I would like to present my transcriptions of the loved ones buried at Liberty Church
Cemetery. It is located on the eastern edge of Liberty Twp. There are no villages or
towns nearby. This cemetery is situated about mid way between Johnstown and Newark,
north of Granville, and northwest of sr 661 and Fredonia, Ohio. This cemetery has some very
old
memorials and it's quite possible that it was originally owned or founded by the Church
situated directly across the street from it. It is presently managed and nicely cared for
by the Liberty Township Trustees.
The cemetery is located at the corner of Dutch Lane Road (county road 15) & Liberty
Church Road, (township Road 160). The cemetery grounds are fairly level, with only a
slightly lower elevation near Dutch Lane Rd. The cemetery has been cleaned recently
and all overgrowth has been removed. Improvements have made all memorials relatively
easy to locate and accessible. With the exception of a rather clustered area near the
center of the old portion, most of the cemetery is nicely ordered in defined rows.
There are two general areas to this cemetery, the portion nearest Dutch Lane is the
oldest and contains the largest number of stones. There's also a narrow entrance to
the cemetery grounds, which separates the old section from the newer portion. The
entrance is located on Liberty Church Road. If you plan to visit this cemetery,
there's ample parking space around the church, and would be the recommended place
for you to park. As always, I try very hard to take my time and remain mindful to
accuracy, but due to the condition of some of the older deteriorated stones I can't
be 100% sure of readings. If you have any information, which improves upon the
readings, willing to make updates providing your information is sourced. I am
responsible for the transcriptions and accompanying photo documentation for this
report. Information noted between brackets [ ] will be information not inscribed on
the stone, but rather my personal observations and /or knowledge, any updates and /or
corrections supplied by others will be marked by [ * ] and contain the name of source.
My readings will start at a bearing nearest Liberty Church Road, in rows from right
to left and front to back.
For those that are perhaps seeing these transcriptions for the first time, the transcriptions may give on first glance, the appearance of a great many typos, so I feel obligated to explain that the abundance of y, m, and d represent abbreviations for year, month and day. Although you will find most engravers follow similar patterns, it seems there are several different abbreviations used to represent these three time terms including: y, yr, yrs, yr's & years; m. mo, mos, mo's, and months; d. da, das, da's, and days and on rare occasions, h, hr, hrs, hr's, and hours. I tend not to use commas except to seperate surname from given name, given name from date, except where found on actual inscription, same goes for the [.] (period). When you see the symbol [_] (underscore), I use it to represent missing or unreadable letters, or if a lot of letters are unreadable I may express it by several periods, such as Jos...h . Sometimes you will find raised letters such as "c" in surnames such as in McClain, or if the engraver added smaller letters that were left out and added later, when I encounter them, tend to express them, when possible, as found on the stone. Sometimes engravers will use the term Æ or æ, this is just a term that generally replaces the word "aged". One last comment, all actual text found engraved, will come first in bold text. All comments, observations, personal knowledge remarks added by submitter, concerning an individual, but not inscribed on stone, will then proceed in regular text. My first readings of this cemetery begin this date, 24 March, 2003. Robert M. Sizelove, Sr. © . |
