Roll dated Bridgeport, Ala, 13 Sep 1863 where captured Dale or (Dade?) Co. GA when captured 6 Sep 1863 remarks: forwared for exchange Oath of Allegiance to the United States, subscribed to at Fort Delaware, in the month of May 1865 Place of residence Dale or Davie, GA? (he did sign wls very poorly even with just this writing). Complexion: fair Hair: alburn Eyes: blue Hight: 5 ft. 6 in. Additional Comments: * There seems to be two records for John Lafayette Williams, both show enlistment the same day in same Co., and same Co. D. 39th Reg. Georgia Volunteer Inf. Army of Tennessee, CSA. First is John Williams, second is J. L. Williams. When a soldier was exchanged he promised not to fight again S. of the Ohio River. Seems after his release he was at Champion Hill, taken prisioner. Had he remained and not be taken prisioner he would have probably been killed at the Battle of Vicksburg? John Lafayette Williams had family in Dale Co. GA, and AL. Shows paid twice: $50.00 and $44.00 I've learned a detailed saddler was someone who had a special job in leather or making of saddles. He is never mentioned as a Minister. He preached from 1856 until his death in 1888 except missing during the war. He died from malaria September 2, 1888 in Hazlehurst, GA. He is buried there next to his wife Rachel Ann (Manning)Williams, has a Mason ensignia on tombstone, as well as a CSA marker. Both graves are well marked in the Hazlehurst City Cemetery, Hazlehurst GA. *Author feels as a Minister he had been captured, released, and protected because he had a job chosen from a Higher Power, not yet finished.
