These are scans of pages from a bible printed in 1847. This bible belonged to Ellis Samuel Bowen and was graciously loaned to me by his daughter, Martha Louise Bowen Wilkins. Ellis Samuel Bowen is the son of John William Bowen and Savannah Permelia Shore. Both the Bowen and Shore names are prominent in Forsyth County, NC and some the genealogical information that was contained in this family bible, concerning children that died in infancy, would be hard to find elsewhere. This is the inside front cover. At the top, "Charty Shore" is written in pencil, and "Ellis Bomen" is written sideways in pencil. This is the first page, which says, "The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments, translated out of the original tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. New York: American Bible Society, instituted in the year MDCCCXVI. 1847." This is the last page of the Old Testament, and has written in ink at the bottom, "Charity Shore was born Dec. 9, 1824." Written in pencil at the bottom is, "Julius G. Bown born August 9, 1884." "The New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, translated out of the original Greek; and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. New York: American Bible Society, institued in the year MDCCCXVI. 1847" Near the top, written in pencil, is "Charly T Bown born July 22 1886." Written in ink on a blank page just before the book of Matthew. The page is divided into columns, "Births" and "Deaths." Under "Births" is written, "Robert Erastus and Henry Calvin twin sons of Thomas and Charity Shore were born May 24 1860. Jacob Sydney son of the same was born Oct 5 1851. Susan Elizabeth daughter of same was born Dec 10, 1854. Julius Martin Shore was born March 30, 1856. Permelia Savanna and Suffia Adealia twin daughters were born Jan 4 1859." Under "Deaths" is written, "Robert Erastus died June 28, 1860. Ellis Samuel Boen born January 28 1883 Samuel Elis Boen born Jan 28 1883. Suffia Adealia died April 28 1859." The first page of the book of Matthew. Written in pencil at the top is, "It snowed April the 4 in 99." Inside back cover, after Revelation. Written in bluish ink is, "Savanna Shore March the 6 1875 Bethania Forsythe." Written in pencil just above that is, "Julius." |
