GAY
Silas Gay was born in Illinois in 1868. His wife, Fluretta, was born in
Missouri in 1876. By 1900 Silas and Fluretta had moved to Greene County
and settled in Clark Township. However, just prior to 1900 the Silas Gay
family had been living on a f arm in Oregon County, Missouri. This farm
was located, according to Oregon County fand records, about one mile east
and one-half mile north of the village of Myrtle.
The children of Silas and Fluretta, in 1900,were: Cora A., 1895; and
Elsie, 1899. Elsie later married Andy Little and they operated a general
merchandise store in the Center Hill area.
Silas and Fluretta Gay later had three more children: Roy, Minnie, and
Winnie. Roy and his son, Paul, still live at Center Hill today. Winnie
married Richard Jackson, son of Albert Jackson. Richard later died in an
aviation accident. They had one son whowas also named Richard(see JACKSON
II in Volume II). Minnie became a teacher and, at one time, taught at the
Paragould High School.
Silas and Fluretta Gay are buried at the Center Hill Cemetery. Their
daughter, Minnie, is buried at the same place.

GIBSON
A. Gibson was born in Kentucky in 1820. His wife, Mourning, was born in
North Carolina in 1821. In 1850 the family was living in Henry County,
Tennessee and their children were: Elizabeth, 1840; G. W., 1842; Aaron,
1844; Joseph, 1846; and Mitche ll, 1848.
G. W. (George) Gibson came to Greene County, Arkansas sometime after 1880.
He married a woman named Sarah and, as of 1916, they lived at 621North
Third in Paragould.  In 1930 George Gibson attended a banquet in Paragould
which was later known as "Bud Ryan's Party for the Old Folk." The guest
roster indicated that he was born on Sept. 23, 1840 in Henry County,
Tennessee.

GOFORTH
Delia Goforth was born in South Carolina in 1801. In 1850 she was living
in Wayne County, Tennessee and the other members of her household were:
Sherfield, 1828; Eliza, 1833; Elvina, 1834; Riley, 1836; M., 1837;
M., 1837; and Jinsey, 1839. Appar entlythetwo children born in 1837
were twins.  Riley Goforth moved to Greene County sometime after 1880 but
the exact date is not known. Riley Goforth and his wife, Mary A., are
buried at the Hartsoe Cemetery west of Marmaduke. Riley's marker shows
dates of 1835 and 1917. Mary's marker bears dat es of 1840 and 1911.

GRAYSON
Christopher C. Grayson was born in Tennessee in about 1825. His wife,
Mary G., was born in the same state in about 1830. Christopher and Mary
came to Arkansas in about 1853. In 1860 they were living in Craighead
County in Powell Township. Theirch ildren at this time were: John A., 1
854; Dovey R., 1856; and Sarah E., 1858.

By 1870 the Grayson family had moved to Cache Township in Greene County,
Arkansas. Four more children had been added to the family by this time.:
Emma S., 1861; Adam D., 1864; William F., 1866; and Idar, 1870. An
orphaned boy named Alexander He ard, born in Tennessee in 1857, was
living in the household at this time. William Rhea, a miller born in
Arkansas in 1845, was also present.

By 1880 another child had been added to the Grayson family: James, 1873.
Christopher C. Grayson is buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in western
Greene County; his marker indicates that he died at the age of seventy-six
years. The marker for his wife, Mary G., shows dates of July 15, 1 830 and
March 12, 1913. Adam D., son of Christopher, is buried at Mt.  Zion and
his marker shows dates of Oct. 31, 1863 and Aug. 4, 1921.

Adam D. Grayson was once the sheriff of Greene County and this fact is
indicated on his marker. In 1916 Adam was operating a livery and
transfe r service at 113- 115 West Main in Paragould. At this time
Adam and his family lived at 1500 West Court in the City. Bandy Grayson,
Adam's son, was living at home with his parents. Bandy later became a
medical doctor.

GREENWAY
Thomas Greenway was born in Georgia in 1810. His wife, Olive, was born
in 1814. The state of her birth is not known. In 1850 the familywas
living in Halls County, Georgia and at this time they had seven children.
Two of these children were: Wile y, 1842; and Martha P., 1846. The census
record is incomplete and the full names of the other children are not
known.
It is believed that the Greenway family came to Greene County sometime
during the 1870's. In 1858 Tom and Olive had another son who was named
Julius. On June 14, 1878, Julius Greenway
married Almeda J. Slatton in Greene County. She was the daughter of
Charles and Rebecca Slatton. Apparently Almeda died soon after the
marriage. On March 17, 1880 Julius married Lou Boling.
In 188'0 Julius and Lou Greenway were living in Poland Township and they
had no children at this time. Olive Greenway, mother of Julius, was living
with the family.
Wiley Greenway married a woman named Adaline, born in Alabama in 1851. In
1880 they were living in Poland Township and had no children at this time.
A number of the members of the Greenway families are buried at the Finch
and Pine Knott Cemeteries. Both cemeteries are located in southwestern
Greene County.

GREGORY
Richard Gregory was born in Tennessee in 1821. His wife, Jane, was born
in the same state in 1831. In 1850 Richard and Jane were living in
Davidson County, Tennessee and their children at this time were: John E.,
1845; Reba F., 1848; and Joseph P., 1850.
Little is known about the history of Joseph P. Gregory or his immediate
family, if any. It is known that he came to Greene County during the
latter part of the 19th century. He is buried at the Owen Chapel Cemetery
west of Paragould and his marker s hows dates of 1850 and 1905.

GRESHAM
George Gresham was born in Georgia in 1807. His wife, Delitha, was born
in Tennessee in 1814. In 1850 the family was living in Gibson
County,Tennessee and their children were: Mariah, 1833; Caroline, 1834;
Delitha, 1841; Mary, 1844; and David, 1848. This surname is spelled
"Grissom" in the 1850 census record. However, it has been spelled
"Gresham" since that time.
Sometime during the 1870's some of the members of the Gresham family
moved to Greene County and settled in Friendship Township. In 1880 David
T. Gresham, son of George, was living in Friendship Township and his
mother, Delitha, was the only other m ember of the household.
David Gresham married Frances H. Breckenridge in Greene County on March 1
6, 1881. Frances was the daughter of James W. Breckenridge who was born
in South Carolina in about 1820.
David T. and Frances H. Gresham are buried at the New Friendship Cemetery
north of Paragould. David's markershows dates of 1848 and 1914. The
markerfor Frances bears dates of 1857 and 1921. Delitha (Telitha)
Gresham, mother of David, is also bu ried at this cemetery and her marker
shows dates of 1813 and 1883. The burial place of George Gresham is not
known.

GRIFFIN
Theophilus Griffin was born in North Carolina in 1810. Hiswife, EIizaA.,
was born in Virginia in 1820. In 1850 the family was living in
BolivarTownship of Poinsett County, Arkansas and theirchildren were: Mary
E., 1843; A. C. (Alonzo C.), 1846; a nd Ann C., 1849. All the children
were born in Arkansas.
Alonzo C. Griffin was a Methodist minister. In 1916 he was living at 635
West Poplar in Paragould and, evidently, he had already retired from his
ministerial duties at this time. In 1917 Rev. Griffin moved back to his
old home area in Poinsett Coun ty where he died soon afterward. The Oct. 1
8, 1917 issue of the Paragould Soliphone carried the obituary of Rev.
Griffin. His ministerial work spanned a period of fifty years. His funeral
was held at the Methodist Church in Harrisburg and burial w as at a
private cemetery located on the Greenfield Road five miles distant from
the county seat. He had two sons, Marion and Lewis.
A biographical sketch for James M. Griffin, younger brother of Alonzo C.,
may be found in Goodspeed's Biographical and Historical Memoirs of
Northeast Arkansas.

GRIZZARD
Edmund Grizzard was born in North Carolina in 1787. The name of his wife
is not known. In 1850 Edmund was living in Carroll County, Tennessee and
his children were: Walter B., 1834; Heelon W., 1835; Louisa Ann, 1838;
Manetta Jane, 1839; and Sarah E.  , 1843.
In 1870 Walter B. Grizzard was a merchant in the town of Huntingdon in
Carroll County, Tennessee. His children at this time were: Robert C.,
1861; Ada, 1863; and Edmund, 1864. Lucy Booth, born in Tennessee in 1849,
was a housemaid for the family at this time.
Carroll County marriage recordsshowthat Robert C. Grizzard married Miss
H.F. (Frances) Fuqua on April 24, 1883. A witness for the marriage was
H.W. Grizzard.

J.W. Hammonds married a woman named Sarah, born in Tennessee in 1839. As
of 1880 their children were: Magnolia, 1863; Preston, 1866; Mary, 1871;
and Lillie, 1874. Preston was born in Georgia but all the other children
were born in Tennessee. J.W. Ham mond died in 1887 and was buried at the
Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. His wife, Sarah, died in 1920 and was
buried at the same place.
Patrick Henry Hammonds married Martha F. Chambers in Greene County on Dec.
27, 1879. Patrick died in 1907 and was buried at Linwood Cemetery. As of
1916, Martha was living at 332 West Highland in Paragould.
Rufus Hammonds was a medical doctor. He married a woman named Mattie, born
in Tennessee in 1849. In 1880 their children were: Albert, 1871; Dixie
C., 1874; and Winney,l 878. Winney was born in Arkansas but the two older
children were born in Tenne ssee. Rufus Hammonds died in 1896 and was
buried at Linwood Cemetery.
Mattie Hammonds died in 1921. Her obituary appeared in the Dec. 21, 1
921issue of the Paragould Soliphone. Her birthplace is given as Jefferson
County, Tennessee. She was survived by two sisters: Sue Corbett of Jett,
Oklahoma and Mrs. Henry Hull of Russellville, Tennessee.
Anothersurvivorwas her son, Albert. As of 1916 Albert was living at 609
North Third in Paragould; he was employed at the Robert C. Grizzard Drug
Store in the City.
In 1850 another Hammonds family was living near William and Hannah
Hammonds in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Thiswasthefamily headed byAnnaJ.
Hammonds, born inTennessee in 1809. The only other member of this
household was Nancy J. Hammonds, born in Te nnessee in 1827.

HARDESTY
Amos Hardesty was born in Ohio in 1831. His wife, Caroline, was born in
the same state in 1841. In 1880 this family was living in the town of
Paulding, Ohio (located in Paulding County) and their eleven children
were: George, 1858; Daniel A., 18 62; Anna, 1864; Hammond, 1866; William
S., 1867; Homer A., 1869; Eugene, 1871; Manerva L., 1873; Cora Ellis,
1875; Clinton, 1877; and Flora, 1879. The 1880 census indicates that Amos
Hardesty's fatherwas born in Maryland and his mother, in Pennsylv ania.
All of the children of Amos and Caroline were born in Ohio.
Clinton A. Hardesty, son of Amos, came to Greene County sometime after 1
880 and made his home in Paragould. He was a physician and in 1916
operated a clinic in conjunction with G.A. Lackey at 111South Pruett in
the City. Hardesty and Lackey als o owned a drug store at this same
address. Dr. Hardesty and his wife, Margaret, made their home at 504 West
Highland at this time.
The Sept. 19, 1919 issue of the Paragould Soliphone carried a personal
item to the effect that H.W. Hardsty of Paulding, Ohio had recently paid a
visit to his brother, C.A. Hardesty, of Paragould. Clinton Hardesty's
wife, Margaret Hyatt Hardesty, died in 1934 and was buried at the Linwood
Cemetery. As of 1939 Dr. Hardesty was still practicing and had his office
at the Old National Bank Building. He and his second wife, Mildred, lived
at 623 West Court at this time. Dr. Hardesty died in 1942 and was buried
at Linwood.
In 1880 two other Hardesty families lived near Amos and Caroline Hardesty
in Paulding County, Ohio. One family was that of Philip W. and Adaline
Hardesty, born in 1815 and 1822 in Ohio and Maryland respectively. The
census record shows that both of P hilip's parents were born in Maryland.
Both of Adaline's parents were also born in that state.
The second Hardesty family living in Paulding County, Ohio in 1880 was
that of Francis and Flora Hardesty, born in Ohio in 1854 and 1858
respectively. The family had one child at this time: Theressa, born in
1880. Francis' occupation is listed, in t he census record, as "lawyer."
It should be indicated that the Philip W. Hardesty family lived in the
town of Paulding in 1880 while the Francis Hardesty family lived in
Paulding Township but outside the town of Paulding.

HARPOLE
Solomon C. Harpole was born in Tennessee in 1815. He married Elizabeth
McMahon in Gibson County, Tennessee on Jan. 6, 1837. In 1850 Solomon and
his children were still living in Gibson County, but Elizabeth had
apparently died. The children at this t ime were: James, 1839; John, 1
840; and George, 1842.
George Harpole married a woman named Eliza A., born in Tennessee in 1853.
The marriage took place in Tennessee. In about 1875, George Harpole moved
to Greene County and settled in Huricane Township. In 1880 the children
of George and Eliza were: E lizabeth, 1870; Callie, 1877; and Vincy (a
23 daughter), 1879. Elizabeth was born in Tennessee, but the two younger
children were born in Arkansas. In 1850 there were two other Harpole
families living near Solomon Harpole in Gibson County: (1)
Adam and Polly Harpole, born in Tennessee and North Carolina in 1791and
1793 respectively, and (2) Daniel and Jane Harpole, born in Tennessee in 1
805 and 1808 respectively. The children of Daniel and Jane in 1850 were:
John, 1834; Sarah, 1835; Abram, 1837; Mary, 1839; Ruth, 1848; and
Daniel, 1849.

HATCH
William H. Hatch was born in North Carolian in 1804. The name of his wife
is not known with certainty. In 1850 the Hatch familywas living in Carroll
County, Tennessee and the other members of the household were: Sarah,
1819; Cynthia E., 1832; Sarah, 1834; George D., 1835; Lucinda, 1839;
Sophia A., 1841; Evaline, 1844; Thomas, 1846; and Nancy, 1849. Thomas
H. Hatch, born in 1775, was also a member of the household at this time.
George D. Hatch married while still in Tennessee, but the name of his wife
is not known. George's wife apparently died while the family still lived
in Tennessee. During the late 1870's George and his children moved to
Greene County and settled in Hur ricane Township. In 1880 his children
were: Mary J., 1866; Sarah E., 1867; Kiziah, 1869; John W., 1870; and
George, 1873.
In 1850 another Hatch family lived near William H. Hatch in Carroll
County. This was the family of George B. and Jane Hatch, born in North
Carolina and Virginia in 1808 and 1807 respectively.

HOOKER
Emsley Hookerwas born in North Carolina in 1807. His wife, Sarah Ann, was
born in the same state in 1818. In 1850 the family was living in Scott
County, Indiana and their children were: William, 1832; John W., 1834;
Lorenzo, 1837; Emsley, 1839; Lucinda, 1842; Eliza Jane, 1843; Abner, 1847;
and Nancy, 1849. All the children were born in Indiana. It is believed
that Sarah Ann was the second wife of Emsley Hooker.
Although most ofthe Hookerfamilystayed in Indiana, John W. Hooker and his
wife, Janette, came to Greene County during the 1880's and settled in the
area just north of point where Lafe now stands. The village known as
Hooker later grew up around the John Hooker farm.
John W. and Janete Hooker are buried at the Hooker family cemetery near
the point where the family first settled. This cemetery is almost
inaccessible at present.
As of 1916, Oldridge Hooker, son of John W., was operating a barber shop
at 112~/z West Court in Paragould. He and his wife, Alma, lived at 512
South Sixth at this time. I n 1939 Oldridge and Alma were living at 705
South Fourth in the City.  Volume Nine, Numbers One-Four of the Greene
County Historical Ouarterly features a detailed history of the Hooker
family. This article was written by Dr. C.W. Starnes. Accourding to this
article, Ed Hooker, son of Lorenzo Hooker(brother of John W.), came to
Greene County in about 1902. Ed Hooker and his wife, Effie, are buried at
the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. Ed's marker shows dates of 1878 and 1
968. The marker for Effie bears dates of 1887 and 1953.
Oldridge and Alma Hooker are buried at the Gainesville Cemetery. The
marker for Oldridge shows dates of 1862 and 1940. The marker for Alma
bears dates of 1863 and 1944.

HOPKINS
Col. George H. Hopkins was born in South Carolina in 1809. His wife,
Lucinda, was born in Georgia in 1815. In 1850, this family was living
in Gwinnett County, Georgia and their children were: Melmoth D., 1833;
Elizabeth Ann, 1835; John R., 1836; Green, 1839; Ge orge W., 1840; Martha,
1842; Juliann, 1844; and Samuel A., 1845.
Samuel A. Hopkins, son of George, married a woman named Mary E. while
still in Georgia. During the 1860's Samuel and Mary came to Grene County
and settled in salem Township. As of 1870, their children were: E.E.,
1867; and George Thomas, 1869.  Samuel and Mary E., Hopkins are buried at
the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. The marker for Samuel shows dates of 1
846 and 1900. The marker for Mary bears dates of 1846 and 1918.
In 1916 Dr. George T. Hopkins had his office at 107 North P ruett in
Paragould. He and his wife, Ada, lived at 424 West Court at this time.
Miss Mina Hopkins was a member of the same household. Dr. Hopkins
continued to live at 424 West Court until his death. He and his wife, Ada,
are buried at the Linwood Cemetery. The marker for George shows dates of
1869 and 1943. The marker for Ada bears dates of 1873 and
1953.

HOPPER
The history of the Hopper family begins with William Hopper, born in North
Carolina in 1798. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in Tennessee in 1802. (n
1850 the Hopper family was living in Lincoln County, Tennessee in Civil
District 11. At this time the ir children were: Rachel, 1830; Daniel, 1
832; Pleasant, 1834; Sarah, 1835; Andrea, 1837; Cyntha, 1839; James, 1
841; Mary, 1843; and Horneth, 1845.
There is no evidence that William and Elizabeth Hopper ever came to Greene
County; however it is known that at least one child, Pleasant Hopper, did
come to this area. Pleasant Hopperwas married to a woman named Lucinda.
While still in Tennessee, the y had four children: Mary, 1860; James, 1
863; Lucinda, 1866; and Nancy, 1870. Pleasant moved his family to
Arkansas in about 1871. Here at least three more children were born:
Virginia, 1872; John, 1875; and Matilda, 1878. In 1880 the Hopper fam ily
lived in Hurricane Township and their nearest neighbors were the families
of Margaret Cornman, R. W. Montgomery, James H. Cookston, and Thomas J.
Smith.

HOUSTON
S. L. Houston was born in Tennessee in 1821. His wife, Martha, was born
in the same state in 1831. In 1850 the family was living in Montgomery
County, Tennessee and their only child at this time was Stephen, born in
1850.
The Houston family moved to Greene County during the 1870's and settled
in Hurricane Township. S. L. apparently died during the 1870's.
Stephen Houston married awoman named Tennessee A., born in Tennessee in
1852. In 1880 they were living in Hurricane Township and at this time,
they had only one child, Leonia, born in 1879. Sarah A. Nelson, a ward of
Stephen and Tennessee, was also a member of the household. Sarah A.
Nelson was born in Indiana in 1868.
Newton Houston, son of S. L. and Martha Houston, was born in Tennessee in
1856. He married a woman named Mary J., born in Arkansas in 1859. In 1
880 the family was living in Hurricane Township and their only child was
named Oza, born in 1880. Willi am Houston (brother of Newton), born in
Tennessee in 1860, was living with the family. Martha Houston, wife of S.
L., was also a member of the household.
Stephen H. Houston and his wife, Tennessee, are buried at the Cudd
Cemetery north of Marmaduke. Stephen's markershows dates of 1850 and 191
0. Tennessee's stone bears dates of 1853 and 1934. Martha Houston,
mother of Stephen, is also buried at Cu dd Cemetery and her marker shows
dates of 1831and 1898.
In 1850 another Houston familywas living next to S. L. and Martha Houston
in Montgomery Coutny, Tennessee. This was the family of Henry and Lucretia
Houston, both born in North Carolina in 1793. Their only child in 1850 was
named James, born in 1831.

HOWARD
G. H. Howard was born in North Carolina in 1801. His wife, Malinda, was
born in Illinois in 1815. In 1850 the family was living in Weakley
County, Tennessee and theirchildren were: Helen, 1835; Graves, 1837;
Emily, 1840; Elizabeth, 1842; Ruth, 1844; Pocahontas, 1846; and Martha,
1847.
There is no evidence that G. H. and Malinda Howard ever came to Greene
County, but it is known that their son, Graves, came to this area sometime
before 1880. Graves Y. Howard married a woman named Louisa, born in
Mississippi in 1844. In 1880 they we re living in Hurricane Township and
their children at this time were: Malinda, 1865; Addison, 1867; Eliza, 1
870; Enana, 1872; George W., 1873; Marion (a daughter), 1875; J. Tilden,
1877; and Mary E., 1880.

HOWELL
Phillip Howell was born in Tennessee in 1823. His wife, Mary, was born in
Georgia in 1826. In 1850 the family was living in Lumpkin County,
Georgia and their children were: Sarah, 1848; and Andrew, 1849. Both
children were born in Georgia. Philli p's occupation is listed, in the
census record, as "miner." The census record also shows that mining was
the occupation of many other residents of the area.
During the 1850's the Howell family moved to Greene County and settled in
St. Francis Township. Andrew Howell had apparently died during the 1850's
and in 1860 Sarah S. was the only child in the household.
In 1880 Phillip and Mary were living in Poland Township and there were no
children in the home at this time.
Phillip and Mary A. Howell are buried at the Pruett's Chapel Cemetery
south of Paragould. The marker for Phillip shows dates of 1822 and 1899.
The markerfor Mary A. bears dates of 1828 and 1893.

HUCKABAY
William T. Huckabay (Huckeby) was born in Campbell County, Tennessee in
about 1845. He was the brother of Commodore P. Huckabay mentioned in
Volume I of this book. William T. married a woman named Martha, born in
Kentucky in 1856.
Apparently the Huckabay family moved to Greene County during the early 1
870's. In 1880 William T. and Martha Huckabay were living in Hurricane
Township and their children whose names are definitely known were: John
B., 1872; Mary C., 1874; and Wi lliam P., 1876. It is believed that
another child was born in this family in 1879, but the child's name is not
positively known.

HUCKEBY
John Huckeby was born in Virginia in 1790. His wife Nancy, was born in
Tennessee in the same year. In 1850 the family was living in Campbell
County, Tennessee and their children at home were: Nancy, 1826; Haywood,
1827; Almaren, 1831; Alfred, 1833; and Babe, 1836.
Haywood Huckeby (Huckabay) moved with his family to Greene County and
settled in Hurricane Township during the 1870's. By 1880 he was apparently
a widower. His children at this time were: Mary, 1864; Eliza, 1867;
Julia A. E., 1869; and Nancy M. 18 71. John Wilson, born in Kentucky in
1862, was a servant in the household.

HUDDLESTON
William Huddleston was born in North Carolina in 1805. His wife, Mary, was
born in Tennessee in about 1816. In 1850 the family was living in
Robertson County, Tennessee and their children still at home were: Martha,
1837; John M., 1845; and Willia m, 1848. Richard Crank, born in 1784,
was also a member of the household.
While still in Tennessee John M. Huddleston married a woman named Julia,
born in North Carolina in 1836. In about 1890 John and Julia moved to
Greene County and settled in Clark Township. As of 1900 their son, Thomas,
and daughter-in-law, Mary A., were living in the same household.  Thomas
was born in Tennessee in 1876 and Mary was born in Arkansas in 1 880.
William Huddleston's grandson, John Brewer (born in Arkansas in 1892), was
also a member of the household.
As of 1916 John M. Huddleston was living at701West Highland in
Paragould. Thomas and Mary A. Huddleston lived at 332 West Hunt in the
City. Thomas was the treasurer of the East Arkansas Lumber Company at this
time.
John M. Huddleston is buried at the Linwood Cemetery and his marker shows
dates of 1842 and 1928. The marker for Julia Ann bears dates of 1835 and
1914.

found in Goodspeed's Historical and Biographical Memoirs of Robertson
County, Tennessee.

HUNTER
Layton Hunterwas born in Tennessee in about 1789. Hiswife, Elizabeth, was
born in Kentucky in 1805. In 1840 Layton Hunter was living in Sumner
County, Tennessee.
During the 1850's the Hunterfamily moved to Greene County and settled in
Union Township. As of 1860 their children at home were: Charlotte E., 1
837; Henry C., 1840; and Margaret A., 1843. Henry C. Hunter married a
woman named Georgia Ann, born in Tennessee in 1857. In 1880 they
were living in Friendship Township and their children were: Bettie, 1877;
and Alvie (a daughter), 1879.

istime. Elizabeth and Susan A. Puckett, born in Kentucky and Arkansas in 1
858 and 1862 respectively, were also living in the household.
In 1900 Henry C. Hunter and his wife, Georgia Ann, were still living in
Friendship Township. By this time several more children had been added to
the family: Minnie P., 1881; Charles, 1883; James, 1885, Rufus, 1887;
Edwin, 1892; and Grace, 1899.  26
Layton and Elizabeth Hunter are buried at the Hartsoe Cemetery west of
Marmaduke. Layton's marker shows dates of April 8, 1789 and Oct. 8, 1
876. Elizabeth's marker bears dates of March 8, 1802 and Oct. 13, 1876.
Several other members of the Hunt erfamilies are also buried at Hartsoe
Cemetery.

JACKSON I
B. N. Jackson was born in North Carolina in 1821. Hiswife, Lydia, was
born in Tennessee in 1831. In 1850 B.N. and Lydia were living in
Madison County, Tennessee and they had no children at this time.
During the 1870's the Jackson family moved to Greene County and settled
in Hurricane Township. B. N. Jackson died early in 1880 and Lydia was
left as the head of the household. When the census was taken late in 1880,
the children still at home were : James M., 1857; Josiah D., 1859; Susan
F., 1866; Mildred A., 1869; and Louania, 1871. Lydia's daughter, Eliza
J., and son-in-law, J.M. Trantham, were also members of the household at
this time. tiiza J. was born in "hennessee in i 8b2 ar~d J. ivi . was born
in the same state in 1851.
B.N. Jackson is buired at the Hartsoe Cemetery west of Marmaduke. His
marker bears dates of 1820 and 1880.

JACKSON II
John F. Jackson was born in Tennessee in 1810. His wife, Emily, was born
in the same state in 1811. In about 1839 the family moved to Stoddard
County, Missouri and settled in CastorTownship in or near the town of
Bloomfield.
In 1850 the Jackson family was still living in Stoddard County and their
children at this time were: Ann, 1832; Thomas, 1835; James, 1837; Isaiah,
1840; Richard, 1842; Franklin, 1846; and Elizabeth, 1848. The three older
children were born in Tennes see, but all the others were born in
Missouri.
Apparently most or all of the Jackson family moved to Greene County at
some time during the late 1860's or early 1870's. They settled in Union
Township in or near the town of Gainesville.
James R. Jackson married a woman named Nancy J., born in Missouri in 1841
. In 1870 they were living in Union Township and their children were:
Jennie, 18b2; Albert, 1864; and Lelia, 1866. Jennie and Albert were
born in Missouri, but Lelia was b orn in Arkansas. Jennie Jackson married
John H. Penny in Greene County on Feb. 2, 1880. When the 1880 census was
taken, John H. and Jennie were living in her father's household. John's
occupation at this time was that of clerk.
Isaiah Jackson married a woman named Mahala, born in Tennessee in 1845. In
1880 they were living in Union Township and their children were: Robert, 1
870; Samuel, 1874; Alice, 1876; and Nellie, 1879.
Richard Jackson married Jennie Steadman sometime during the late 1860's.
Jennie was born in North Carolina in about 1847. In 1880 theywere living
in Union Township and theirchildren were: Clara, 1872; Fannie, 1875; and
Arthur, 1879. Other members o f the household were Sallie Steadman
(Richard's mother-in-law), born in North Carolina in 1810, and Maggie
Steadman (Sallie's daughter), born in North Carolina in 1846.
Franklin (Frank) Jackson married a woman named Mariah E., born in South
Carolina in 1852. In 1880 they were living in Union Township and their
children were: Thomas M., 1872; John C., 1874; Zelma, 1876; and Anna, 1
878. Emily E. Jackson (Franklin' s mother) and Amanda Hill (Franklin's
sister- in-law) were living with the family at this time.
James R. Jackson is buried at the Gainsville Cemetery and his marker shows
dates of 1838 and 1881. Richard andJennie(Jenette) Jackson are buried
atthe Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. Richard's marker shows dates of 1843
and 1917. Jennie's marker sh ows dates of 1847 and 1936. Margaret
Porter Jackson is buried next to them and her marker bears dates of 1885
and 1909.
William C. and Sarah T. (Sallie) Steadman, parents of Jennie Steadman, are
buried at the Hartsoe Cemetery west of Marmaduke. William's marker
indicates that he was born in Chatham County, North Carolina in 1792 and
died in 1864. Sarah's maker shows t hat she was born in Pitt County, North
Carolina in 1810 and died in 1887.
In 1916 Richard and Jennie Steadman Jackson were living at 113 South
Fourth in Paragould. Richard was Vice-President of the National Bank of
Commerce at that time. William T. Steadman was the assistant Cashier at
the bank during this period. He was t he son of Leonidas (Lon) Steadman.
In 1880 Phillip and Mary were living in Poland Township and there were no
children in the home at this time.
Phillip and Mary A. Howell are buried at the Pruett's Chapel Cemetery
south of Paragould. The marker for Phillip shows dates of 1822 and 1899.
The markerfor Mary A. bears dates of 1828 and 1893.
Layton and Elizabeth Hunter are buried at the Hartsoe Cemetery west of
Marmaduke. Layton's marker shows dates of April 8, 1789 and Oct. 8, 1
876. Elizabeth's marker bears dates of March 8, 1802 and Oct. 13, 1876.

JACKSON III
Samuel Jackson was born in Tennessee in 1826. His wife, Isabella, was
born in the same state in 1828. In 1850 the family was living in Decatur
County, Tennessee and their children at this time were: Arbella, 1846; and
Malissa, 1848.
During the 1870'sthe Jackson family moved to Greene County and settled in
Union Township. Their children still at home in 1880 were: Seronia, 1 864;
and Henriettia, 1867. Three grandchildren were also members of the
household at this time: William Warren, 1864; George W. Warren, 1866;
and Fannie L. Fraley, 1869.
In 1850 another Jackson family lived next to Samuel and Isabella in
Decatur County. This was the family of Henry and Elizabeth Jackson, born
in North Carolina and Tennessee in 1797. The proximity of these two
families would suggest that they were po ssibly related.

JAMISON
Enos Jamison was born in Virginia in 1793. His wife, Nancy C., was born in
Tennessee in 1808. In 1850 the family was living in Montgomery
County,Tennessee and their children were: Elizabeth, 1830; Josiah C.,
1836; Enos S., 1840; Chesterfield L.W., 1843; and Rebecca, 1849.
Chesterfield Jamison came to Greene County sometime after 1880. He and his
wife, Rebecca Jane, are buried at the Providence Cemetery in northern
Greene County. Chesterfield's markershows dates of 1842 and 1900. The
marker for Rebecca bears dates of 1845 and 1901.

JOHNSON
Daniel Johnson was born in North Carolina in 1824. His wife, Charity, was
born in the same state in 1825. Daniel Johnson and Charity Holleman were
married in Chatham County, North Carolina on Dec. 3, 1842. George Holt
and N.A. Stedman were bondsme n for this marriage.
During the late 1850's the Johnson family moved to Greene Cunty and
settled in Union Township. In 1860 their children were: Julia A., 1846;
James E., 1848; Zack T., 1851; Daniel, 1853; F.C. (a son), 1857; and
Emaline E., 1859. Emaline was bo rn in Arkanss but all the older children
were born in North Carolina.
In 1880 Daniel and CharityJohnson were still living in Union Township and
theirson, Daniel P., was living with them.
JONES Jonathan Shelby Jones was born in Georgia in 1819. His wife,
Bethany, was born in Alabama in 1820. Bibb County, Alabama marriage
records indicate that they were married in that county in 1840.
Sometime during the 1850's the Jones family moved to Greene County,
Arkansas and took up residence in St. FrancisTownship. Theirchildren at
home in 1860 were: EpsyJ., 1842; Joseph N., 1846; Jonathan S., 1849;
Bethany A., 1851; J.Q.A. (a son), 1853 ; Henry C., 1854; and Millard F.,
1855. All these children were born in Alabama.
Joseph Jones, son of Jonathan, married a woman named Sarah, born in
Mississippi in 1849. As of 1880 they lived in St. Francis Township and
their children were: Jonathan, 1868; William, 1871; Henry, 1873; Ida,
1877; and Charles, 1879.
Jonathan Jones, son of Jonathan Sr., married a woman named Lorena, born in
Alabama in 1863. In 1880 they lived in St. Francis Township. They had no
children at this time.
Millard F. Jones, son of Jonathan Sr., married a woman named Mary, born in
North Carolina in 1858. In 1880 they lived in St. Francis Township and
their children at this time were: James, 1877; and Anna, 1878.
In 1880 Jonathan Jones Sr. was living with his wife, Bethany, in St.
Francis Township. Their son, J.Q.A. (John Ouincy Adams?), was still at
home at this time. Two grandchildren, Margaret and William Peterson (born
in Arkansas in 1861and 1879 respe ctively) were living with the family.
Also present was Jonathan's brother, Baler, born in Alabama in 1830.
Apparently Jonathan's wife, Bethany, died sometime between 1880 and 1885.
On Nov. 26, 1885 Jonathan Jones married Mattie M. Jones in Greene County.
Mattie was fourty-fouryears old at the time.

KENNEMORE
Jessee Kennemore (Canamore) was born in Georgia in 1822. His wife,
Rebecca, was born in Alabama in the same year. In 1850 the family was
living in Walker County, Georgia and their children at this time were:
Margaret, 1841; James F., 1843; Charle s D., 1845; and Zachariah, 1
847.
The Kennemore family moved to Greene County during the 1860's and settled
in Jones Township near Delaplaine. Jessee Kennemore's wife, Rebecca, died
and he married Elizabeth Phelps on Oct. 21, 1879 in Greene County.
Elizabeth was forty years of age at the time.

and they had one son, !-ow°ry. still living at home at this timP. Lowery
was born in Arkansas in 1862. A ste son, Drewery ~hc~lps also borr3 iri
Arkansas in 1862, was a member of the household.
Charles Kennemore married a woman named Martha and in 1880 theywere also
residents of Jones Township. Their children at this time were: Sarah,
1868; James, 1873; and Jessee, 1879. Needham Kennemore, brother of
Charles, was living with the family at this time. Needham W. Kennemore was
born in Arkansas in 1857. He was married to Ella Bohanning in Greene
Countyon Feb.7, 1881. Ellawas tvventy years of age at the time. She was
the daugher of Green and Malinda Bohanning (Bowhaning), born in Tenness ee
and Arkansas in 1823 and 1831 respectively. The Bohanning family were also
residents of Jones Township in 1880.
James F. Kennemore first married a woman named Rose Ann, born in Tennessee
in 1845. In 1870 theywere living in Union Township and theirchildren
were: Laura, 1865; and Charles, 1869. Apparently Rose Ann Kennemore died
during the 1870's. In 1880 James Kennemore was living in Jones Township
and his wife's name is listed in the census as Mary, born in Tennessee in
1853. Two more children had been added to the household: Tilman 1873;
and Rosa, 1879. Andrew Phelps, born in Arkansas in 1861
, was also a member of the household.
Several of the members of the Kennemore family are buried at the Jones
Ridge Cemetery east of Delaplaine. James F. Kennemore and his wife, Mary,
are buried here. The marker for James F. shows dates of 1842 and 1904.

KILBERN
Jackson Kilbern was born in Tennessee in 1818. His wife, Pernesa, was
born in the same state in 1823. In 1850 this familywas living in
Lawrence County, Tennessee and theirchildren at this time were: Sarah J.,
1840; Nancy E., 1841; William C., 1842; and John B., 1844.
The Kilbern family moved to Greene County in about 1854 and settled in
Union Township. By 1860 two more children had been added to the
household: Martha E., 1855; and Daniel H., 1858. Both were born in
Arkansas.
In 1850 several other Kilbern familieswere living in Lawrence County,
Tennessee. However, none of these families were in the same neighborhood
with Jackson and Pernesa Kilbern.
