Hyde Co., NC Queries - 1998 HYDE COUNTY QUERIES - 1998 BALLANCE Charles & Susan Wilson Mar. 28, 1998 BALLANCE - Seeking parents and ancestors of Penelope (Penny/Fanny) BALLANCE, b. 1826-1834, in NC, probably in Currituck Co., Pasquotank Co., or Hyde Co.; married 6/1850 to James D. MOSELEY, Jr., in Norfolk, VA, b. 1816, son of Dr. James D. MOSELEY, Sr. and Elizabeth MARCHANT. Penelope BALLANCE died between 1880 and 1900 in Norfolk, VA BOSTON / LEWIS / PIERCE / SPARROW Charles Shepherd Mar. 28, 1998 I'm interested in any knowledge of the two "BOSTONS" listed on the 1790 Heads of Household, Newburn District, Hyde Co. Census pg.139. They are listed under the "ALL OTHER FREE PERSONS" column. Would like to know if anyone has any knowledge af a Joshua BOSTON and/or an Indian woman named DA'KE. She is said to have been an Independant Tuscarora woman who married a man named BOSTON. The descendants of DA'KE reside today in Jamesville "Free Union - Pineywoods Community" in Martin Co., NC, as the Machapunga - Tuscarora Indians. I'm also looking for info on Sally BOSTON who married Thomas LEWIS Mar. 17, 1791, and Harriet BOSTON who married Abijah LEWIS Dec. 14, 1819 in Tyrrell Co., and Sarah BUSTIN who married Samuel SPARROW in 1755 in Beaufort Co. Were they "persons of color"? I'm also requesting info on Israel and Thomas Pierce (Machapunga / Mattamuskeet Indian ??). They're listed in Tyrrell Co., Edenton District in 1790 "Free Colored", but it's believed they were from Hyde Co. Any info on any of the above would be greatly appreciated. BRINN John Brinn Jan. 19, 1998 I am primarily interested in any information on Jesse BRINN, who was born in 1800 in Hyde County to Richard BRINN and Mary (CAHOON ?) BRINN. CAHOON / NELSON Barbara Shiff July 4, 1998 I am hoping to find more information on the CAHOON line. My great great grandfather DAVID CAHOON was born in Swan Quarter, Hyde County, NC on 23 November 1810. He married ABBIE (ABIGAIL) NELSON who was also born in Swan Quarter NC on 11 March 1821. I have heard family members say that there was a problem between various Cahoons. My CAHOONs and NELSONs moved to Alabama. David and Abbie were married in Sumter County, AL 25 August 1839. DAVID CAHOON's father was JOSEPH ALEXANDER CAHOON. WILLIAM CAHOON who served in the Revolutionary War was also in my line. DAVID CAHOON's brother was WILLIAM A. J. CAHOON born 18 March 1918. CARAWAN / BALLANCE / CREDLE Bill Carawan Mar. 30, 1998 Searching for any information on CARAWAN and BALLANCE family surnames from the Hyde county area. I have traced the CARAWAN line back to JOHN CARROWAN of Hyde county, the BALLANCE line back to LABAN BALLANCE who married MARY H. CREDLE in Hyde County. Any information would be greatly appreciated. CARAWAN / CUTHRELL / SAWYER Yvonne Evans DeRuiz Mar. 23, 1998 I'm looking for info on Phillip CARAWAN, born about 1831 in Hyde County, died about 1878, married 1st wife Ann Mariah CARAWAN 9/13/1855, married 2nd wife Martha GILES 1/31/1860. COOPER / ROSE / SMITH Ruffin R. Cooper Feb. 17, 1998 Looking for any information on the COOPER family of Hyde and Martin Counties. Also seeking information about parents and family of Rebecca SMITH (b. 1861) and Sally ROSE, wives of Sylvanus COOPER (c.1853/5 -1920). I believe that Sally's father was Samuel ROSE (b. abt. 1832). The children of Sylvanus COOPER were; James (b. Feb. 1879), Sam (b. Mar. 1883), Annie (b. June 1889), Vera (b. Oct 1893), Lennie (Lena) (b.Feb. 1894) and Ruffin (b. 1898). I will share research. COOPER / ROSE / SMITH Ruffin R. Cooper Aug. 29, 1998 Researching my ggf Edward COOPER and our family that moved from Martin County to Hyde County between 1860 and 1870. Samuel ROSE was the father of Rebecca ROSE the second wife of my gf Sylvanus COOPER. The 1860 Census shows Samuel ROSE, age 28, living with his wife Amanda (SMITH), age 27, and two sons; William A., age 8 and Edward, age 5 in Swan Quarter, Hyde County. Also shown in the 1860 Census is Lucretia SMITH, age 56. It is reasonable to assume that Lucretia SMITH is the mother of Amanda. There are a number of Lucretia SMITH's listed in Census records in the 1800's The 1910 Census for my gf Sylvanus COOPER, now in Fairfield Twp. Hyde County, again shows Samuel ROSE, now age 78, living with Sylvanus and his wife Rebecca (ROSE), three children and a nephew Carroll. Samuel ROSE is listed in this Census as, "Father-in-Law". Any assistance in researching these family lines would be most appreciated. I would be happy to share information. COOPER / SAWYER Ruffin R. Cooper Aug. 29, 1998 The Hyde County Cemeteries book lists the parents of my ggf Sylvanus COOPER as "Freddie" COOPER and Carolyn SAWYER. I have good reason to believe that my ggf's given name is really Edward not "Freddie". I have found an 1850 Census record for Isaac SAWYER, age 54, living in Currituck District, Hyde County. There is no wife listed for Isaac. The following persons are listed as living with him; Caroline, age 19; Zachariah, age 19; Hezakiah, age 13; Hardy, age 12; Albert, age 2; and Welthy A. age 15. My ggf, Sylvanus COOPER was born in April 1855. This Caroline SAWYER (age 19 in 1850) would have been age 24 when my ggf was born. The close proximity (I guess) of where they lived and the ages make it possible that this Carolyn SAWYER is my ggm, and Isaac is her father. I would really appreciate any assistance in following up this possibility. I would be more than happy to share information. COWAN T. J.
