Pine Grove Cemetery is located in South Vernon Parish near the town of Cravens.
This is a small country cemetery that is unique in that it contains several houses that
were built over burials in the late 1800's and early 1900's. This custom was prevalent
years ago in the South, however, there are only a few remaining today. During
modernization of most of the cemeteries, the little houses were removed because
of the upkeep required. Pine Grove is unique in that there are so many that remain
today.

Each site has a tin roof covering the immediate burial site, normally one grave to a site.
The roof has wooden eaves at the front and back, as well as an inside wooden ceiling.
The sites are enclosed in small wooden picket fences, with each slat hand made with
intricate designs.

From the gate at Pine Grove, the view is somewhat startling at first. There are all these
little houses sitting neatly side by side, as if the cemetery is really a small village. The
burials in the little houses were for the Pierson and Talbert families. [Photo taken in 1994]
