Bedford Gazette
Mrs. Julia Esther Smith and mother of Rev. George E. Smith, pastor of the 
Wenwood United Brethren in Christ Church, Altoona, died this morning at 3 
o'clock at her home in McKee.  Mrs. Smith had been in feeble health for the 
past fourteen years, being afflicted with rheumatisim and complications, to 
which her death was attributed.  Mrs. Smith was born at New Paris, Bedford 
county, September 18, 1861, the daughter of George N. and Julianne Elis, both 
now deceased.  She was united in marriage with John H. Smith on June 21, 1881, 
and to this union ten children were born,  four of whom survive, as follows:  
Ira E. Smith of Altoona, E. Ressler Smith of Hiram, O. and Mrs. Charles Imler 
with whom the mother resided at McKee.  She is also survived by twelve 
grandchildren and three sisters:  Mrs. Mary Calahan of Ryot, Bedford county, 
Mrs. Nora Boyer of Philadelphia; and Mrs. Alice Berryhill of Waynesville, O.; 
Mr. Smith died two years ago.  Mrs. Smith resided during her early life in 
Bedford county, later moving with the family to Catfish and in 1908 moved to 
McKee.  She was a member of the United Brethren in Christ church at East 
Freedom, was devoted to the church and her home and spent her declining years 
largley with her Bible and many friends who called at her home.  Funeral 
services will be conducted from the home at McKee, Thursday afternoon at 2 
o'clock, in charge of her pastor, Rev. A.L. Thompson.  Interment in the 
Greenlawn cemetery at Roaring Spirng.
