Ed Davis and Donald Stoner.
