Saint, [Melvin Mansfield was born about 1905 and died in Pittsburgh of pneumonia at age 5 on December 8, 1910. He was interred 2 days later in the Saint family plot. He is probably the son of Ella Saint, daughter of James Giles Saint and his wife Mary. One family researcher has her married to John B. Mansfield, with no other information. The only reference to her found is the 1910 Pittsburgh census in which she is listed as a widow, age 45, with 3 sons, James C. age 8, John B. age 6 and Albert M. age 4. All of the children were born in Colorado], (contributed by Diane Nichols) Marshall, William, Section 3, Range 3, Lot 9 owned by William Marshall, [According to Greenwood interments, the William S. Marshall in Section 3 was a soldier. He joined the 155th PA Volunteer Infantry on August 22, 1864. After taking part in almost all of the major battles during the war, he was mustered out with the company on June 2, 1865. There are several William Marshalls all over northern Allegheny County, all with varying dates of birth, so determining which is which has been very difficult. This William Marshall was found in the 1870 Indiana Township census with wife Susan, and sons William and Andrew. In 1880 the family lived in East Deer Township where he worked as a plasterer and is listed as being born in Ireland. He died in Midland, Beaver County, PA at age 78. The 1920 census has a John W. Marshall in Midland whose father was born in Ireland and worked with building supplies, so this may be a son of William, and the home in which he died. William suffered from lobar pneumonia and was buried next to his wife, Susanna who died in 1894. A son John who died in 1943 is also buried in the plot. William died March 2, 1920 and was interred on March 4. If William ever had a tombstone, it is now gone. But someone in the past had planted a rhododendron shrub on the grave. It is shaded by a tall spruce tree], (contributed by Diane Nichols) Marshall, Alexander Marshall, (lot marker), 1841 – 1904, Section 2, Range 13, Lot 5 owned by Alexander Marshall, [One family researcher lists Alexander Marshall as born on August 1, 1842 in Mullaghtague, Armagh, Ireland to Thomas and Rebecca Marshall. He married Isabella Morrow and immigrated to the US on the ship “Alex Marshall” which left Liverpool and arrived in New York on June 30, 1869. He is listed as 26 years old, a miner bound for PA. With him was his wife Isabella, age also 26, and their two daughters, Elisa, age 5, and Isabella, age 3. In 1870 the family was in Pittsburgh’s 10th Ward and Alex was listed as a laborer. His naturalization record was filed in Pittsburgh in 1872. In 1900 they lived at #1530 Penn Avenue in the 10th Ward. They had a granddaughter Jane and a grandson Alex in the home. Alex was a policeman. Also in the house was daughter Eliza, married to William Spraul. Alex died in Colonia, Pa according to Greenwood interment records at age 63 of intestinal cancer. He was interred on August 8, 1904], (contributed by Diane Nichols) Marshall, Bella, (lot marker), His Wife, 1846 – 1915, Section 2, Range 13, Lot 5 owned by Alexander Marshall, [Isabella Morrow married Alexander Marshall in Ireland. They immigrated on the ship “Alex Marshall” in June of 1869 to New York City with two small daughters. They apparently came directly to Pittsburgh, where they were listed in the 1870 census. By the 1900 census, Bella, as she was listed, gave the census taker that she had given birth to 13 children, but only 4 were living. The 1880 census has not yet been found. Isabella died on November 9, 1915 in Monaca PA of a fractured skull received in an accident. She was 73 years old. She was interred on November 10, 1915], (contributed by Diane Nichols) Marshall, James E. L., 1886 – 1939, Section 2, Range 12, Lot 10 owned by Mrs. Isabell Marshall, [James E L Marshall may be a grandson of Alexander and Isabella Marshall of Northern Ireland and Pittsburgh. He was difficult to track in census records, although he appeared in 1920 in Monaca, Beaver County, Pa with wife Lena and her mother, Ellen Brush. He was born in PA and his wife in New York. He was working as a furnace man in a steel mill. In 1930 he appears in Toledo, Ohio with Ellen Brush, his wife apparently dead. He died in Monaca on November 12, 1939 of toxemia and a lung abscess and was interred on February 15, although his name appears as James E. In 1920 she and her sons, Wilson and Clyde were living on a farm on Kittanning Pike with a niece, Edna Allston, but without John. That is the only known census with her listed as Martha. Cornelius followed his brother Robert’s example, and joined Company E of the 63rd Regiment of the PA Volunteers in December of 1861. During April of 1862 he laid in the swamps near Yorktown Virginia as the regiment was bombarded by the Confederate Army. In May of 1862 the brothers took part in the Battle of Fair Oaks. During the Seven Days Battle, on June 30, 1862, Cornelius was standing next to Thomas Lawrence of the 188th Battalion Reserve Corps when an enemy artillery shell landed next to them. Cornelius was instantly killed and Thomas badly wounded. Robert Millar went out looking for his brother the next morning and found him dead. Present at the Seven Days Battle, Robert was part of the company that defended the 118th Battalion of Union Artillery during the ebb and flow of battle. On June 30, 1862 he noticed his brother was not on the retreated lines of the company and received reports of men falling victims to Confederate shells. He set out looking for him at first light and came upon his body and that of wounded Thomas Lawrence, a member of the artillery company. Leaving his brother behind, he carried Thomas back to the Union lines and accompanied him to the General Hospital at Annapolis, arriving 3 days later on July 4th. Only 10 years old when the war started, he enlisted just before his 15th birthday on the 19th of August 1864 at Camp Curtain, Harrisburg. He was active in the 200th PA Infantry, which pursued the rebel army until its September 9 surrender. The regiment went into camp at Nottoway Court house, then marched on to Alexandria. On May 30, 1865 new recruits were sent to the 51 Regiment and others were mustered out. According to the Sons of the Union Veterans, Charles was mustered out on May 13, 1865 at Alexandria. His whereabouts are not known until he appears in the 1880 Sharpsburg Census, married and with 2 small children. He was occupied as a house painter and the couple eventually had 4 known children. Young Charles was born in January of 1875, according to one researcher, but the tombstone has the date Oct 15, 1872. So there is a discrepancy over which Charles is where and what family he belongs to. This man was a Private in the Medical Corps who died in the service of his country according to his tombstone. The cemetery records list him dying in Sharpsburg at age 42 of broncho pneumonia.
