John Thomas Ward was born in Lowndes County Alabama, the son of David Ward and his wife Cynthia Seale. He moved to what is now Union Parish Louisiana in February 1837 with his parents. He married in the 1850s to Sarah Ann Elizabeth Scarborough and farmed in the Ward's Chapel Community of eastern Union Parish. In the 1860s, he moved to Farmerville and worked at various jobs, including deputy sheriff. He was elected constable in the 1870s. Also see Ward's biography.
