"Local and Personal
Old Uncle John Smith, who for many years resided five miles west of
Rockford, passed to the great beyond at his home on Wednesday of last
week, in the 81st year of his age. The immediate cause of his death was
bladder trouble. He served through the war as a Confederate soldier and
it used to be said of him by his comrades that a braver and truer
soldier never trod leather. He never had any children and leaves of his
immediate family on a widow to mourn his death. Uncle John was a good
neighbor and left a host of friends who sympathize with his widow in her
bereavement." (1)
