Battalion of First
Indiana Cavalry Regiment
(This regiment
(originally composed of eight companies) was organized at Evansville, IN, August 20, 1861,
to serve three
years. Captains Stewart's and Bracken's
companies of independent cavalry,
organized at
Indianapolis, IN, July 4 and 9,1861, were transferred to this regiment as
companies I and K.
Two more companies,
composed of drafted men, to serve nine months, were organized in November,
1862,
and assigned to this
regiment as companies L and M, and were mustered out of service July 22, 1863.
The original members
(except veterans) of companies A to H, inclusive, were mustered out September
12, 1864,
by reason of
expiration of term of service, and the veterans and recruits consolidated into
a battalion of two companies and retained in service until June 22, 1865, when
it was mustered out. The original
members (except veterans)
of companies I and K
were mustered out at different dates, as follows: Company I, July 3, 1864 and company K,
June 19, 1864, by
reason of expiration of term of service, and the veterans and recruits of these
two companies
formed into a
detachment, and retained in service until May 31, 1865, when it was mustered
out,
in accordance with
orders from the War Department.)
