William Hunt was born on 11 March 1806 in Laurens District South Carolina, the son of Isaiah Hunt (4 Feb 1777 – May 1826) and Jane (25 Aug 1780 – ?). He married Teresa Holcombe (1 Apr 1807 – 6 Apr 1871) on 5 June 1825 in Jefferson County Alabama. Teresa was a daughter of Rev. Hosea Holcombe and his wife, Cassandra Jackson. William and Teresa had only one known child, Alva Jackson Hunt (2 Apr 1826 – 5 Sept 1862), who perished from disease while serving in the Confederate army. The extended Holcombe family moved to Lafayette County Mississippi in 1841, and in 1854, William moved his family to Spearsville, in northwestern Union Parish Louisiana.
On the first Sunday in May 1855, William Hunt, his wife Teresa, son Alva and daughter-in-law Laura Ann Rockett Hunt all joined the Spearsville Baptist Church by letter. William Hunt served Spearsville Baptist Church as minister on numerous occasions until his retirement at the age of 87 years. He wrote this in his autobiography:
In 1893 I had to retire from the ministry having partially lost my voice and eyesight, and being too feeble to undergo the labors, but still my mind runs out for the glory of God and the salvation of souls. I am now in my 92nd year; have been a member of the church about 73 years; have been in the ministry 40 years, but I never weary in working for the Lord. My hope in God is strong. I am just waiting for Him to call me home, where the wicked cease from troubling, and the weary are at rest. I have a great many relatives and friends that have gone to that better land which makes Heaven more desirable. A great many friends I expect to leave behind, who, I hope will follow after me.
William and Teresa are buried in the Spearsville Cemetery, along with their son and many grandchildren.
