The specific location of the first railroad line through Union Parish caused much political discussion in the mid-1890s, a welcome diversion from the severe drought that plagued the region at this same time. For a while, it appeared as if the line would pass directly through Farmerville. The town's hopes were dashed the next year, when the rail line was laid from Junction City southward towards Ruston, by-passing Farmerville for the time being. Rail service did not reach the parish seat until 1904, when Farmerville held a large celebration barbeque, with Louisiana's Governor and various other dignitaries in attendance. These 1901 maps of the Arkansas Southern Railroad, and the Arkansas Southern Railway show the specific rail stops in Union Parish a few years before the rail line was completed to Farmerville.
This railroad map of Union Parish shows the early railroad lines in relation to the post offices and river landings that existed between 1898 and 1907. We are indebted to David Dawkins for his efforts in researching, preparing, and submitting this Union Parish Railroad Map to the Union Parish Archives.
This map was submitted to the Union Parish Louisiana USGenWeb Archives by David Dawkins in July 2006.
