Ashland Progress
Final rites for Mrs. Joe M. Wood, 66, were held at Mellow Valley Baptist Church 
on June 24th at 3 p.m., conducted by Reverends Elmon Mattox, Grady Birchfield 
and Elmer Wheeles. Interment was in Mellow Valley Cemetery with Blair Funeral 
Directors in charge. Honorary pallbearers were James Farguson, Theron Bailey, 
Earnest Fargason. Henry Dawkins, Willard Morris, Rough Denham Grady Canady, 
Worth Amason, Fred Rush, Tollie Green. L. Barrett, Orville Canady. Active 
pallbearers were Jimmie Jordan, Ed Thompson, Merrell (Tige) Jordan, Cecil 
Johnston, Foy Jordan. Charlie Miller. Mrs. Wood passed away in Clay County 
Hospital on June 22nd, after a long period of ill health. As long as her health 
would permit, she was active in church, educational and community affairs. She 
had been a member of Mellow Valley Baptist Church since early childhood. 
Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Mrs. James F. Carter, Opelika; 
Mrs. Sam H. Henderson, Eldorado, Tex., Mrs. John M. Gilbert, Bham; Mrs. Ben H. 
Andrews Lafayette; one son, Forrest G. Wood, Atlanta, Ga. Four brothers, three 
sisters, seventeen grandchildren.
