Confederate Soldier - The Public Library's Johnston County Room records state this photograph is Charles S. Powell in the uniform he wore as a member of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Born in 1843, he went to war at age 17 and served in the Infantry, fighting in a number of important battles in Virginia and Maryland. Later he served in the Confederate Artillery at Fort Fisher near Wilmington until the war's end. After the turn of the century Mr. Powell served as Sheriff of Johnston County for two terms. He died at his home in Smithfield in 1918.
