WILL OF SAMUEL LANE
Will of Samuel Lane was dated 9 Apr 1771, proved 18 Feb 1772, recorded in
Philadelphia Will Book P: page 221-223
In the Name of God Amen, I Samuel Lane of New Providence Township in the
County of Philadelphia in the Province of Pennsylvania, Yeoman, being of
sound Mind and Memory thanks be to God, therefore do make this my last Will
and Testament in manner following Viz. First I recommend my Soul
to God that gave it, and my Body to the Earth to be buryed in a Christian
like manner, and as touching my Estate in this World, I dispose of the same
as follows. Imprimis I will that all my just Debts and funeral
Charges be paid.
- Item- I give and devise to my loving wife
Rebecca Lane part of the land that we now live on, Beginning in the middle of
Perquiomen Creek, thence by land of Mathias Koplin, North West two hundred
and thirty two perches to a post, thence by Land of John Schrack North East
eighty nine perches to a post, thence by other Land of mine, East one hundred
& forty two perches and a half to a post, thence South four Degrees West
forty one perches and a half to a post , thence South Eighty five Degrees and
a half East fifty five perches to the middle of the said Creek, thence down
the same according to the natural courses there of one hundred and ninety two
perches and a half to the place of beginning Containing two hundred and four
acres and three quarters of an acre of Land (more or less) during her natural
life, with all and singular the buildings and improvements there unto
belonging, that she may have a place of residence for herself and my four
youngest Daughters. to wit. Sarah Lane, Elizabeth Lane, Rebecca Lane, and
Mary Lane to live on with their Mother untill they are of age or marryed, my
said wife shall not clear any (SamueLane) more of the land only one acre per
annum, nor destroy any Lumber but what is needful for repairs on the said
place.
- I give my wife the sum of Ten pounds per annum for each of my youngest
Daughters towards their maintenance Schooling and Clothing, And I also give
my loving Wife all my personal Estate (Accepting twelve hundred pounds the
Tavern place was lately sold for) to her and her heirs and assigns
forever.
- I give to my son Edward Lane the sum of five pounds in gross to be paid
out of my Real estate that is unsold, and I also give him the sum of three
Pounds lawful money to be paid to him annually during his natural Life, and
all my Wearing Apparel.
- I give and bequeath to my grandson Samuel Lane the sum of twenty pounds
lawful Money to be paid to him when he arrives to the age of Twenty one Years
out of my Real Estate, together with my Silver Shoe Buckles, knee Buckles,
Stock Buckle and Sleeve Buttons. And I also do will that my Executors
pay to his Sisters to wit, Ann Lane, Mary Lane, Hannah Lane, and Elizabeth
Lane and his Brother Edward Lane the sum of Twenty Shillings to each of them
out of my real Estate aforesd. as they severally arrive at Age.
- I give to my Daughter Hannah Davis the Sum of three pounds per annum
lawful money during her Natural Life, out of my Real Estate, And to her two
children by a former Husband, Rebecca and Anne Rambo, twenty Pounds lawful
money to each of them as they arrive at the Age of eighteen Years. And
to her five Children by Zachariah Davis to wit: Samuel, James, William, John
and Edward twenty shillings to each of them out of Real Estate as they arrive
at Age of Twenty one Years. (SamueLane).
- I give to my grand Children, which are the Children of John Rambo
deceased Viz Ann Todd, Alce Roberts, Peter Rambo, and Rachel Rambo, the
Sum of twenty shillings lawful money to each of them, to be paid the two
oldest in one year after my decease and to the two youngest as they arrive at
age out of real estate as aforesd.
- It is my Will and do order that if any of my grand Children die before
they come of age, their Brothers and Sisters shall have their Legacies-
equally amongst them.
- I will that my Executors do sell all my
Real Estate (only what I have devised to my loving wife during her
natural Life and a Lot of Land laid out joining Christian Schrack's land
Containing about Eighty three Acres, part of which my Sister Eleanor
lives on and which she is to have during her Natural Life) within one
year after my decease for the best price that can be gotten for the same,
A' I do empower them to make good and lawful Deeds for the same to the
purchasers.
- I give ...

but not to her husband out of my real Estate.
- I give to my grand Daughter Rebecca Church the sum of Two hundred Pounds
lawful Money, when she arrives at eighteen Years of Age out of my Real
Estate.
- I give and bequeath to my five Daughters Viz Christiana Richardson, Sarah
Lane, Elizabeth Lane, Rebecca Lane and Mary Lane all the rest and residue of
my Estate, which is not herein already given and devised, to be equally
divided amongst them Share and Share alike as they arrive at Age, only
Christiana shall not have her dividend untill eight years after my Decease,
and then the sd. fifty four pounds hereby given her shall be counted to her
in her Dividend (SamueLane.)
- I will that after the decease of my loving Wife and my said Sister
Eleanor Robeson the lands hereby given and devised them shall be sold by my
Executors, and I do empower them or the Survivors of them to make good Deeds
for the same, and the money arising from the Sale thereof to be divided
amongst my five youngest Daughters equally, and if any of them happen to die
under Age and without lawful Issue their portion or share shall be equally
divided amongst the Surviving youngest Sisters, and if any of them should
happen to die and leave lawful Issue her portion shall be and remain to her
Child or Children.
Lastly I do appoint constitute and Nominate my beloved Wife Rebecca
Lane, My Cofsin Robert Shannon and my Neighbour Henry Newberry Joint
Executors of this my last Will and Testament. And I nominate my loving
Friends Henry Pawling and Roland Evans to be Trustees of this my last will to
see and take care that it may be performed according to the true intent and
meaning thereof And I do here disannull and make Void all other former Wills
by me made in Word or Writing Ratifying and confirming this and no other to
be my last Will and Testament In witness where of I have here set my hand and
Seal the nineth day of April Anno Dom 1771 Samuel Lane
Signed, Sealed, Published pronounced and declared by the Testator Samuel Lane
to be his last Will and Testament in the presence of Us the Subscribers.

Phila. February 18 th, 1772, Personally
appeared Elijah Davis, Henry Remer and Pat Menan the three witnesses to the
foregoing Will, and on Oath did declare that they saw and heard Samuel Lane
the Testator therein named, Sign, Seal and Publish and declare the same Will
for and as his Last Will and Testament, and that at the execution thereof he
was of sound disposing Mind Memory :& Understanding to the best of their
