He grew up on the family farm at Cuba, Missouri. A gifted athlete, he
helped Cuba High School earn back-to-back state basketball championships
as a star forward. He also was a fine baseball player, having made the
St. Louis Cardinals squad briefly before the organization learned he was
too young for league eligibility. He did enjoy racing his Austin Healy in
local Sports Car Club of America events.

Bowl, both being football fanatics. In 1976 Griff and Elaine relocated to
Colorado, having purchased 40 acres near Virginia Dale. There they lived for
two years without electricity and no running water. Little wonder, then,
that their son Jesse would be born in 1979. After moving around due to work,
the family settled in Windsor, Colorado.
