St. Nicholas Church Burials

Patuxent River Naval Air Station
St. Mary's County, MD

St. Nicholas Church is located at NAS Patuxent River. The present church building, built in 1915, is the current base chapel and replaces the church built in 1795.

When the Navy took over the land, a survey showing grave locations and tombstone data was recorded. The stones were then laid flat over the graves and covered with sod.

Naval aviators at that time held a taboo about flying over cemeteries. Additionally, officials felt that with trying to entice people to work here, seeing a cemetery as one of the first land marks to be seen upon entering the base, was less than encouraging.

Since 1943, there has been thought that what was surveyed was all there was. The submittter has since discovered that in addition to the 320 marked graves, there indeed many more. Additionally, he discovered records of burials at the St. Michaels Parish in Ridge and have incorporated them into the database.

Legend has it that a group of Trappist Monks attempted to establish a mission in the area. Almost all quickly fell ill and died and are supposedly buried somewhere on the site. The submitter also believes that the family of Nicholas Sewell are buried here as well however, there was no evidence of their graves in 1943.
