SECTION 4000 This area was first used about 1796, and the upper portion was first surveyed (perimeter) in 1800. This section did not officially become part of the church cemetery until the 1960's. It generally consists of three areas, as follows: Old Johnston Graveyard: This area was first used in 1796, and officially designated a cemetery for the community in 1800. It was at the northwest corner of the Robert Johnston farm. Burials were evidently scattered, with each area family using a section cleared between groves of trees. Therefore, there are no organized systematic rows or lots that are generally applicable. Using best judgment as to rows, row (or lot) numbers have been assigned west to east as 4001 to 4033. In each row, the sites are numbered right to left (north to south). This entire area is currently inactive, with the probability of many unknown burials within its boundaries because of the lack of records. Snodgrass Cemetery: This area is very similar to the Old Johnston Graveyard in appearance, and was used by area families who were friends of the Snodgrass family. Again, using best judgment as to rows, the lots are numbered 4034 to 4042, a continuation of the Johnston numbering. This area is also inactive except for one row of graves, as described below. It is also likely that many unknown burials exist within its boundaries. Snodgrass Lots: This is the only currently active area in Section 4000, and is being used by descendents of the Snodgrass family. The descendents have noted a general plan for the use of the remaining gravesites (about 6 left). Again, they have no deeds for this area. |
