I wish to present my readings of the ancestral loved ones, buried at Gaffield Cemetery. This cemetery is very old, as I find no burial there within the past 100 years. It's owned and maintained by the efforts of the St. Albans Township Trustees. The cemetery is located on the southeast corner of Morse Rd. (CR25) & Outville Rd. (CR40). Although it is well maintained and kept nicely mowed and trimmed, the memorials are mostly in a very deteriorated condition, perhaps because of it's remote location. During my last visit there on 10 November, 2002, I met a very kind man mentioned that he has resided on a nearby property within view of the cemetery since 1946, and during that time has found the cemetery vandalized many times. He said almost all the destruction has taken place within the past 50 years, before that, most of the memorials still stood and areas that are presently barren of memorials, once contained large groups of family headstones. This started out as a Church owned cemetery, the Gaffield Methodist Episcopal Church was first organized in 1811, and by 1912, all that remained of the church was a stone foundation hardly discernable in a grassy area on the opposite road corner, diagonally from the cemetery. The cemetery was originally a burial place for the local Welsh community, today there is nothing left to even suggest a church once stood there. From what I have gleaned from earlier reports dated about 1895 and rewritten in about 1912 by local genealogist concerning this cemetery, "the first burial was that of Lucy A. McCreary, who died June 8, 1821." There accounts mention that there's no such inscription upon the headstones remaining there today. My recent research in this cemetery has produced evidence that alters these findings. I believe I have found the memorial stone of Lucy, I recently located and photo documented a memorial stone containing that exact death date with the name Amanda, dau. of John & Amanda McCrary , so it's quite possible that the "A. in Lucy A. is actually (Lucy Amanda). In addition to this, I also found a memorial stone containing an older death date, that being the memorial of Joel Philbrook, who died Sept. 16, 1820. As a result of significant vandalism and neglect of the memorials in this cemetery, a great percentage of the stones are broken and nearly impossible or at least very difficult to read today. There's a story about one of the longest lived persons of this area, who lived not far from this cemetery. He was known as Walter B. McCreary, who made his home nearby, probably the same cabin his parents built when they arrived in 1816. He resided there until shortly before his death in 1895. There are four members of this family buried here, including "Ole Walt". One last comment about Walt McCreary, my research thus far, finds that he was probably the last person buried in this cemetery, Dec. 2, 1895. I wish to express my gratitude to Mrs. Betty (Rose) Duke, for her sharing of historical information about this old and almost forgotten cemetery. As always, have made every effort to transcribe correctly the inscriptions contained on these stones, but due to the deteriorated condition of most of them, make no warrenty to being 100% correct. Should anyone have information improving on these readings, I will gladly revise my readings to reflect this new information. My readings are in rows from front to back or north to south. Starting on the row nearest Outville Road, which is located on the western border of cemetery. Received an email correspondence on 2 Aug., 2003 containing additional family information by the kindness of James Vincent. This information will be noted in the area of Row 6, i. through viii. with the symbol (**) in the transcription portion of this report. The information (**) source is from the book "Decendants of William Montgomery 1751-1821", compiled by Frank C. O'Bannon. Robert M. Sizelove, Sr. , © 6, October, 2002, last revised 12 Feb., 2004.
