The LaFayette Sun May 13, 1908

Death of Mr. R. T. Gaines
The sad news was received here last Saturday morning of the death of
Mr. R. T. Gaines, an aged and highly respected citizen of Milltown. Mr. Gaines
was born in Elbert Co., Ga., Jan 3, 1842, and came to Chambers
County with his father, when quite a lad. In the spring of ’61 he volunteered
to the Confederate army and served until the close of the war. He was married
to Martha Wilson, daughter of Lewis Wilson, six miles southwest of
LaFayette in 1865. He moved to Milltown in 1867, and remained there, identified
with its best interests till his death, which occurred Friday night, May 8th.
He was the father of ten children – eight boys and two girls. Six boys are
living.
The remains were interred in Milltown Cemetery Saturday, Rev. E. M. Stewart
conducting the ceremonies.
Though he is gone, his record will remain with us a lasting treasure.
His life was gentle, but like the still waters it was deep. In this heart of
hearts he carried those he loved, and his hand was never weary, his step never
failed in caring for those who were in any way dependent upon him.
From another place in the May 13, 1908 issue of The LaFayette Sun
Milltown - On last Friday night about midnight, Uncle Bob Gaines died at his
home at this place. Uncle Bob was a devoted citizen and will be missed very
much by his many relatives and friends, as he had been here about 40 years.
The remains were interred in the Milltown Cemetery Saturday evening at three
o’clock. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved ones.
(Per “Survey of Cemeteries in Chambers County, Alabama” there is a tombstone in
the Milltown City Cemetery that reads: “Robert T. Gaines, Jan. 2, 1842 – May 8,
1908” He is buried next to several other Gaines.)
