The tables below contain a full-name index to, complete transcriptions of, and images of each original page of the 1870 Union Parish Louisiana Federal Census (Population Schedule). This is the first census enumeration of Union Parish that lists all people residing in the parish, both black and white. Previous censuses only recorded the white residents by name. Also given here is a transcription of the Mortality Schedule for Union Parish that lists all deaths reported to the enumerator as occurring between 1 June 1869 and 31 May 1870.

1870 Post Offices and Ward Boundaries
During the postwar turmoil of 1866 – 1872, the United States Government repeatedly closed and then reopened many old Union Parish post offices. Spearsville (Ward 3) closed on 28 June 1866, whereas Shiloh (Ward 4) closed on 21 December 1869. Thus, when the 1870 census enumerator surveyed the parish, those families enumerated in Wards 3 and 4 had no nearby post office. Both post offices reopened soon after 1870. For a detailed explanation of the ward boundaries, see our Ward Designations Page

1850 – 1880 Federal Census Schedules
The United States Federal Censuses of 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 were all divided into various parts, called schedules. The regular "census" is technically known as the Population Schedule. Another part was the Mortality Schedule, which gives information on all people who died in the year preceeding the census day, which in those years was June 1, 18x0 (where x=5,6,7,8). Here is a verbatim transcription of all residents of Union Parish whose deaths were reported to the 1870 census enumerator:
