The tables below contain a full-name index to, complete transcriptions of, and images of each original page of the 1850 Union Parish Louisiana Federal Census (Population Schedule). Note that the 1850 Population Schedule only recorded the names of whites and free blacks. No free blacks were listed in Union Parish in 1850, so the only names recorded here are the white Union Parish residents. Slaves were recorded by age on the Slave Schedule portion of the 1850 census. Also included below is an alphabetized list of the Union Parish residents listed on the 1850 Union Parish Mortality Schedule, a list of the Union Parish deaths as reported to the census enumerator as occurring between 1 June 1849 and 30 May 1850.
- Organization of the 1850 Union Parish Census
- Some years after the clerk transferred the census information into the census book, the original book was rebound with the pages out of order. At various times after this, the pages on the book were numbered the pages. The result is that every page of this census contains several numbers, both stamped and handwritten. The numbers tend to perpetuate the out-of-order presentation of this census enumeration. When the rebound census book was microfilmed, the jumbled order was maintained. The complete 1850 Union Parish Census includes sheet numbers 349A – 408B and pages 1 – 118.
- Locating a Specific Person on the 1850 Union Parish Census
- The easiest method to locate any given individual is through the sheet numbers, the page numbers stamped on the originals. First locate the name in the index, and then find the corresponding sheet number on the transcribed censuses or the images given in the tables below.
- Specific Regions on the 1850 Union Parish Census
- Unfortunately, the 1850 enumerator recorded neither the wards that subdivided the parish nor the nearby post offices, so we cannot pinpoint the specific regions in which any individual family lived on this census. It is clear that he began his enumeration in the Town of Farmerville with sheet #349A, and all residents through sheet #352B or so lived there.

- 1850 – 1880 Federal Census Schedules
- The United States Federal Censuses of 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 were all divided into various parts, called schedules. The regular "census" is technically known as the Population Schedule. Another part was the Mortality Schedule, which gives information on all people who died in the year preceeding the census day, which in those years was June 1, 18x0 (where x=5,6,7,8). To view an alphabetized listing of all (white) residents of Union Parish whose deaths were reported to the 1850 census enumerator, click on the link below. We hope to have a verbatim listing of all deaths (white and slave) in the near future.
