Col. 2 POPE- John M. Pope was born June 27th 1808 in Williamsburg County, SC and died at his home near his birth place, Jan 24th 1883. He was a member of the Methodist Church at "old Muddy Creek" for 43 years and lived a consistent member of the same till his death. He was an honest man. Wherever known he was characterized by his integrity. His life was quiet and unassuming. He was gentle and kind in his family and harmless in his community. he had been declining in health for several months but while it was feared that the end was near, his death was sudden. He had walked out tot he farm in the afternoon and expressed a desire to assist, but soon was unable of -- [ film margin cut image of eight or nine words]-- he was speechless and soon afterward passed away; leaving behind him an affectionate wife, two sons and two daughters to mourn their loss: but they sorrow not as those who have no hope. s/ A.
