The Goldfield Cemetery was
established in 1905, shortly after the creation of
Goldfield, Nevada. Goldfield is located approximately 25 miles south of Tonopah, Nevada. The town had its beginnings with mining in 1902. The current cemetery lies on a hill overlooking the town of Goldfield. The cemetery is a large cemetery, and has several different sections. Where no section is apparent, the section is listed as "general". The Pioneer section is the second resting place for 70 of Goldfield's earliest pioneers, as well as some homeless and a murder suspect who comitted suicide while in jail. The original cemetery was located in Goldfield, next to the railroad track. The railroad didn't want passengers to step off the train, onto the graves and the city didn't want the graves near their big hotel. In 1908, a group of men, known as the "Official Ghouls", removed at night the graves to the new location. now known as the Pioneer Section. This section is set off from the rest of the cemetery and can be seen in the arial view below, at the lower left. |
