Overton, Nevada is a small community located about 1 hour north of Las Vegas, Nevada. It was settled about 1865 by pioneer Mormons sent by Brigham Young to expand their farming. One of the first burials in the Pioneer Cemetery was in 1865. Around 1870, with Overton now part of the new state of Nevada, (this area was previously part of Utah) the pioneers found the taxes higher than Utah and abandoned the settlement. The land was resettled in 1880 by other Mormons. In the early 1930s, the U. S. Government completed the Hoover Dam project and soon Lake Mead began forming. St. Thomas and Kaolin were two settlements that were casualties of the rising Lake Mead. In 1935, 78 graves in the cemeteries at Kaolin and St. Thomas were removed to Logandale, Overton, and New St. Thomas cemeteries. According to the U. S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation report, 8 of those graves were relocated to the Pioneer Cemetery.
