Weichel, Alexander P., (lot marker), Co B. 63rd PA Vol, Section 3, Range 14, Lot 1, [was one of at least 10 children of Henry and Margaret Weichel.  Born in PA about 1843, he grew up in Indiana Township in a section which later became O’Hara Township.  He joined Company B of the 63rd PA Volunteers which was mostly formed from a military group in Sharpsburg called Collier’s Guards.  They had drilled previously to being signed for the army, and were considered a prime group of soldiers.  During the long march to Gettysburg on the first day of July 1863, he was promoted to 7th Corporal.  On July 2, 1863, the regiment was holding a road next to Sherfy’s Peach Orchard near Devil’s Den and Round Top.  The enemy was in a wooded area across an oat field, when their shells started bombarding the 63rd.  Alexander was killed by a shell, the only one of 34 wounded men in the regiment to die that day.  At some point his body may have been recovered and sent to Pittsburgh, but it is just as likely that the tombstone in Greenwood is just a commemorative.  His body may have been one of the 3 children moved to the Greenwood plot from the Presbyterian churchyard in 1891], (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Weichel, Henry, (lot marker), 1812 - 1895, Father, Section 3, Range 14, Lot 1, [was the father of Civil War veterans Alexander Weichel and Joseph S. Weichel, H. Nelson, 1867 – 1918, Father, Section 5, Range 8, Lot 7 owned by H. Nelson Weichel, [Harry Nelson Weichel was the son of Joseph Weichel, the Civil War veteran and his wife Sarah E. Doads. He was found on the 1880 O’Hara Township census while his father was farming and had 3 children in the house, with Nelson the oldest. By 1900 Nelson was married to wife Benena and living at #67 Cherry Street. He was working as a clothing salesman, but in the next census was an inspector at a pipe mill. The couple had 5 children in all. Some confusion exists in the Greenwood records, as Nelson does not appear in the original interment book under the name Weichel. There is a NW Weigel who died on December 3, 1918, was interred on December 6th. He died in Pittsburgh at age 51 of pneumonia and was buried in Section 5, Range 9, Lot 20. It is possible that this is Nelson Weichel, as Margaret Weichel also appears in this lot. This may have been more than a spelling mistake in the records, with the 2 really being buried in the Range 8 plot, or they could have been removed to Range 8 at a time after interment], (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Weichel, Margaret, 1894 – 1918, Section 5, Range 8, Lot 7 owned by H. Nelson Weichel, [Margaret Weichel is not in the Greenwood interments for this lot. It is possible that she was listed as Margaret Weigle, buried on December 3, 1918 in the lot owned by Charles Weigel in Range 9. Much confusion over the names of this family exists. We don’t know if she was the wife of Raymond, but that is also possible. At some point she was removed to this plot], (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Weigle, Mary A., Born Dec 26, 1829, Died Feb 6, 1899, Section 4, Range 9, Lot 13 owned by Mrs. Mary Ann Weigle, [Mary Ann Weigle was the wife of John Weigle of Sharpsburg. John was a carpenter who settled in Sharpsburg as early as 1860, but because of the difficulty in finding the proper spelling of his name in census records, he is difficult to trace. The couple had at least 5 children, Samuel, William Edward, Emma and Florence. Mary was interred on February 9, 1899 and may be related to Mary Ann Fitzgerald, who was the first interment in the plot. Also interred in the plot are Sarah Webster who died in Etna at age 58 in 1900, and an infant Anderson who died in 1923. Neither have tombstones], (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Shortly after that, he married his wife Charlotte Brown. Their first known child, John, was born in 1867. In all, they raised at least 8 children, some of whom are also in the family plot. Radcliff appears in the 1870 Directory of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Cities as a drayman, living at #64 3rd Avenue. By 1874 he owned an ice house, which grew into a substantial business. The last he appears along with advertising his business, the Cold Spring Ice Company, was in 1882. Sometime between then and 1900 he moved to Stewart Township, Fayette County. Her parents are not known, and we don’t know when she immigrated, but in the 1880 Pittsburgh census she and husband Radcliff have 5 children and the oldest is a son, John R., who was born about 1867 in PA. The plot contains 4 other children, so she may have had up to 9 children in all. In 1900 she and Radcliff were living in Stewart Township, Fayette County with their youngest surviving son, Robert.
