Sarah Ann Elizabeth Scarborough (Betsy) was born near Snow Hill, in Wilcox County Alabama, the daughter of Noah Lewis Scarborough and Samantha Fowler. Betsy moved to what is now Union Parish Louisiana in 1848 with her parents. She married John Thomas Ward in 1854 and they farmed in the Bayou d'Loutre region of east/central Union Parish in the 1850s and 1860s. They lived in Farmerville in the 1870s. After her husband died in 1883, Betsy lived as a widow on her plantation about seven miles east of Farmerville. Also see her biography.
