Vernon Parish was created on 1871 , from Natchitoches, Rapides and Sabine Parishes and the parish was named in honor of Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, the first U.S. President . The Parish seat is Leesville .

It is borderd by Sabine Parish (northwest), Natchitoches Parish (north), Rapides Parish (east), Allen Parish (southeast), Beauregard Parish (south), Newton County, TX (west) . Cites, Towns and Communities include Anacoco, Fort Polk North, Fort Polk South, Hornbeck, Leesville, New Llano, Rosepine, Simpson . Unincorporated areas of interest in the parish include Alco, Almadane, Burr Factory, Caney, Comrade, Coopers, Cora, Cravens, Dido, Fal, Fort Polk, Fullerton, Hicks, Hood, Hutton, Knight, Kurthwood, Lacamp, Leander, Mayo, Pickering, Pinewood, Pitkin, Slagle, Surgrue and Temple.
