DuBois and the Northwest Mining and Exchange Company also abandoned
its operation.
From the opening of the first mine in 1875 or 1876 down
to the time of the closing of the mines in 1929 millions of tons of
coal were taken out of the country surrounding DuBois and thus was
another natural resource of the community removed which built up
large fortunes in New York, Rochester and Buffalo, with
comparatively small benefit to the locality from which this wealth
was drawn.
