NEVADA'S TRIBUTE TO UNION SOLDIERS AND SAILORS, MARCH 19, 1891
reads the inscription on the monument that was first dedicated on Memorial Day, May, 1891. Ever vigilant, the statute of a Civil War soldier stands as a quiet sentinel, keeping watch over the graves of soldiers buried on either side of his granite pedestal.
The sentinel - standing at parade rest, wearing a kepi cap and great coat, holdinga rifle was erected as Nevada's memorial to honor Union Veterans of the Civil War.

In 1891, the Nevada State Legislature appropriated $1,000 for the purchase and erection of a monument to the Union solders and s ailors who had served in the Civil War. Management of the project was delegated to Custer Post No. 5, Grand Army of the Republic, a Civil War Veteran's organization.

Today, Veteran's Day, 2004, we gather on this hallowed ground to rededicate Nevada's Tribute to Union Soldiers and Sailors following extensive restoration work. Now free of damage and the ravages of nature and mankind, the sentinel soldier returns to his solitary duty of standing watch over the historic Veterans section of Lone Mountain Cemetery. Once again, the monument shines as a fitting tribute that will endure for centuries to come.
