Michael Cemetery at Firm Rock Plantation

The Michael Cemetery is about 5 miles above Westernport on Big Savage Mountain in Garrett County, MD. The precise coordinates are 39.51875 degrees N, 79.07803 degrees W. The driveway, leading to Magruder Farm off Westernport Road, is blocked by a locked gate. The cemetery is at the top of a field above the old farmhouse. There are no signs to the driveway or to the cemetery. Access is best arranged by contacting the Allegany County Genealogical Society, which maintains the cemetery.

The Michael Cemetery at Firm Rock Plantation is located on military lots assigned to family patriarch Philip Michael under Deakin’s Survey. Philip, the Michael family’s immigrant ancestor, came to then-Allegany County after serving in the Revolutionary War as a resident of Loudoun County, VA. The earliest burial is that of Philip’s grandson, Joseph Michael (1809-1824). According to family history, two weeks prior to his death in a nearby coal mine, Joseph told his father (John, Sr.) that the site was a good place for a cemetery.
