Roberts July 27, 1997 Looking for information on Laban Patrick ALLEN, born 1859 or 1860, supposedly in Hyde County. Parents are William ALLEN and Mary SATTSWATT. In 1887 he married Sarah HOPKINS in Tyrrell County, but he was previously married and had three children. Wife and children died. Would appreciate any information on possible spouse, or any leads on Laban Allen. My biggest obstacle is that Laban Allen doesn't appear in the Hyde County census until 1880, so I'm not sure if he was born in Hyde County. I also am unable to find any marriage record of his parents, and no record of them in Hyde County in 1860 or 1870 census. Their children were Sylvester, Jonah, Pemma, David, Lemuel, George, Celia J., and Samuel. I have been told she was a member of the Indian/Black Barber line in Hyde County. One source states his father as Jesse BRAGG and indeed a Jesse BRAGG is listed in the 1790-1830 Carteret Co. census (Ocracoke Dist.). Need proof that Jesse was Thomas BRAGG's father. Also need the name of Thomas' mother. Copied from an Old English Prayer Book is the following: John Burrus was born in England January 6, 1738; was ship wrecked on Hatteras, married Margaret HOWARD, Dec. 15, 1762. It also shows a sister Resie A. b.1859. Although it states Resie is married, and has 3 children, I have no last name for her or childrens names. A third brother Jonah COLLINS b.1870 (my grandfather) was shown with his wife Henrietta on the 1910 census in Dare County. They eventually move to Elizabeth City, NC. His mother is listed as Sarah JACKSON. She must have remarried after her husband died. I don't know his name. Thomas H. DAILEY was born in 1832 in NC. His wife was Nancy GASKINS daughter if Elijah Wise GASKINS and his wife Annie. She was born 12 Mar 1833 in Ocracoke and died 28 Dec 1915 in Ocracoke. She is buried in the Dailey Cemetery at Ocracoke (which is all overgrown or washed away). My grandfather was Captain Thomas Franklin Dailey born at Ocracoke in 1873. He had a sister, Margery Anna Dailey, who married John Wallace O'Neal (they are both buried at Ocracoke - as well as my great-grandparents). Unfortunately, my grandfather drowned in 1913 in Durhams Creek near Little Washington. I will appreciate any help or directions to start looking. Timothy Gradeless came to the area from Dorchester County in Maryland. I am trying to make connections between Timothy Gradeless, who appeared in the Hyde County in 1749 (North Carolina Record of Deeds A, 1736-1762), with John Gradeless who was in the 1790 Federal Census in Beaufort County (age 17), or with any Gradeless that prceeded him. Also, Amariah B. Gradeless appears on the 1850 Census in the housewhole of Redding Gradeless and is listed as a farmhand. I know that Amariah Gradeless was not the son of Redding. I would like to determine who Amariah's father was. Any one with documentation on these persons who can make connections would sure be appreciated.
