The photograph was taken on Mr. Richard Tubb Moore's farm in the
late 1800s, exact year
unknown - Richard Tubb Moore was born in Perry Co, AL 14 Feb 1831,
came to Union Parish,
LA in 1850, and died 22 Oct 1913.)
Left to right:
"Mrs. Everett, Mrs. Miller, Bella Moore, Mrs. Wainright, Mrs. Fuller,
Mrs. Grafton, Mrs. McFerrin,
Mrs. Newton & babie, Mrs McDonald & babie, Clara Moore, Mrs.
Thaxton, Mrs. Odom,
Mrs. Robison, Mrs. Raley & babie, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Barkly, Mrs.
Cole, Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Ruths
& babie, Mrs Reeves, Mrs. E. B. Robison, Mr. R. T. Moore, two darkis."
These names were written on the back in ink. I'm sorry the two
African-American farm workers are
not identified by name. The term "darkies" is certainly not appropriate
for our day and age, however
that is exactly what is written, and I didn't feel it was appropriate
to change it. There are 29 people in
the photograph, 3 men, 4 babies whose first names aren't given, and
22 women, yet I count only 21
names for the women. To some degree one can identify the women
with babies and those just to the
right or left
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Since this was first submitted, I have looked at the information on
the photo as I looked at the picture
on the computer screen. If read from right to left, the way it
is written on the back of the photo, all the
names match up to the women with babies, and only the last lady on
the left is not named. I would
guess she is either the sender or the recipient of the photo.
She isn't either my grandmother, Rosa
Copeland Mabry, or my great-grandmother Susan Annie Moore Copeland,
so she may be one of the
Moores and the one who sent it to - probably - my great-grandmother
after she left Union Parish in
1904-05.
FROM RIGHT TO LEFT (the reverse of the way we usually name people in
pictures)
the names are:
Mr. R. T. Moore, two darkis
Mrs. E. B. Robinson
Mrs. Reeves & babie
Mrs. Ruths (does anyone
have a better suggestion for this name?)
Mrs. Brooks
Mrs. Cole
Mrs. Barckly
Mrs. Moore (R. T. Moore's
wife ?)
Mrs. Raley & babie
Mrs. Robison
Mrs. Odom
Mrs. Thaxton
Miss Clara Moore
Mrs. McDonald & babie
Mrs. Newton & babie
Mrs. McFerin
Mrs. Grafton
Mrs. Fuller
Mrs. Wainryht
Miss Bella Moore
Mrs. Miller
Mrs. Everett
unamed lady
