Maine State Archives Card Index
Before 1892
Many towns & cities have lost their early vital records
due to fire
or the town clerks did not keep good records in the first place.
On 15 Apr 1927, the Maine Legislature passed Maine Law Chapter
213. The Maine State registrar of the vital statistics was to
ascertain from what towns complete returns were lacking, and send
blanks to the town clerks for completion. Under Maine law Chapter
213 sec 3, the law stated that inscriptions on gravestone could
be copied and recorded. All towns in Maine were asked to copy all
their pre 1892 records on cards for use at the Maine State
Archives. We are told that only about 80 towns (about 20%)
actually took part in this project. Below are listed 81 towns
which took part in the project. Words of warning must be given to
the researcher. DO NOT be surprised if you can not find the
original records. Remember that in addition to the town vital
records, the town clerks were told that they could send in
cemetery records, church records, etc and some of the data sent
in is full of errors.
After several decades this vital record resource is going high
tech. Volunteers at the Maine State Archives is transferring the
information on the cards to the Maine State Archive's PC. If you
would like to join the Maine State Archives in this great
project, the Maine
State Archives would like to talk to you. As of October 23,
1998, The Archives have entered grooms 13,285 records. Perhaps
some of the readers of Kennebec County could ask the staff of the
Maine State Archives if they could join in this project? Maine
marriage records before 1865 for the most part did not report the
names of the parents of the groom & bride.
