MO Local Obituaries for the Week of March 11, 2009 Walter Louis Ashenfelter Walter Louis Ashenfelter of Ola, Arkansas, formerly of Cuba, Missouri, was born August 14, 1937 in Brailey, Ohio to Hanson and Truth Booth Ashenfelter and passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Chambers Memorial Hospital in Danville, Arkansas at the age of 71. He was a Church of Christ minister and a retired union electrician, a member of IBEU local union 232, West Palm Beach, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Russell and Robert Ashenfelter; sisters, Virginia Buckenmyer, Florence Franldin; and son, Russell Emeray Ashenfelter. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Geraldine Engle Ashenfelter; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Lewis and Pam Ashenfelter of Stuart, Florida; daughters and sons-in-law, Truth Edith and Randy Truex of Dayton, Ohio, Tamara Feryn and Jerry Miller of Niles, Michigan and Sandra Annette and Jimmy Stutts of Jacksonville, Florida; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Pallbearers included Harlon Porter, Paul Ashenfelter, Jerry Miller, Randy Truex, Paul Ashenfelter Jr. and Daniel Ashenfelter. Irene Elizabeth Eaton Irene Elizabeth Eaton (nee Viehman) of Steelville, Missouri was born March 3, 1919 in Steelville, Missouri to Clarence and Carnie (Edwards) Viehman and passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Gibbs Care Center in Steelville, Missouri at the age of 90 years. For many years, Irene worked as a doctor’s assistant for some of the local doctors in Crawford County. She was a member of the Steelville Presbyterian Church for over 70 years. She was a long time member of the Steelville Extension Club. In her spare time, she was an avid reader. She is survived by her children, Joyce (Milt) Messick of Chicago, Illinois and David (Christine) Eaton of Liberty, Missouri; four brothers, Bud (Ava) Viehman of Steelville, Missouri, Richard (Marlyn) Viehman and Leslie (Dot) Viehman, all of Florissant, Missouri, and Ralph (Ardell) Viehman of Garland, Texas; one sister, Maxine Mullen of St. Louis, Missouri; three grandchildren, Michael Eaton of New York, New York, Steven (Debbie) Messick of Harvard, Illinois and Julie (Dave) Camel of Barrington, Illinois; four great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Shirley Ann Hoyer Shirley Ann Hoyer of Cuba, Missouri was born on Tuesday, May 8, 1934 in University City, Missouri to Gordon L. Hoyer and Viola Alice Bush Hoyer. She passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Lifecare Center in Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 74 years, 9 months, and 27 days. Shirley was employed for 35 years at Staats Rexall Drug Store and later worked as a clerk for Brummet’s grocery, also in Cuba, Missouri. She was a member of the Cuba United Methodist Church. Her hobbies were bowling and softball. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Gordon L. “Sonny” Hoyer. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Sally Hoyer and friend Bob Hiam of St. James, Missouri; nieces, Cynthia and husband Carmel Mouser of St. James, Missouri and Tamara Linderman of Steelville, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Johnson of Sullivan, Missouri was born on October 26, 1946 at Washington, Missouri to John David and Dorothy (Wilson) Johnson and passed away at his home on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the age of 62 years. He was raised in the Stanton, Missouri area and worked in various jobs, which included the Post Office at St. Clair, Missouri and the assessor’s office in Union. On June 6, 1970 he was united in marriage to Mary Narup at Union, Missouri. He later became employed at the former Zero Manufacturing Company in Washington as a time study analyst until a disability caused his early retirement. David honorably served his country during the Vietnam War with the U. S. Marine Corps. He attained the rank of Lance Corporal and was decorated with a Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He found pleasure in fishing and hunting, gardening and recently became involved in the family genealogy. He was a member of the American Legion of Union, Missouri and the Disabled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by his father and his parents-in-law, Elmer and Mabel Narup. He is survived by his wife of the family home; one son David I. Johnson and wife Amy of Sullivan, Missouri; one daughter, Diane Terry and husband Tony of Bourbon, Missouri; his mother, Dorothy Hawkins of St. Clair, Missouri; one brother, Robert Johnson and wife Brenda of Sullivan, Missouri; two sisters, Peggy Schmidt and husband Doug of Sullivan, Missouri and Debra Hawkins and husband Bill of Beaufort, Missouri; five grandchildren, Tony Terry, Jr., Austin Terry, Derek Johnson, Abby Terry and Grace Johnson; other relatives and friends. Helen Estelle Jonas Helen Estelle Jonas of Steelville, Missouri was born October 13, 1912 in Cherryville, Missouri to Ed and Mabel (Day) Ives and passed away on Friday, February 27, 2009 at the Gibbs Care Center in Steelville, Missouri at the age of 96 years. On June 28, 1936, she was united in marriage in Steelville, Missouri to Rudy Fredrick “Fritz” Jonas who preceded her in death on March 26, 1994. As a young girl, Helen always loved horses and even when she was older enjoyed driving along the farmland to watch for horses. In the late 1940’s she and “Fritz” purchased a farm where they raised Black Angus cattle for several years and they enjoyed farm life. She and her husband “Fritz” will be remembered as owners of the Jonas Drug Store for many years. They were always very giving to the community and individuals when someone asked for help. In the year 2000, Helen presented the city of Steelville the keys to her home on Main Street, which became the Jonas Museum. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Steelville since 1931. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Claude Ives and Clarence Ives; two sisters, Erma Richter and Glyde Coleman. She is survived by her sister, Georgia Crawford of Portland, Oregon and several nieces and nephews. Clarence Turnbough Clarence Turnbough of Cuba, Missouri, formerly of Steelville, Missouri was born July 27, 1918 to Wayne and Luettie (Scott) Turnbough in Crawford County, Missouri and passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Gibbs Care Center in Steelville, Missouri at the age of 90 years. In July of 1941, he and Opal Gray were married in Salem, Missouri. She preceded him in death on November 30, 1995. Clarence served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Carpenters Union #1739 in St. Louis working many commercial building projects and retiring in 1981. In years past, he enjoyed trout fishing, hunting and trapping. He and his wife, Opal, always enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Texas and Arizona. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cuba, Missouri, a past member of the Big Spring IOOF Lodge of St. James and the St. James Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; infant son and daughter; one brother, Glenn (Juanita) Turnbough; one sister, Pauline (Walter) Walden; three brothers-in-law, Russell (Virginia) Gray, Earl Gray and Elmer (Edna) Gray; two sisters-in-law, Helen (Lloyd) Lea and Dorothy Callahan. He is survived by one brother, Gilbert (Louise) Turnbough of Steelville, Missouri; two sisters, Frances Guess and Vernice (Hack) Lea, all of Steelville, Missouri; two brothers-in-law, Lawrence (Maxine) Gray of Baldwin, Missouri and Cordell Callahan of St. James, Missouri; friend, Betty Tiner of Cuba, Missouri; other relatives and friends. West Hilda Imogene West of Leasburg was born Monday, February 2, 1914 at Bourbon, Missouri to the union of Charles Edward and Lula (nee Eldredge) Steuernagel and passed away Monday, March 2, 2009 at Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 95 years and one month. Hilda was united in marriage to Bernard L. West on November 27, 1947 at Steelville, Missouri and to this union four children were born. They were happily married for 55 years. Hilda worked as a schoolteacher at Fairview, Sunnyside and Mound Schools in her younger years. She worked at the Small Arms Plant in St. Louis during the war. After raising her children she went back to work as a substitute schoolteacher and librarian for the Bourbon School District and retired in 1979 after many years of dedicated service. After retirement she worked side by side with her husband Bernard farming and raising cattle. Hilda was the secretary for Lea Cemetery for many years. In her spare time she enjoyed quilting, gardening, canning, baking, playing cards and being outside. But what she truly enjoyed most was spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Brent West; one son-in-law, Ernest Sokolowski; one sister, Doris Steuernagel; other relatives and friends. She is survived by her son, Barry and wife Kathy West of Leasburg, Missouri; two daughters, Linda and husband Lester Benne of Chamois, Missouri and Carol Smith of Leasburg, Missouri; one brother, Joe Steuernagel of Bourbon, Missouri; six grandchildren, Sheri and husband Steve Nenninger, Mary Sokolowski, Michael Sokolowski, Crystal and husband Carl Monda, Grant West and Brent and wife Trinity Smith; seven great grandchildren, Trevor, Nicholas and Matthew Nenninger, Austin and Evan Monda, Payton and Haiden Smith; other relatives and friends.
