Merchant,
C. B. This is one of the most known markers in the area. The granite ball supposedly was polished after it was set in place. Maybe
in the late 1800's, early 1900's. For some reason, it has slowly rotated over the years. It is periodically written up in the newspapers
and magazines. No one is sure why it does this. Freezing and thawing of water under the ball or heating by the sun during the day? You
would think it would move in random directions, but supposedly has moved in the same direction. The "bald" spot is facing to the south east.
Eleven smaller round markers and several flat ones form a circle around this memorial, probably children and other family members. Front view & back view |
